I'm all for respecting and enjoying you heritage and culture, and I do, but it's sooo depressing seeing how many people in chat acted like it's some truly important aspect of your life. The tribalism mentality is ridiculous.
I think it's just more important in some cultures than others, I can see both sides but it's really up to an individual to care about it, especially this day and age

@@freedominart11 that's why I said there is an interesting angle to this as I think this mindset really only applies to people who are "white", but I haven't really put any thought into it I'd have to examine the ideas a little closer. If you asked most white people in the US what ethnicity they are I'd go out on a limb and guess they'd probably mostly say "white" but if you asked a Chinese American what their ethnicity is they'd probably say "Chinese" and not Asian.
The question I thought was interesting and worth maybe discussing is "what is the white American and to a certain extent the white Canadian identity stripped of ethnicity"
because it seems like me and NL would probably both agree that our identity as white people is devoid of ethnicity. I'm not German or Irish, I'm just American, and the US doesn't really have a culture or ethnicity tied to it aside from "white"

@@freedominart11 It would be nice to learn about any culture. I don't see any reason to focus on German culture specifically versus say Indian or Japanese culture. No one in my family has ever lived there. I have nothing in common with Germans, we don't even speak the same language.
We share an ethnic background? Who cares. I share an ethnic background with literally everyone. We are all the same species, and any ethnic diversion happened super recently in anthropological terms. Past a couple generations familial ties stop mattering. Go back far enough and we're all related somehow.
Putting a big emphasis on connecting with people who are most similar to you ethnically is pointless and racist. There's no reason to associate with people just because if you go back a thousand years you have a common ancestor.

Well yeah it doesn't matter but like you said it's cool to learn about. For people with minority backgrounds it becomes very important to learn about family history and ethnic heritage. It's mostly just funny that a man with the most French last name doesn't think he's French lmao

@@shansen6969 learning about your ethnic origins or culture is a great way to connect to your family as well as fight against white supremacy. Learning about what makes yourself and other people unique bridges the gap between groups or individuals that might harbor undue animosity.

@@freedominart11 Learning about your ethnic origins does not do any of the things you mentioned lol. Nobody else you interact with will ever know your ethnic origins. Anybody negatively judging you for your ethnic origins will do so based on appearance. The only way anyone else would ever know about your results is if you're the guy who says "I'm 2% native american" at parties. And even then nobody cares.
It doesn't connect you to your family. Learning about it won't suddenly cause you to meet new people or rekindle your relationship with your parents. It might give you a vague sense of belonging, but that's just in your head. Your interpersonal relationships will be unaffected.
It does nothing to fight white supremacy, or build bridges. It's not magically useful for minorities either. It's an interesting factoid. It has no relevance to who you are as a person, how you act, what you believe, your personality, etc. You can't tell anything about a person based on their ethnic composition. There is so much variance within ethnic groups that it's not a good predictor of anything. That's why racism is so stupid; because ethnic background doesn't matter.
