She’s so talented. Shame she didn’t get more recognition.
It’s was more superstition that killed her career people thought that it was something about her that cause a friend of hers a fellow actor that died in a car accident and the rumor of her a curse surrounding her that ended her short career.

Vamipra cocktail. You like it, it hates you .
Best line ever
Everyone knows electricity is for chairs
I love her voice and wit. She was a-head of her time.
I was thinking the exact same thing
Me too! I am obsessed with her!
That music when she's first walking down the hallway is the same music Stanley Kubrick used in the horror movie The Shining. Incredible.
It’s Béla Bartók - Music for Strings, Percussion, and Celesta
yeah it is .
Incredible footage, Thank you! I was disappointed to learn that "The Vampira Show" was lost to the sands of time. I learned from "Vampira- The Movie" (2006) that her primary sponsor was one "Fletcher Jones Chevy." A large Car Dealership in Los Angeles that branched out to Las Vegas some 45 years ago. My Dad worked for "Fletcher Jones" for nearly 20 years. What a small world!
GrowinupinSincity81 I remember Vampira and Fletcher Jones...some of the things she said to him on the live interlude made him blush, I could see him blush, and this was b&w TV. Channel 5 KTLA.
Vampira drove a Chevy!
She was beautiful and an original. Elvira does not even hold a candle to her.
Elvira doesn't need to, there is no comparison, each are different and unique. Only lame brains feel the need for one or the other to justify some half witted comparison nonsense.
You could sense her distrust for Hollywood producers. It seethes underneath the surface of her macabre humor. "Do you like my cocktail? well, it hates you"
Ingenious.
I think that was a joke on the old 7Up ads that said "You like it. It likes you."
Most of what she said was written by others.
@Bella Bella You know I keep hearing that Elvira stole this and that from Vampira, but outside of wearing a low-cut black dress (Elvira's being significantly lower cut) I just don't see it. Vampira is playing up the creepy, spooky, eeriness of horror. Elvira played up the comedy, cheese, cornball side of horror and her personality was silly and outgoing while Vampira's was more somber and serious. I'd also say that as far as sex-appeal, Vampira was more subtly sultry while Elvira was more brazen. Not to mention Vampira actually went to court over this and her case was rejected by the judge who judged that there were enough significant differences between the two characters to qualify a claim for plagiarism.
@@StarryStarryNocturne I just heard about this story on the radio. Who knows how much was taken from Vampira by Elvira, but without the former, there definitely wouldn't have been the latter, and the bigwigs supposedly tricked Maila in their deal. Anyway, it's a very interesting story that needs further delving into...
@@spendingtimetogether8428 Maybe on the subject of horror show hosts, but that would apply to everyone that filled that role and not just Elvira. Where the look is concerned, though, like has been said before. That look was a thing out in the world since 1938 with the Addams family comic illustrations in the New Yorker. It's too iconic a look for no one else to have been influenced by it even if Vampira hadn't adopted it in a live-action sense first. And personality-wise and presentation-wise they couldn't be further apart from each other.
I had the privilege of meeting Maila Nurmi in 1997, at Kenneth Kendall's (artist and sculptor. Kenneth created the James Dean bust at Griffith Observatory in Los Angeles) home. Every year Kenneth hosted a James Dean birthday party on, or around February 8th, in honor of James Dean's memory. Maila was very sweet.
Absolutely love Vampira! Love her style, wit and voice. Such a beautiful, elegant classy lady with a rebellious edge! RIP Beautiful Maila ❤❤
Wish I could see all of those shows. Would be cool to see every Friday at 10 p.m. Don't you agree?
Toss all the reality crap and put stuff like this one, and maybe I'd actually bother to have live TV. It's so not worth it now, it's all trash and commercials and when there's something decent, it's usually on streaming only anyway.
Unfortunately, none of the footage was preserved and nothing is known to exist aside from this clip..The show was never broadcast outside of LA and only ran for a year!.
@@mchobbit2951 - I agree 👍
Absolutely what a amazingly creative show from this time, we could only wish to enjoy a Friday night extravaganza with Vampira
@@dgenerated Damn!
Now That's What I Call Showmanship she was incredible
Imagine if they brought back all of these shows now. I love Morticia Addams, Elvira & now Vampira, who I'm just recently introduced too. I think its time we get a new leading lady to come out of the darkness & play.
I would love that! Wonderful ladies especially Vampira. She is my favourite of the three. A beautiful lady who was well ahead of her time, love her look, wit and voice ❤
Don't forget STELLA, from the 1980s!
she is absolutely gorgeous 😩🖤🖤 love her
That scream was epic lol
She's actually quite beautiful!
She's looks like she could be the mother of Bettie Page and Dita Von Teese
Umm Bettie Page is only 1 year younger than her...
@@Fireglo I don't think you get the point of the comment.
Dita von teese look like the offspring of them both.
Bettie: vampria I want you to be my baby mama
Vampria: of course how are you going to get pregnant if don't surrender yourself to me

She so cute and beautiful let name her Dita von teese
She was in her 30 by this time. she was really gorgeous when younger when she first came to America.
@@1940limited she was born in Massachusetts USA
I think she could be a Smash Hit even today
I agree. She was quite good. Stood the test of time very well.
I love her! She wasn’t particularly goth or anything she was being herself which was naturally goth and spooky. I aspire to be like her she’s amazing
No Vampira was very much a character. All of her jokes were written by somebody else. If you look up pictures and videos of Nurmi outside of her Vampira drag, she’s really nothing like the character.
OMG so awesome! I thought this was like lost footage I thought they didn't have any live footage of vampira that's awesome
She walked so others who followed in her footsteps could run
"Everybody knows electricity is for _chairs"_
She's beautiful 💕
I love Vampira
Miss her so much. Very alluring, haunting, and captivating woman. Who cares if she was a ghoul.
the one and only
Punk rock, goth, emo owe everything to this woman
I can see where tales from the crypt got it's inspiration.
Tales from the crypt pre dates this
@@javi__... I meant the tv series format.
I definitly see simelarties between her and Elvira.
Elvira is very loud, off-color and teen like. She is indeed a fun watch
Vampira does fit the bill more for the late night movie darkness...while she is sarcastic (although more sublty and darker toned sarcasm) she is genuinely terrifying in a intended way.. she is spooky but captivated. Very very ahead of her time.
Like a mother-daughter duo!
Elvira actually took over her job and stole her whole look and act from her
@@salamander8301 stole the look, maybe, but a different act
@@cry-piddawg nope she took her whole thing from her. She was less campy but wasn't as good
Hollywood Golden era legend...Vampira
THIS WAS BEFORE TV SHOWS: "ADDAMS FAMILY" "DARK SHADOWS" & "MUNSTERS!"
The Adams family movie yes, but the Adams family was created first.
It's hard to know the culture of the time but it would seem that she was the trendsetter for the tongue in cheek macabre on TV.
@@brockbaby Yes she was.
@@mehermusic2154 No it was Universal and their collection of Monsters that set the trend. Everyone else was trying to cash in.
vampira was inspired by mortisha addams (comic series)
Hollywood History 101. Man there was some amazing content way early on in TV.
I've never gotten to see parts of her show before except the opening, thank you for this. Do any full episodes exist or longer excerpts? These seem to be edited from something. Thanks again.
Ya, to my knowledge there’s no surviving full episode of this series and probably because it was not only forgotten by most but because it only lasted for a year and a half while other horror hosts lasted slot longer
The media used was at a premium. Sadly it was either reused, or destroyed. :(
Nothing exists as it was before video tape it was live
There's a slim possibility that some kinescopes may still exist, forgotten in some vault.
They have already found three or four of them, including this one.
I wouldn't get your hopes up too much, though.
The Vampira Show was never preserved and no known episodes exist.. The show was only broadcast in LA for only one year.. Just like the film "London After Midnight", it's lost to the sands of time!.
She is such a great character, she doesn't spit unending facts at you like newer horror hosts, but she definitely does a great job getting you in the mood to watch a horror movie. Good work.
I love Vampira, and the book written by her niece is a great read
Who's here because of the old Chiller Theatre opening? She was brilliant, truly haunting.
I remember that horror ensemble! It was on ch.11 WPIX TV in 1960s NYC. It had the scarieriest music I ever heard when it began with Vampira walking towards you at the first scene. As a boy I was scared but I got a kick out of it!
I love her so much
She seems awesome, but it's sad I don't get to meet her.
Holy crap, this must be where Kubrick grabbed some music for The Shining.
There's music in here That's the same used in The Shining. Wow!
wow!! would've been so cool to watch this on tv.
Movies shows like this held your attention.
She was the original Elvira! Can't believe I haven't seen this before!
That’s why the song Vampira from the misfits was made
The Originator. The Architect. And the smallest non surgical waist in history.
I'm so ecstatic that these videos are still around for people who were not born yet like me. I love this sort of thing . Vampira is the original Scream Queen much more than Elvira . Elvira more of a comedian version. Vampira her scream was outrageous. There will never be anyone that could be s wonderful as Vampira RIP the Real Scream Queen
Thank for showing this i never knew about her i only know Doctor Shock and Stella the man-eater from Manayunk and mr. Creeper and Doctor Grave Digger those are the only ones I knew I watch when I was a kid thank you for showing this
I think she’s so beautiful
I love this stuff! Lovely Vampira seems to have been ahead of her time. I wonder why her show was cancelled? Maybe it was shocking stuff back then like Elvis.
one of her friends who was also a celebrity died and people started to spread rumors that she was involved in his death by using black magic so her show was sadly cancelled
That celebrity friend was James Dean, her show was cancelled not long after his fatal car crash (the reply before mine has information on how she was thought to have cursed him or his car.) She was also blacklisted sometime in 1955( I'm unsure of what year) and never got another acting role in Hollywood again.
@@454aubrey she appeared in a bunch of movies after 1955, some under her Vampira name (like Plan 9 from Outer Space and The Beat Generation), others uncredited (like I Passed For White). In 1962, she was cast in The Magic Sword (as the Sorceress) under her real name Maila Nurmi.
It was a mixture of James Dean’s death and her refusal to copyright Vampira, she could be stubborn and so she received the rebound of the blacklist, she did briefly revive Vampira on a lesser channel but apart from that her only other legacy was Plan 9 and the artwork in later life
On top of what everyone else has said she also got attacked & became reclusive afterwards.
something fascinating about her. Her life was sad.wish I could have met her!
Such a great artist who was way ahead of her time on so many different levels that it was to much for the mainstream media and some of its consumers , particularly jealous wives who’s husband’s never missed a show.! Fact. 😂
I watched it religiously when I was very young. When I was in the Navy in 1962-4 I watched a knockoff in San Diego called MoonaLisa, not as good as Vampire.
HollywoodGraham jeez you must be old! wouldve loved to have known what it was like back then!
This is amazing 😍
'electricity is for chairs' LOL true class. cant believe ive never heard of her before
Be god damned if Stanley Kubrick didn't have that music bed recreated almost exactly in "The Shining."
Carl Howard He did that all the time! I don't think he ever actually hired a composer! He just used public domain pieces!
Oh yeah, he did, however that might have been earlier in his career - and I see that he did for "Full Metal Jacket" and "Eyes Wide Shut" too. If you remember, for "2001: A Space Odyssey," he had meant to have a conventional score, but wound up just using the classical pieces in his own workprint instead.
@@1andonlyzara you never heard of Wendy Carlos?
IKR!? I was wondering where I heard that before and then I was like, "Wait a second..."
True!
Encore, Encore, we want more!🖤
I was genuinely scared as of that scream.
Famke jansen looks a lot like her🤯
Every bar should have a Vampira Cocktail 🍸🖤
To a podcast by Lena Dunham called the c word where she was one of the people highlighted. Really really well done. Worth a listen. What a tragic life this woman lived
The music was used in parts of The Shining.
Her grave at the Hollywood cemetery does not do her justice
It was paid for by donations because she had no money and nobody when she died.
Her niece Sandra didn't have enough money to pay for a big headstone for her grave. However, she said in her book (Glamour Ghoul: The Passions and Pain of the Real Vampira, Maila Nurmi) that she hopes to change it one day for one that would suit her Hollywood icon auntie Maila better. ❤️
Too bad KABC didn’t save these shows
My kind of ghoul!
So, am I the only one impressed by her incredible waistline?!😲
Nothing to be impressed by, she wears corsets
@@skippygirl959 actually she used a flesh-wasting poultice of meat tenderizer to eat away her skin in order to get her waist like that. spooky stuff

Love the fact that she smokes and drinks on her show. She's kick ass! VvvvV
She had class. I wish she were around today or someone who could fill her shoes.
True goth queen!!
Great riff using the tagline for 7up: "You like it...it likes you". She was brilliant. Perfect punch-line delivery, voice and tone and wickedly funny. Cassandra Peterson (Elvira, Mistress of the Dark) had nothing on Maila Nurmi.
I agree. Miss Nurmi was MUCH better.
They each had their own style of presentation, Nurmi was real macabre whereas Cassandra was valley girl macabre. Kudos to both!
@@angelitakerlin359 Elvira might say that she has her charms.
It's like comparing a poisoned apple (Vampira) to a juicy peach (Elvira) they are very different. I like Elvira though. 😊
how is that her waist could practically fit through a thimble
She would drink meat tenderizor
Corset
Simply legendary!
Awesome
she certainly was a vanguard of sorts - a bad ass in fact
Vampire, obviously an inspiration to Pete “Mad Daddy” Myers, years later on WHK radio, Cleveland Ohio 1958/9.
2:35 You like it? It hates you LMAO
Amazing to think this was in 1954. That's exactly 10 years before the Addams Family and Munsters tv shows began (both 1964).
Do we know who stole her memorabilia from her family yet? I know there is supposed to be a book, The Vampira Diaries coming out... but it was promised in print in fall 2019 with a gofundme raising almost $21,000..then a release in early 2021..seems like the project is having trouble. Is there any more reliable information on any of these topics? I'd like to buy Vampira merch ethically for once..meaning, in the name of (in)human decency, her FAMILY should profit. 🦇
Vampira was awesome
Love it-Horror should always be Camp!
Zacherle and a number of other imitators put their own spin on her routine.
This is so groovy!! Does anyone know who the man introducing it is?
The couch, the background, the dress, the dark humor. I hate to say Elvira just copied Vampira 😪
Actually what happened is that they were going to remake vampira, but due to the rumors involving james dean's death, they had to change characters, that's hiw elvira was born. Also, the same producer that produced vampira produced elvira.
And extra info of vampira, she went to a halloween party dressed as Morticia adams, and wen the producer saw her, they came up with the show.
Tl,dr: Elvira was created by the same producers of Vampira due to issues with the original actress, so she didn't copy her.
Just search Morticia, Vampira and Elvira on you tube and you'll see a video with a more specific story.
She looks nothing like Elvira. Idk what people are talking about.
Elvira is a thousand times superior. She looks better, her voice is better, her jokes are better, her charisma and sass is better. There's a reason Vampira never became an icon but Elvira did.
WHATEVERS! VAMPIRA is Still The Original Queen GOTH!
@@Fireglo Elvira could not have done her shtick in 1954. It was a different time. Hollywood and the horror genre failed to capitalize on Vampira. She was in her 30's at the time. But she would have remained a natural for the macabre even in her golden years.
I am surprised she was not judged by the churches, then called a Satanist during the 1950's.
I am glade people embrace her in her area.
"Screaming relaxes me so"
she was incredibly beautiful, and her look is the basis of any goth woman ever since
Vampira walked so Morticia could run.
Cassandra Petersen is a lovely person but she ain't got nothin' on Vampira.
