One of the best “divorce songs” ever written by the happily married Bobby Goldsboro. Vikki Carr did an outstanding version of this masterpiece.

Back in 1969, this wasn’t considered country & western music. It was pop. Unlike today where C&W is in very large part rock and role of the 60’s and 70’s. Mac Davis isn’t in the hall either.

One of the most sadly romantic songs has ever been written (my viewpoint).
    With Pen In Hand.
The original is always the best.
    Simply beautiful.

My parents separated in 1980, my father to moved to Houston from South Dakota when I was eight years old. He left his records home and Bobby Goldsbor's Greatest Hits was one of them. Those records were about the only connection I could find with my father and I remember playing this song, along with many other sad songs over and over. I knew that I was Johnny. I have listened to other versions of this song but they just don't stir me the same way this one does. It's nice seeing it performed.

On this day in 1969 {April 23rd} Vicki Carr performed "With Pen In Hand" on the CBS-TV program 'The Glen Campbell Goodtime Hour'...
One month later on May 3rd it entered Billboard's Hot Top 100 chart; eventually it peaked at #35 and spent 13 weeks on the Top 100...
It reached #6 on Billboard's Adult Contemporary Tracks chart...
Two other versions have charted; Billy Vera {#43 in 1968} and Bobby Goldsboro {#94 in 1972, and he composed the song}...
    May God bless Mr. Campbell...

All 'young men' who have children should listen to this song before taking their foolish pride in their hands and not keeping his young protege's secure and happy ! Sure it takes work & focus, losing some battles, refusing to hold grudges and most importantly never putting an eye on another woman.

This is so devastating to even think what you must've gone through.
It's unbelievable that people like you had to carry on with everyday life when this shocking event took place, because you your little son to look after.
I'd just break into zillion tiny pieces.
Maybe your son was your saviour as you had no other option, but you were then an incredibly strong man, a hero really.
I'm so sorry for you and your son, that you had to have your life turned upside down.
Shame your wife didn't appreciate you and her beautiful family.
People often take their happy marriage for granted and they think that another person might offer them something more.
When you have a child, your life doesn't belong to you, it belongs to that child and your family members. You have to be a responsible parent.
Had she known that, she'd be still here.
I hope, you have managed to find peace after this tragedy. ❤️

Last Friday, a friend brought me a ton of 10, 12 and 16 inch 78 rpms. Most of them were in dirty, moldy, bug invested book albums - get the picture? In there, however, were six copies of Linda Plowman's version of this Goldsboro classic,, made in 1970 when she was just 13. Go figure. Say, did you ever hear Jerry Wells version of "See the Funny Little Clown?" It came out in 1964 too. How do I know? Because the Squires (on the Gee Label) recorded it with yours truly singing lead on the Twin Hits label. Hey, don't arrest me! I got $10 for singing lead while the other fellas got $5 each, and we had to buy the record for 20 cents.
