  • A tour de force by a virtuoso at the height of her powers. Very few vocalists reach this level of performance. I cherish it as another may not come along soon. Lyrics are below description.
"Johnny" was a rare Brenda Lee hit recorded outside of Nashville and her record company. It was recorded at Columbia Recording Studio, 30th St., New York City on October 16, 1968. The session players: Jay Berliner [gt], Louis Mauro [bass], Buddy Saltzman [drums], Arthur Brennan [piano], Dave Carey [vibes]. The producer was Mike Berniker. Arranged and conducted by Marty Manning
The single was released December 23, 1968.
Songwriters: Dallas Frazier; Arthur Leo "Doodle" Owens (1930-1999)
So he told you that you're the dream that he's been searching for
And he told you that he's never met anyone like you before
And I can hear him telling you, your lips taste just like sherry wine
But did he tell you that he's known as Johnny One Time
Did he tell you that your heart will soon become
Another trinket on his bracelet of broken hearts?
Did he tell you that the morning sun will find you
Patching up your shattered pride and searching for the missing parts?
Did he tell you that the special love you're saving
Will disappear in flames of shame like mine?
Did he tell you that he's known as Johnny One Time
So he told you that he'd never lead your heart astray
And he told you that he'd love you forever and a day
And I can hear him telling you that he's the shy and bashful kind
But did he tell you that he's known as Johnny One Time
Did he tell you that your heart will soon become
Another trinket on his bracelet of broken hearts?
And did he tell you that the morning sun will find you
Patching up your shattered pride and searching for the missing parts?
And did he tell you that the special love you're saving
Will disappear in flames of shame like mine?
Did he tell you that he's known as Johnny one time?
Johnny one time... Johnny, Johnny, Johnny
    Johnny, Johnny One Time
    I said Johnny, Johnny, Johnny
    Johnny, Johnny One Time

I saw Brenda at the Empire Room at the Palmer House in Chicago in 1973 .After the show I handed her assistant a sketch I did of her. He came back out and told me Brenda wanted to meet me backstage in her dressing room. We talked and in kissed her on the cheek before I left ( I’d never kiss a married woman on the lips ). 2 years later , at the opening of Old Chicago amusement park, they had a show room where she was appearing. I talked to her as she arrived . She remembered me from before and asked if I was seeing the show ? I said yes. As I sat in the front row with my brother she started to sing “ You are The Sunshine on my life “ and when the lyric “ you must have known that I was coming , “ she pointed to me in the front row. Tho born in 1952, I never appreciated her music til I bought the 1970 lp “ Memphis Portrait “, my favorite lp period ! Since then I’ve purchased every lp she ever recorded . Been a fan ever since , the greatest female artist ever , second only to Elvis overall !

Thank you for the story. Brenda was the superstar who never acted like one. Somehow she remained a normal person throughout her life. She was unaffected by being famous. I saw her in 2016 on one of her last tours and she still stayed until everyone got an autograph and picture with her if they wanted one. Probably took her a couple of hours to do so.

Considering I am only 51 now people think I am crazy oh well. She is truly a classy lady in my book. And her Christmas album isn't christmas with out her. I still have the 45 of Johnny one time I guess my mom or dad bought it and I have all them. I wish I had my dads album collection he has over 5,000 albums he's collected over the years.

You are not crazy.. I'm 64 and didn't really enjoy the 'country' music from the late fifties and early sixties, but now can easily see how wonderful some of these people were, especially Brenda Lee, Jim Reeves, Marty Robbins, Roy Orbison and other greats. The last 10 years have changed my mind. And I think many more will feel this way given the dearth of talent today. God bless them all.

    • @MostlyBrenda
      @MostlyBrenda  Před 4 lety +3

"Effortless" - She is a giant among singers, so it is "easy/effortless" for her to be better than other performers, but sometimes, like here, she reached an intensity that even the best rarely attained. Brenda viewed this performance about 30 yrs later and even she was surprised. She said in her book that she couldn't recall what caused it (the elevated level of emotion, I am guessing). Also see the "Proud Mary" video on the channel from the same show. Tore it up on that one too.

The ending is amazing. The original is a woman's solemn lament over being conned by a one-timer, but here she flips the song on it's head and pines for the man to comeback! 07 Oct 1999 , AP in Nashville, TN: The death of lyricist A.L. "Doodle" Owens is announced. He wrote dozens of country music hits for stars like Charley Pride, George Jones and Mo Bandy, died Monday. He was 68, Mr. Owens suffered a massive heart attack Sept. 16 and was hospitalized at Select Specialty Hospital Nashville, He had survived a series of heart and kidney ailments in the early 1990s, Mr. Owens' hits include "Wine Colored Roses ' for Jones, "Johnny One Time" for Brenda Lee and "Hank and Lefty Raised My Country Soul" for Stoney Edwards. "Doodle could paint pictures with his songwriting" said Dallas Frazier, a songwriter, Mr. Owens got the nickname "Doodle" as a child because he crawled backward. "There's a bug called the doodle bug that does everything backward," said Mary Ann Owens, his widow. "So his uncle named him Doodle Bug. He's been Doodle ever since."

I want to stay with Brenda Lee we were from Conyers and Lithonia Georgia I didn't particularly care for her she was not my kind of people but she had a fantastic voice she really did I did run around with her for first cousins but her I didn't like at all we just didn't connect but she's was just a little girl but I know that she and I didn't connect in any way and that's okay but I will not say that she was not fantastic when it comes to singing Because she was one of the best

Thanks for the comment. I understand about "school", not "stay". Were the cousins Yarbroughs or Tarpleys? I have a group family picture and not sure if it is her mother's or father's side.

No, Willie didn't write it. Full information about the song is in the description.

She's only 25 in this video. Why is she dressed like an old lady?

Tom Forsythe Unfortunately every 1970’s hairstyle and clothing style absolutely sucked green ditch water! No matter what we wore, hair or clothes, we always looked like crap. The whole decade was basically crap - economy, style, you name it. I think here poor Brenda was just a victim of the times!

You might want to click on the "I Think I Love You Again" link at the end of the video which was taped about the same time as this one. Brenda never dressed "sexy" and her manager didn't market her that way either. Additionally, she is so small that the whole wardrobe had to go to a seamstress first.
