This was oddly therapeutic. The over the shoulder perspective really helped with that feeling.
Big BIG shoutout to Hellhound Leather Co for making this easy to install and absolutely beautifully ergonomic leather lever action wrap for my Henry .410 Axe ! 10 star review. There is nothing else on the market even comparable with this product! Thank you all so much! It truly makes this already beautiful rifle even more beautiful!!
Thank you so much for the kind words sir! We do our best to offer the best, so I'm glad you are pleased!
Eit ant easy
Well just thought I would let you know, After watching your video, and with your words of encouragement.
I ordered the large cocking handle for my cherished Henry Golden boy rifle. I followed your instructions and sewed leather on it. Then replaced the stock cocking lever. And it looks almost as good as if I had you do it for me!! Thank you! I am very proud of My rifle!
Now I feel like Ralphie in Christmas story!! Ralphie thought he waited a long time. Hum I had to wait until I was 73 years old..lol !
Thank you for the kind words George! I'm so glad that the installation went well for you! Those Henry rifles are easy to love; they're top notch and with a little leather dressing, there's not much out there thats better! 73 is a long time! Makes it all the sweeter when you get it though
Ordered one from amazon for half the price. Then came across your video and immediately returned the cheap wrap and ordered one from you for my henry golden boy. Cant wait to see the finished product.
haha Well, I've always lived by the old advice, "You get what you pay for". Thanks for the order and support!
Thank you for the video. This is a simple, easy to follow tutorial. Over the years I have sewn hundreds of leather items by hand, but I had never seen the finish like this. I’m sure it will work on some of the projects that I will be doing in the future.
Wearing gloves certainly helps protect the fingers as you pull the thread tight. My father had a shoe shop and leather repair business for about 70 years and my brother bought his business and is still repairing shoes and making leather products. My father and later my brother took an older pair of gloves and cut the first two fingers completely off and cut part of the thumb away, keeping the ring and pinky fingers of the glove. This allows you to have protection to pull the thread without hurting your fingers, but also allows you to have your thumb and first two fingers free for intricate work like rethreading the needle or scratching your ear. This has worked for them and for me. I suggest this because maybe it will be something you all can use. Once again, thank you for the tutorial.
Kenneth, Thanks for the suggestion - there's always such value in years of experience! I'm definitely going to be cutting some fingers from these gloves!
Awesome tutorial. Will happily buy from you guys again!
Just a note, when I did my leather work in the 60 - 70's for small stuff like you showed on the lever arm. I used to lightly dampen the leather so it moulded and fit a bit tighter and was easer to form.
Absolutely correct - thats a great tip and will help with the fit for sure!
The best instruction video out there for lacing your levers , great job and THANKS!!!!!
Thanks so much! I appreciate that!
Great instructional video. Simple, easy to follow instructions. Well done!! thanks
Thank you! I'm glad you think so!
I looked at other products before settling on this one. I'm glad I did. My Henry Golden Boy with large loop lever is now done and looks great! Materials, tutorial and techniques are superior. Especially the way the wrap is finished, tucking the tails of the sinews in using the finishing loop. Thanks!
Thank you so much for the kind words Douglas! I'm so glad that the wrap kit met your expectations!
After watching and reading the comments it’s just such a pleasure to read and watch quality work that shows Why and how we use to be proud to take pride in the work we do. The way people are just so disrespectful and angry these days I’m so glad I found your video. I’ll be in touch to order a few sets. This is how business works well. ✌️👍🇺🇸
Thank you so much John, we appreciate that very much! We really do care about our work, products and customers. If we can make a difference in our tiny corner of the world (while the storm of crazy-angry-nasty rages on) then its all worth it! We've been very blessed with really wonderful customers and friends. We look forward to doing business with you in the future!
Bought one for my marlin trapper, watched this video cause I’m pretty handy and thought crap this is gonna be hard, threw it in my vice and followed your instructions and it came out amazing! Thank you for the product and amazing video
Thank you so much! I'm glad that you're happy with how everything came out! Most people do great if they just take their time and follow along :)
Excellent work, A great tradesman at work. Thank you for the video. Barry, New Zealand.
Thank you very much Barry! Hello all the way to New Zealand!
Thanks so much! Just installed my wrap it looks amazing! Couldn’t have done it without y’all!!
Thats awesome! I'm glad it went well!
That is so neat. I have a Henry lever action rifle on its way to me now. As soon as I get it, I'm headed to Hellhound to purchase the lever wrap and then do the DIY. Thanks for this video. Enjoyed a full-watch of your tutorial. 👍🏽🙂
Thank you very much, I'm glad you enjoyed it! Looking forward to sending you a kit! Cheers!
Lots of great info. I didn't see until I had a list 1/4 mile long what I would need, but did notice you do installs. I'll be calling. Your video work is some of the best presentation I've seen.
Hey, thank you Roland, I appreciate that! And yeah, I'm happy to install for folks, just give me a ring :)
Thank you for this detailed tutorial! Because of your time, effort, and beautiful leather work, I purchased five sets! Thank you very much!
Thank you so much Josey, we really appreciate both the kind words and the business! Don't hesitate to reach out if you run into any snags during the install!
@@HellhoundLeatherCo I just finished my fifth wrap! Thank you again for your detailed instructions and your fine products!
Best wrap tutorial I have seen! Refer to it often!
haha Its the best one I've made! I'm glad you've found it helpful! Thanks for the kind words!
Just stitched one up on my Marlin 1894c with RPP medium lever loop. Looks great. Works like a charm. Thanks guys.
Awesome! Thanks for the business and I'm glad that its working well for you!
I just got mine installed and it looks and feels awesome! I'm super happy with how it turned out, this is an excellent tutorial. Thank you!
Thank you so much! I'm so glad you're happy with the installation and that the video was helpful!
wow, thank you for this video. I didn’t think I’d be able to pull it off since I’ve never even sewn a button on something. Thanks to this easy to follow video I was able to put my wrap on! AwesomeQ
I'm so glad you found it helpful! I'm also glad that the installation went smoothly! Thanks for the kind words!
Now that looks COOL!!! Beautifully done.
Thanks very much Gerry!
i know what I'm doing this weekend. Bravo!
Awesome! Reach out if you run into any snags or have any questions!
Great idea and beautifully done.
Thank you very much Steve!
I absolutely love the way this fit my rifle. I'm glad I ordered the second set of pre-strung sinew because I went too high without throughly tightening the first time around and could not get it tight enough. I also tried backing the first threads out to try and tighten again, but didn't really have luck. So, second set of threads through and made sure to keep it all tight and it works perfectly. (Also my first time ever doing something like this). But it looks great, and is defintely more comfortable that just the bare metal.
I just installed the wrap on my rifle. I also ordered an extra spool, but got lucky the first time. Hardest part was starting the needle through the holes.
I left the lever on the gun and had no other proplem. Nice kit !
The leather makes a huge difference for the knuckles :) I'm glad the installation went well overall!
Fantastic! Thx. RockOn.StayFree.
Thank you! 👊
I wish I had come across your video before I bought the wrap I chose, the instructions were so complicated where the stitching was concerned that It took me 4 or 5 tries before I got the idea. You had to really concentrate and watch what you were doing using their method and it does not look near as nice as yours. The simplicity of your method makes perfect sense, very similar to lacing your shoes. I might have to do over using your methods! THANKS
Well thank you very much Jerry - that's kind of you to take the time to say and we appreciate it! If you do decide to redo you wrap, let me know if you run into any snags and I'm happy to clarify or help!
The finishing loop is awesome. Thank you.
Pretty much a must have
haha I agree! Although really, it makes all the difference for your knuckles. When I first got my Henry, I tried a paracord wrap because I thought it looked kinda cool, but it hurt my fingers to use. So I worked out a snug-fitting leather wrap for it and even I was surprised at how much nicer it was.
I was an aprentis taxadermest. Well done. 3 years
Then you're a man who knows his stitching! Thank you!
Just did mine came out amazing
Thats great! Glad to hear the install went well :)
I’m going to need to grab this kit soon.
Thanks, if/when you decide to, let me know if you have any questions during installation - we're always happy to help!
Excellent tutorial!
Thanks so much! I'm glad to hear that its helpful
Great illustration, very well done & educational👍👍
Thank you very much!
Nice work, very instructive video
Thank you, I'm glad its helpful!
What happens at 3:08, the first stitch. The video jumps.
How strange. I don't remember the video being that way and missing those first stitches like that (they're pretty important and set the method for the whole process). Thanks for calling it to my attention! We'll actually be putting out another one soon to cover different points and questions folks have had over the years (and fix that big hole in the clip). For that section, once you loop the first holes and snug it, you would take your right hand needle, cross it over to the left side and stitch it through the first empty pre-punched hole, from the inside of the leather to the outside. Repeat the process with your left side needle, crossed to to right side going from the inside of the leather to the outside. Just like lacing a shoe. We'll redo the whole video very soon!
I feel like that would look even better with yellow/gold stitching to match the brass.
Agreed! We've been meaning to start offering different/interesting color options eventually. Gold is a great idea!
But it does look yellow lol
Very nice Video !!!!
Thank you very much Jack!
Thank you.
This is so cool
Thanks!
Dude you did A great job to me.
Thank you!
Very nice and informative video.
Thanks very much! I'm glad it was helpful!
Henry rifle owners beware…the lever is NOT nearly this easy to remove much less reinstall
This is true actually, especially recently. Back when we started they seemed simpler and most models we encountered were a simple removal, but lately the recent models that have been released are especially tricky.
For the Rossi is the same, not as easy
My henry 45/70 side gate is incredibly easy. Open lever half way, undue screw, slide out, slide lever back in, insert screw. Took me about 2 mins to install the large loop for it.
Awesome !
Geil echt Klasse Arbeit 👌👍
Vielen Dank!
I wrapped the lever on my Marlin i used for hunting. I decided to take it off years later. Rusted. I had to steel wool and re-blue it
It would be helpful to make a video on how to remove the Henry 22 lever. It’s a bit more involved. 😢
Yeah, I totally agree actually. I need to do that once I get my hands on a .22 model. There are also several of the new Henry models just recently released that are more difficult than the one I have, unfortunately.
Great work…!
Great video. Looks beautiful. Will be ordering this kit once I get my Henry.
Thank you so much for the kind words Bob - Appreciate it!
Great instructional video! One question why do you not dampen the leather first is it because of the lever being a metal and it can rust?
Good question! Most levers have been blued or finished and the chance of rust is pretty minimal. I just don't generally dampen the leather because there is no need. The leather is a traditional harness and tanned with a blend of waxes that make it firm but pliable, this makes it fairly easy to mold to the lever without getting it wet first :)
Very nice! Thank you I think I could do this. Maybe I will give it a try, If I screw up I will just reorder.
Thank you George! Nearly everyone who tries has great success - just go slow and follow along with the video and it'll go swimmingly for you!
Get the spare spool of sinew, just in case. I didn't need it, but was glad I had it as backup on my first try at this.
Great tutorial. Is it possible to have the shop install the leather if we send the loop? If so, are charges for the work posted on your website please?
That’s a really boss kit, thanks for the tutorial. I think that’ll look sweet on my ‘94. Does the trigger guard wrap really reduce the area to access the trigger? I usually shoot with gloves, may be a bit tight.
Thank you! We use a 6oz weight leather and so that means that its 2.4mm (3/32") thick and will reduce your space by that much. When you pair it with gloves, it can be too tight depending on the size of your fingers and how thick your gloves are. We haven't had any complaints about space in the trigger guard over the years, but that might be coincidental and we just happen to have slight-fingered customers haha
Somewhere around 3:29 you are starting out, and after crossing the threads you say,. "And take a needle," appearing to point a needle below the starting point, but then it jumps. At that jump it then shows you have already gone up to the second holes. Never does show where "take a needle" gets you. Or why.
👍👍
If I would choose to purchase the kit, and once removed the lever, could I send it to stitch? If so what would be the cost? Thank you.
Nice looking results, can this procedure be done with the baseball stich to?
Yes, absolutely - Whichever stitch pattern you'd like to use, the process is essentially the same. :)
Right around 12:14-15 y’all start to say “take your needle” then video appears to jump? Curious if step got skipped o’er, or if just editing thing.
I checked at the time stamp and its just an editing slip :)
Wtf happened at 3:12ish bc the video skipped and there's a cross section with advancement in the video?!?! What did I miss?? He says keep it loose then wtf
Hey Man, sorry about the bad edit. We're in the process of trying to refilm the video and replace it with one that doesn't skip. At that spot, keep it loose until you have one X up (stitch the sinew right over left, looped around the bottom holes and then one set of holes above) and then tighten it up all at once, keeping the bottom loop of lacing over the corners. If you need a walkthrough, give me a call and I'm more than happy to help over the phone. (385-707-3751)
Is the finishing loop necessary?
If you tie the ends of your sinew very well and cut them close, it is not absolutely necessary. However, using the finishing loop will give you a cleaner finished look and will ensure the sinew does not untie over time.
Nice job, but the trigger guard leather is superfluous. Its wanted on the lever, for padding forceful manipulation. Anyone operating that lever as intended, as in beating a rented mule, with their finger IN the guard is asking to drive the trigger THROUGH that finger.... no thanks.
Can I send you mine and have you do it with as close as you can get to black leather? It’s for a Winchester Model 94.
Hello! I'm sorry it took us so long to respond, somehow we didn't see this comment earlier! I would be more than happy to do that for you - folks send their levers in all the time to have them wrapped and turn around is only a couple days. Black is not a problem either, very common and looks great! Email me at gavin@hellhoundleatherco.com or text me at 385-707-3751 and we'll give you more information on where to send etc.
