- You asked for it, so here it is, our morning routine video. We had to record it on a Saturday instead of a school day because it was just too hectic. What are the differences with autism mornings vs. typical morning routines? Let us know how your routine goes in the comments! Thanks everyone.

Autism-Famil...
I’m 27 and i struggle so much with hygiene (as in brushing teeth due to sensory issue). I find that your idea for the tooth brush also helps me. I also have to have either my pillow case or a stuffie when I go out of the house, helps with anxiety. Your boys have grown so much. I’ve been watching since Ian was little. You all are an amazing family!❣️
I can’t stand electric toothbrushes, I’m not a morning person because I don’t sleep well and a mass buzzing in my mouth that feels like one of those machines they dig hard surfaces like concrete up with, it feels like that in my head. My feet are stimming thinking about it
I hate brushing as well. I have to put it under the water every time I brush because I just like it better when it runs under water for a few seconds. And I put a dot of toothpaste on it because again I hate the fell of the the toothpaste. I haven't been tested for autism yet. But my mother is getting me into cams. Where they can test me. My friend just got tested and they said that she does have it. And I have almost every symptom she has but I think a bit more if yes. So I have to get tested In the next year at least
Try an electrical toothbrush appliance you can buy them in any toothbrush store these days and are not too expensive like they use to be... They make aq vibration and sound that some find soothing and they apply a more even pressure on each tooth that may mitigate the sensitivity you commented on in your previous post...
I love these kids. Listen to them. They’re so honest. They already have something to say as soon as they wake up. Not me! I don’t wanna talk to anyone! And Ian is getting so tall and handsome!
I can relate to Alistair being so hyped in the morning. I'm one of those who can just hop right out of bed and happily go about my day 😀
Lucky😂
I wish I could just wake up and have energy, my alarm goes off in the morning and I don't even leave my bed until half an hour after it
@@Wizdabest1 haha I do have 2 alarms 15 mins apart to give me warning but when I'm up I'm raring to go 😊
And I can't relate to that at all 😅
Same
I feel like having a routine in the first place is already one of the best things to do with autistic children, I have autism myself and having a routine for the mornings and evenings really helps me by knowing what to expect
Wow I'm so proud of Ian he looks like he's doing so much better then in his younger years! Happy for you guys!
as an autistic person the morning routine is SACRED. LITERALLY TODAY I WENT THROUGH MY MORNING ROUTINE FOR GETTING THE SCHOOL PERFECTLY UNTIL I GOT TO THE CORNER STORE I ALWAYS GET SNACKS OUT JUST TO FIND OUT THAT I HAVE A **2-HOUR DELAY**. I LITERALLY CRIED THE ENTIRE WAY HOME IF ANYONE MESSES UP MY MORNING ROUTINE I WILL HIT THEM
Sorry for your struggles
@@AutismFamilyChannel its just part of the daily grind ig
I love how you have a wake routine for your boys, one time I remember my told me that Her son who’s my cousin. He’s the Autistic one didn’t like taking a showers I’m like I wish I could of done something about that, because my cousin would have listen to me if I made him take a shower. You have no problem telling your boys what to do in the morning, they already know what they’re have to do each morning.😊😊😊
I try to limit how much I have to do in the morning because I will forget stuff. Basically eat breakfast and get dressed everything else is done. Shower, lunch. Hair I just keep it short to be able to wake up and go.
Ian I am so impressed with him getting himself awake and ready to go to school! I really think he will be independent later in life. His progress and growth is through hard work and I think an employer would be lucky to have someone with his traits.
Allister I am impressed you have been able to shower and bathe yourself. He's so goofy. He looks like such a joy to be around.
Educational & entertaining both at the same time. I love how you said "flannel suitcase" by mistake but still included a visual of a flannel suitcase!! I replayed that part more than a few times 😆
As someone with autism it is very nice seeing other people brave enough to go on camrea
I’m late diagnosed ASD after going into pretty severe burnout at 43, and was struggling with bathing for so long, and couldn’t figure it out, until I realized I was so stressed by finding my clothes in the morning that I would just shutdown and avoid the entire process.
Also, thank you so so much for the meltdown videos. It has helped me, and also my parents, to cope with and understand my meltdowns 🙏🙏
It’s such a different seeing how independent Ian is compared to the others and also shows how far he’s come from only a few short years it’s actually kind of impressive. However, he still has some things that he forgets his medicine for example, well that’s a whole another story that you don’t want to see.
My son has issues with hygiene...
Hes 28 now... and he lives far away, he lived at home till 19 ..
I made the mistake of sending him to Wisconsin to stay with his father cause he wanted to work after highschool and he couldn't find any work...
His Dad is a tenured professor at University of Wisconsin..
He thought he was going to transform Daniel into a regular guy, an academic, etc etc... he got a job immediately, started school.. dropped classes, quit his job, wrecked his car...
His nuerotypical siblings started having typical lives while he was treated like a science experiment by his dad ( we treated him like any other kid..)
His dad even said something Bout schizophrenia.
Well... Daniel had different issues , and excelled at many things , but never did he seem weirder than 4 years into living with his dad..
Anyway, it's a lonely horrible existence at school... my son has never had friends, he's unhappy, never kissed a girl, my poor son..
Now he's a grown man...I haven't heard from him in 2 months
😔
I feel so bad for you, but you sound like a very caring mother, why did he go live with his dad and why cant you be in his life now, is his father not letting you? 😔❤
Im so sorry.
Im 28 and Ive never kissed anyone either but im not sad about it at all and have no real friends but im not sad, I have my mother and granny and stepdad.
I hope your son gets into contact with you very soon! ❤
As a legitimate expert in autism as a profession, I can confidently say your boys are the coolest people ever. I always joke with my autism parents: "whats so cool about being neurotypical anyway" lol. You have some gifted young men here. And they are clearly being raised right. With ample psychoeducation and plenty of opportunities to practice life skills. This is a rare combination and I respect you and your wife so much for it.
I have worked with countless ASD parents who are terrified to say the "A word" around their child, and as a consequence they never have an honest conversation with their child about their diagnosis and how it may or may not play a role in their life experienees. This in my opinion is a terrible mistake. It is so nice to see how normal the "A word" is in your family and how familiar with autism as a diagnosis your boys sesem to be. I love it
This comment made me feel warm and comfortable in my whole body😊😊❤
YOU ARE SO AWESOME!!
WOW.
I wish more adults could be like you.
We NEED people like you in this world, you honestly made me feel more hopeful for society with this comment....
Just *thank you!*
❤❤❤❤
I really wish mmy family could meet someone like you who taught them to not be embarrassed because of me.
They say theyre only "worried when I do certain things" but those things are for example stimming (not harmfullly) in public, saying my odd repetitions or things like that 🙁😳
This comment just makes me feel really comfortable about being myself for the first time in a long while.
You MUST become a parent if you're not already!!
That child will be so so SO lucky to have you! ❤
My Brother with ASD paces in the kitchen every morning after he dose gets dressed hygiene and taking his medication for about 10 minutes then he also listens to his music and rocks while doing it this is something new this school year but we've noticed it has helped him a lot.
I don't have Autism but I do have FAS ( Fetal Alcohol Syndrome) and a lot of sensory issues. I always have to remember to bring a fidget to school with me or I really struggle. I take my medications also In the morning I also have to do my stretches every morning before we wait in the driveway for our bus for my back issues touching my toes arm over head on both sides side twists and I stretch my legs if I don't do these every morning my back starts to hurt and sometimes I can become irradiated and anxious in school.
I really enjoy your videos!
Showering and brushing teeth is such a pain to me, not because of the sensation but because of my compulsions which make it longer
How long does it take? Average is around 8 and 5 minutes respectively...
I also pick clothes day before as I'm not a morning person. Also relate to high water pressure being physically painful on skin. I love Conner's space shirt (as a t-shirt though, I don't wear long sleeve shirts). I also wear sweatpants and t-shirt year round! I love the cold so only wear a light jacket if it's windy as it's the wind chill that gets me.
My 12yo autistic granddaughter Ellie sleeps w/ 7 blankets bc she needs a heavy feel. Mom’s retired military & tries her best w/ her + 3 kids
I just recently found this channel and the idea with the hot water on the toothbrush is a great idea. My son has autism as well.
Are autism morning routines that different? YES! I think it’s very hard for some to understand this. My son, Slade, is 7 and has autism. We definitely have problems when we realize there’s no milk! It’s almost a cringe moment for us as parents because we know how upsetting it will be for Slade. I like your simple trick of hot water for the toothbrush! That part of the morning is always a struggle in our house. Thank you for sharing your family with us.
Recalling some of my "School Days" (too long ago), my biggest challenge was remembering to put on clothes. Sometimes I would forget to put on one sock. There was always something. And yes, I even went out the door without my pants one day, but I did not get far before my parents noticed. Clothes and I did not get along. Pretty much any food that is normally eaten for breakfast I do not like. (That continues to this day). Teeth brushing was painful, and I seemed to lack the dexterity to master it.
Of Note: From the time I could walk until about the age of 4, my parents could always find me (indoors or outdoors) by following the trail of clothing I shed until all clothing was off. Apparently, we always had understanding neighbors! The first several years of school it was really hard for me to stay in clothes. By the time I returned home I was wearing only pants, all else was in my arms.
I recall on my school days I would lay out what outfit I would wear to school the next day so I would not rush. I even showered the night before for the same reason.
Thanks for sharing another good video:) I totally understandable and can relate. I have form of autism too. Hair is my struggle, got it short to help, lol.
I appreciate your channel so much, thank you again:)
Hi family! Thanks for the nice video about morning routine! Well done for the boys. I hope that everything is fine with you all. A big hug from the Netherlands. 🇳🇱😃❤️🇺🇲
I swear you're everywhere!
Brittny, your skin is beautiful! Love watching you guys
WHY the “Kids” are so handsome!
I've noticed that I have a really bad morning if one of my siblings is in the bathroom when I wake up. My morning routine is usually wake up, use the bathroom, wash my face, take care of my mouth, and then get dressed (including my Studio C bracelets I got while on a tour of BYU Broadcasting. I wear them everyday💖) and put lotion on.
I actually have a routine with putting on lotion: I put on one that helps with dry skin, then I rub a tiny bit of a different lotion with a smell I LOVE on my palms so I can smell my hands, then I rub some stress relief aromatherapy inhaler under my nose so that if I need a different smell, I can just press down on my nose and then I can smell.
I am pretty much out of my lotion because I use it a LOT and, because my parents don't want to encourage my "obsession", I am scraping the insides to get some out. I don't know why, I just always need to be smelling something.
Those kids are a blessing
These videos are so helpful for me as a grand parent. Thanks for bringing them to us ❤
7:20 I had a terrible cold back in December. Went to get checked out by a doctor. She suggested honey. 🍯 Normally, not a product I would use but I decided "doctor's orders" and there was no harm in trying it. Tea ☕ and honey 🍯 is delicious. 😋
Love your guys family I am happy to subcribed to your channel cant wait to see more of your content.
I had to go to a hospital foam kind of toothbrush. Toothbrushes really annoy the crap out of me. Ian is so tall. Taller than me now.
Btw, I use dental foam sponge things on a stick to clean my teeth. That’s what’s often used in nursing homes, institutions, residential programs etc. They work better for me and they allow the toothpaste to be put all over my mouth without pain or anything. I also get grape toothpaste because I hate mint.
Glad to see more videos!!!!!!
Neurodiverse routines are so so so important. Any fluctuations greatly distress me so I totally get this and its importance
OVALTINE! My autistic granddaughter that Im raising lives on it! There is not a lot of foods she will eat. But ovaltine made with milk has always been her go to. It has 15 vitamins and even relaxes or comforts her. So if I run out of milk (lol) I have to run to the store!
love the video and routine videos are educational these types of videos are my favorite
Such an amazing family!
You awesome family. Awesome children and parents ❤️
Hi Rob. A question that has been on my mind and it would make an AWSM video is, “How do people with Autism react to different types of Music?”
*This was a great and much needed video. Routines are very important.
Interesting question. We will have to research it more 😉👍
Rob, if it will help you with research, I have autism. The music that gets me agitated are hip hop and heavy metal. The music that is very soothing is smooth jazz. Particularly Kenny G. I also feel joy whenever I hear 60s pop/rock and roll. Especially The Beatles.
My morning routine is almost like a Cadet from West Point,Annapolis,New London,King’s Point, and Colorado Springs.
All of your children are absolutely precious and each remind me of my own autistic son in different ways 🙏🏻
Your kids are very responsible & independent. I love how they do their own hair & make sure their teeth are brushed. I was really impressed with Ian & how he does so much on his own or with little supervision. That's awesome. I love honey bunches of oats as well & never thought of putting honey on them. Thanks Ian. : )
Hi I'm an autistic kid I recently got diagnosed and it's all because of you cause my mom saw your video and she noticed a lot of ripetitive behaviors on me im soon going to get my first check up and I'm a bit nervous can you make a video of what happens during check ups please it will really help me
Thank you guys for this video I have been waiting for this one love you guys ❤️
Yep, definitely remembered your requests, thank you ;)
@@AutismFamilyChannel I hope you buy more milk so you don’t run out of it
@@AutismFamilyChannel will your Boys be interested in making a birthday video for me since my birthday is June 26th 2023 and I’ll be 23 years old
I love your videos and your family ❤️ sending love from Philippines
Great routine video Rob 😄
Something that might help Conner with his hair is if he puts the gel directly onto the comb instead of having to put it on his hands.
I havent been following you all for awhile...the boys are growing up! We got the same problems getting our 15yo guy up and out for school. 😑
This video is so helpful !
My morning routine for work is It’s not really a routine, I get up. And I get my internship clothes on (I’m in project said like I said before) and then I get ready for transportation and I have some water (yes I do skip breakfast which is a bad habit at times😭) So it’s not really as set but I do sometimes make my bed before I get there, and I do take my medicine, but even with my medicine sometimes I will have bad days with anxiety, but with the internship program my meltdowns and freak outs have decreased but my body language has increased because of it, and plus I’m trying to do more things independently, but I’m also trying to help with my family and staff at p.s. helping me out.
Hope you have a great day and you all are amazing!
Loved watching this
One thing that is really upsetting to me is when I have no choice but to eat food , any at all , straight after brushing my teeth or having something minty!
Thank you so much for sharing your story...You have no idea how much this has helped me in my own situation as a care giver ❤My morning routine is typically walking on egg shells because I do not know what will set him off 😬...I just pray I can get him on the bus, then exhale when I do, until he comes back home 🙄Then I'm back to gauging what to expect...🧐
You seem to have a fairly relaxed school morning, mine is the total opposite with my 13 year old, he never wants to get up, won’t have an alarm to wake him, I get shouted at, he won’t get dressed, he doesn’t want to leave for school, by the time we leave we have both been shouting for quite a while. I really hate school mornings.
To be fair to you, we did record this on a saturday so the stress associated with getting out the door in time wasn't present.
I guess sometimes for no real reason things seem to just go wrong even though everyday is the same routine, my boy just hates leaving the house I guess it’s his safe space so I do understand, but it’s hard to get him out for school.
@@carolinebeckwith948 We definitely understand that.
Can you please make a video about risperidone and abilify . My son is currently on risperidone and is developing those tics. Please
Hehehe he’s already awake ahead of you 😅. Same with my son here.
Those kids are delightful 🥰
I have a question. How did you get Ian to take his medicine with no problems? My son is 12 and I still have to crush it and put it in his drink. By the way, you guys are very inspirational. I don't feel so alone seeing other parents like yourselves handle the daily grind.
Ian prefers to take his medicine because he hates how he feels off meds. Alistair has a lot of difficulty with pills so we have to mash them and hide them in food (he's not on meds, I'm talking about ibuprofen for when he's sick or in pain).
@@AutismFamilyChannel Oh ok thank you!
Your boys are really smart. We go through a lot of milk at my home as well a gallon a day.
Ian, you're right, honey is good for you. It helps to boost your immune system & if you eat local honey, it can help with your allergies.
I am 26 diagnosed at age 21 , I wake up by 8:00 , make eggs take medicine concerta and lexipro before work , work on a puzzle or play video games til 9:30 then brush teeth get out ready for work by 10 then we leave by 10:30 start work at 11
Well first thing is bathroom time lol, then breakfast and getting dressed is the fun part slow as a turtle lol. Thank goodness he makes it on time lol.
My morning routine is basically the same as the others, I will brush my teeth, take a shower, and take breakfast(normally I will just eat some bread or some cookies),I like night time more than morning
This is great, we really appreciate what you do here in your channel because we get a lot of ideas here for our son from your family, thank you! We have a PEC routine board for my son and it’s always the same exact routine, we switch what he has for breakfast but he knows it’s only a number of things which he likes. We do assist him with getting ready bc he’s still 5 almost 6, but we give him things to do and are teaching him to do things on his own 1 step at a time. Like now he can put on his own clothes but still sometimes wants our help so I’ll tell him I will put on your socks but you have to put on your shirt and pants (2 for 2) ❤
Which is worse: Ian not taking his medicine in the morning or Alistair forgetting his flannel pillow case?
Yes…just kidding. Ian missing his medicine generally is worse because his emotional state stays compromised until we get him help. Sometimes Alastair can be distracted from missing his pillowcase
That makes sense.
I'm 30s i'm struggling ASD,Adhd and Dyslexia having meltdown is not okay.
It’s really not when you turn 30. It may still be ok in your 20’s but now growing in the 30. I can relate I turn 30 in March
I always have to do a routine and Im 15 and even though I dont have autism I still love routines however I do have adhd which is very similar to autism
Keep safe guys.
thank you for showing me how it works und was it is.
I’m 23 and I have autism and I remember sleeping with a couple blankets a lot as a kid
I’m actually just like Alistair: I wake up happy even if I woke up at 4am and I go to bed happy. Every single day: my twin sister who also has autism is NOT like that: she needs plenty of time in the morning to wake up, mean while I’m jumping up and down on a mattress I’m so excited to start the day
how old are you? Write a diary now about how u are happy and how you see the world. perhaps if you aren't so happy as an adult you can reread it and see there is good and you are capable of being happy. hopefully you always stay happy, and if you do the best gift you can give everyone is to be their friend and allow your personality to rub turne off on them. I'm naturally pessimistic but whenever I'm around my partner he makes me more depressed with the vibes and him being so down about everything. the happiest i remember being is ties I've been around happy bubbly people and I've seen subconsciously we are actually really lucky. even the crappy things in a day optimists handle without getting angry or upset. my partner will hate the world and complain about every little thing and it makes it so hard to be the slightest bit happy the whole day. anyway just wanted to say whatever it is you find tat allows you to wake up like that record it down or bottle it and sell it... and just your company is a gift to people who are not as happy as you. you don't have to try to cheer people up just your presence when your happy does that. from an old woman who has seen a lot but wishes i could be you!
I have high-functioning autism. I was diagnosed at age 2.
Nice video ❤❤❤
I think prompts are often helpful.
I act very "normal" but I have always struggle with things, and is interesting that life may me found this, I stop brushing my teeths at age 6, because my parents would not check on me, they told I already learn how to do it, so I didn't do it until one of my teeths hurts and I was scared that my parents would found out, later at 13 I go for first time to a check with a dentist and he took one of my teeth out because it was sooooooo bad.
Well done apppriate it I know hard it can be I have au😢tomorrow there teachers strike how can I cope
My son (8) doesn't take a shower, ever, it tickles. He barely washes up in the morning so we gave it up and just help him wash teeth and face. The rest of the body is washed at other times. Generally morning routines for me is a challenge.
7:17 me & ian have the same favorite cereal
0:58 😂I love him 😂.
Hellloooo!! first 🎉
Also what we have been doing for my concerta since it is a controlled substance when we get the refil each month we save the extra pills so we always have extra so there is never a missed dose due to doctors or the pharmacy, we have about 16 saved extra not sure if it that would help
Ian, such remarkable progress as he has “aged”! HEY Pops! Cornsider Getting some Full Fat Powdered Milk! You will always have Milk!
What is thee medication? I'm not a fan of meds but if it helps staying in control? I did take my niece off melatonin as it was just behavioural with bed time routine, but she still got night terrors and recently sleepwalking x
I have autism I was diagnosed when I was a child. I grew up in the 60s and 70s so there wasn’t a lot known about autism then and there were no therapist to help me. I didn’t have any help with autism I struggle every day.
Oh my days my nieces electric toothbrush is not working and she told me the bristles are to hard as it should be electric and I have to get her a soft toothbrush 😅
Hi, can you please say what is the name of the medicine that Ian was showing. Thanks!
Can u talk about showering ? I love being clean but the sensory about showering is just horrible.
Our 2 youngest used to hate the sensation of the shower.
Connor, like moi as child; has incredibly thick hair!
8:10 might wanna take him to an orthodontist 🦷
This doesn’t relate much to the video but I just remembered a useful product for if you struggle to tie shoe laces. try rubber shoe laces they come in plain or colourful and they stretchy and easy to get your shoe on and off.
We can’t keep up with Milk in our house, either. I’m talking 4-8 litres gone in 1.5 days
I would not like no school on Saturday. You might wonder why. It’s something to do with my autism.
Ooo! Alister has a SpongeBob backpack. I'm a big SpongeBob fan.
Oh nooo, you run out of milk! If your children get through so much milk, you should adopt a cow, do you have any nearby fields where you could "park" her? :)
I wish
I dont cope if something in my routine cant happen. So finding there was no milk would have messed up my entire day. I couldnt have had breakfast if i discovered there was no milk. I also struggle with showering and teeth brushing. But i need the shower to be high pressure or i dont do well. I cant handle the soft falling water. I struggle with transitioning from one activity to the next in a routine. So i need minimal things. Put on clothes and eat something might be the most i could manage. I could make myself do teeth brushing if i was going to be near people. But a shower also would be one thing too much. I dont like being damp after a shower so i need a towel that will make completely dry. Im not a big fan of water and being wet. I used to be ok with swimming for part of my childhood. But now i hate being wet unless it cant be avoided like showering.
I have no idea where to begin. Well, the little guy wakes around 4:30-5:30am and immediately goes to the kitchen where he'll pull a kitchen chair to the counter, climb up to the cabinet and get him an apple juice (they're 40% vitamin water). Then he'll ask for whatever he wants to eat and it's always cereal, pancakes, waffles, cream-of-wheat, oatmeal or noodles - oh and sausage. By this time his sister is up and eats pretty much the same except noodles. After they eat, they play a bit because it's still early - then it's bath time (they love baths). Then brushing teeth and doing hair - these processes are like trying to wrestle a rhino. And DON'T touch little man's ears (I have to anyway). Clothes on, shoes on, crying, screaming, things thrown, falling to the floor, coats on out to the car and off to school. EVERY DAY...unless they're sick. I get a few hours off yearly, lol.
I thought he was putting hot sauce on the cereal at 7:45
Spicy breakfast ;)
@@AutismFamilyChannelI like to put salsa on my eggs! The rest of my family thinks that's gross!
Honey? In cereal? Honestly, that would taste good. Maybe not in very sugary cereals.
Just wondering if we will get to see the stop motion that Connor has been making or is it just for their own entertainment for now. As I have previously made a stop motion before and wanted to see what he had come up with. Just wondering that's all it's ok f he doesn't want to show them but only wondering that's all
Yes, he's excited to show it, but wanted to update it first.
@@AutismFamilyChannel oh nice. Can't wait to see it. Would he like to see what I've done? If he want to see it
What about cbd oil? Did You stop using it?

How too give training too autsim kids doing a house job?
2:17 Does Allister not like being ignored or interrupted?
