- Timothée Chalamet talks about the influence (or not) that David Lynch's 1984 version of Dune had on his performance of Paul Atreides in the new Dune.

”You make yourself as humble as the source material asks you” Of course Lisan al Gaib would be humble enough to say that
Lisan al Gaib!!
Lisan al Gaib!
Lisan al Gaib!
AS ITS WRITTEN!
The whole theater laughed during that part.
"He's so humble, he truly is Lisan al Gaib"

The Lisan Al Gaib is too humble to say he is the Lisan Al Gaib
lian al gaib was anything but humble
Just as it was prophesied!
he is not lisan al gaib, he is a naughty, naughty boy!
“That was loud, sorry.” to care for our ears, he is truly Lisan al Gaib
He nearly used The Voice!

unironically tho, i suppose his personality IRL lends itself well to the character of Paul, and his Sincerety. Really great casting choice.
Impressive. Let's see Jodorowsky's Dune.
This is my new favorite comment
Let’s not. He sucks.
On and on about a movie that was never made.
let's not
We stilll gettin american psycho references even when christian bale and Jared leto arent even close to this clip😅.
Only Lisan al Gaib would be so humble
After Tim answers the question:
Stilgar: Lisan Al Gaib
Gotta give it to him; that was a well weighted answer.
for sure, gotta respect that answer !
horrible question, he basically give him his own answer instead of getting something interesting as a response
@@venomsnakessidepiece and yet we got an interesting response, so the question couldn't have been that horrible.
@@BelieveInUrself93It was an obvious and canned response. No actor who wants to be taken seriously will ever say they're just mimicking someone else's performance. They all say they try to make it their own. It's how they justify making a different version in the first place. Grow your analytical mind and stop being a fanboy.
@@modernmobster not a fanboy, not a fan at all. Think he was miscast in the role and does a passing job. I’m aware actors are only ever going to talk about what they brought to their fresh original take on a role. Nevertheless, I believe the question is always worth asking, and the response about making yourself as humble as the source material asks you to be, is to me, an interesting and thoughtful answer.
The guy answered his own question. Obviously, Timothée was going to say that.
Every actor says that
It's the problem with the press in general. A lot of them are failed writers or had dreams of being more than what they are, so they can't get out of their own way, drop the ego and ask very simple open ended questions. Instead of being patient Fishermen and baiting the hook, they feel compelled to show how much they know when we only care what the subject knows or is willing to share. Radio D.J.'s are horrible for this when they do interviews with Musicians. Eddie Trunk is a prime example. It's very important everybody knows how "inside' he is and how he knows all these people and the business. by the time he stops talking he's asked and answered every possible response to where the artist simply goes "Yeah" 🤤
It's not that bad. Even if he hadn't answered the two possible answers himself, it would have indeed been the two possible answers. I think it's about saving time: there's very little time to ask the question, but also to answer (this Q&A format isn't an in-depth interview, clearly), so might as well get the obvious stuff out of the way.
It was a very obvious question. Chalmamet wouldn't be much of an actor if he just copied a previous actor without thinking of this film's script.
@@Skoorayou need to invest in one (1) mirror asap
I loved Kyle's performance in the 84 Dune and thought it'd be hard to see the character as anyone else, but wow - Timothee was fantastic. a totally different interpretation well worthy of standing alongside the original
I actually wanted Kyle to be Shaddam in Dune 2021, as he is now much older (& of course older-looking) & has gray hair. Kyle would then reprise not the same role, but the same franchise/movie, as well as become 2 different emperors, as if he came back full circle, since Paul did become emperor after his take down of Shaddam.
04/19/24
@@robwebnoid5763 wow that would actually be really cool!
Cant wait for Chalamet role in the remake of Show Girls.
Me either. Been dying for that.
And The Flintstones
Yeah... but NOT in McLachlan's role..!
I never really knew much of T.C. before Dune but as its gone on i feel he's been cast with absolute perfection and he's took his role so sseriously its inspirational tbf. He's a good guy and deserves all the success he can get. 👌🏽🙌🏽
@Miles Doyle can you repeat that please bro? I got lost in chapter 2 paragraph 41 of your comment.😋
Yeah he's pretty much exactly who I imagined Paul to be.
I think he's the worst actor in the business right now. Took the crown from Brad Pitt, he's that bad.
@@charlesknowlton7198 What? There are obviously different tastes, but I thought he was great in Wonka as well as in Dune. He seems really talented to me and you can see he's smart and educated in the way he talks and makes his points. Just watch his conversation with Scorsese. At that age, having such an understanding of the business and performing at this level while also being able to have such a conversation with one of the greatest directors in history already sends some signals.
You can dislike him and that's fine. I'm saying this guy will take an Oscar prize home sooner than later. He's already great and he can only get better with age. The fact that he's perceived as humble and likeable will most definitely help him. Cheering for my guy.
@@microondasletal I can't comment on Wonka, but find it hard to believe anyone thought he was great in Dune. He probably will win an Oscar but looking at the history of that "award", It's clear it has very little to do with talent. His 15 minutes have past.
What a wonderfully pitch perfect response from Timoth Chalamet!! Just happens to be artistically and creatively correct too!! (Favorite element of the response: you make yourself as humble as the source material asks you to be." If only all the other claptrap we have on screen these days (Rings of Power I mean you!) felt that way.
Every single fucking actor answers like this. It's a canned question. Shut up.
I usually don't like actors who are teen or look teen (i know he is not teen, but he looks like a 18 year old), and although in the book the character is really young, I though an adaptation would need someone who looked older. Oh boy, I was mistaken. Although he is slim and doesn't look like much, he has such presence. Perfect choice. Dune 2 is a masterpiece. I don't think the Oscars mean much but I know it means something for the ones involved, and I hope they take lots of them. They deserve it. Haven't had such an experience in cinema since ROTK.
The scene at the last act were he spoke to the Fremen was incredible. I liked the casting because Paul is described as young and slim in the books, but I was sceptical if Chalamet could play the leader well, but holy hell he killed it!
I love all of the iterations.
Would you take spice?
@@buttchunksofdoomd4939 have and do lol
Villeneuve's version, I thought, was the perfect companion piece to Lynch's. I love both, and both compliment each other so well.
He's handsome and humble. As written!!!!
This movie was so good and I love the way they interpreted it from the book and Timothees performance just takes the whole thing he’s so amazing-
He was good, but I do not appreciate the race and gender swaps of characters. So much for ''respecting'' the source material.
@@j.langer5949 What race swaps?
@@megashark1013 Liet-Kynes, Chani, the Fremen, etc. They made Chani an ugly mulatto with a Californian accent and mannerisms.
@@j.langer5949literally only one swap and that’s Liet Kynes in part 1. And it was fine. Only thing it made complicated was the fact that in the book Chani was Kynes’s daughter, but the movie just seems to remove that plot point entirely.
@@josephphelan2725 Did you miss the Fremen? I'm sure Herbert didn't imagine the Fremen as sub-Saharan negroes.
Never read the books but as far as acting goes...Timothy f#cking nailed his role. Part 2 was so good that I think I'm selling it short when I tell people how good it is.
It's alright, I thought it had terrible pacing and skipped over a lot of stuff. It's missing a lot of context and explanation and just moves on too fast. It's just like: this happened and then this happened and then this happened and it's over now.
@@VikingKong. nah man the movies were beautifully dune
Funny how everyone trashed Lynch's Dune until some new Dune movies came out and they had to promote them then suddenly the performances are "iconic." Fair weather friends. I've always liked Lynch's Dune and I think his talent shows through in it even though it's not what he wanted it to be. He shouldn't sell himself short.
Say what you want about Lynch’s Dune, but as a 16 y.o. In 1984 when it came out-I was BLOWN AWAY! 😲
Even Lynch doesn't like that movie. There are good qualities about it, but it hasn't aged well, and was panned even when it came out. Timothee is specifically talking about the previous performance of Paul, not the whole movie.
Lynch doesnt like it because he didn't get his cut. @@OneAndZer0
@@OneAndZer0the flaws of the movie seem to be from studio interferance, lynch not having final cut, walking away from the project etc. Interestingly and more importantly, Frank Herbert, the author of the book, loved lynch's Dune, and in particular kyles version of Paul. Theres tons of interview footage of Frank Herbert praising this movie
I love the 1984 film. It is flawed but still great. It got me into Lynch's other films and Twin Peaks. Best parts of the film are the costumes and the music. Toto did a great job. Brian Eno too with the Prophecy Theme.
He's one of my favourite actors of this decade for sure. Humble, smart and talented. Look forward to the the Dune trilogy, possibly a Wonka sequel and all else he is in.
very well spoken
I wish both Dune movies had that amazing guitar solo from the 1984 movie. Zimmer did an astounding job as always, but I love the soundtrack from the original movie
Same!! But there is a guitar imbedded in the worm ride scene in the new one but its subtle
You mean Toto music ?
It was said that Lisan al Gaib would be humble!
I never bought Kyle McLochlin’s Paul. TC has really surprised me with his understated performance. I’ve seen the first film several times, and he is one of the best parts.
Lol I feel the exact opposite. I think Chalamet is terrible casting for Paul. Really hoping his performance in part 2 changes my mind.
@@DoctorSessWhat? Not even the Gom Jabbar scene convinced you?
@@killz4money no but this answer that he gave made me realize that he does respect the material at least. He even gave praise to the previous version which I actually like. I think Kyle McLochlin’s portrayal was great for that movie. Chalamet just hasn’t impressed me with his acting - though my familiarity with his work is admittedly limited. I feel the same way about Zendaya. I don’t think she’s a very convincing Chani (or actor in general). I just get a off putting vibe from both these actors. It feels too much like acting… it feels forced.
@@DoctorSesshave u seen part 2 yet? He has a bunch great scenes but there’s one towards the end thats just phenomenal and you can feel the power behind his words
Kyle's Paul makes sense to me. The stiffness, the formality of such a privileged and unusual life. There's so much fantastic stuff in Lynch's Dune, like the insolent-looking attendants of the guild navigator with their translation staffs. It's all so alien, just as required. Also all the intensely-ornamented decoration in the surroundings, the trappings of wealth in those cultures. It's hard to come at Villeneuve's Dune fresh. I read all the books decades ago. So it's hard to judge how it appears to someone new to it all. I'm enjoying it, but I guess the magic of the first experience of Dune can't be taken away.
Love Timothee, great actor

I don't know why people irrationally seem to hate this guy, I've been reading Dune since I was a young teen (in my 30s now)...I thought his portrayal of the character was spot on. I mean Paul isn't suppose to be a hero, he is an anti hero who is desperately trying not to become one but is forced ultimately to become what is essentially Space Muhammad. A warlord slaughtering the galaxy.
His version of Paul was the strongest in that sense of struggle I felt.

The still-suits in the Lynch film were one of the best works of costuming I have ever seen...on par with the Thing's practical special effects. However Lynch sort of missed the point and turned the book's false messiah theme into a retelling of Jesus with "taming the noble savages".

i liked the original actor better in terms of aesthetic but i think timothee fits better for the modern fans, paul was supposed to be conventionally attractive and charismatic man and on that part i think timothee and the prop / outfit department did a good job on it, as for acting the older dune was more of a stage theater performance while the modern one is a visual spectacle (for obvious limitations on what they could do in 84), can't say i saw any performance in the modern dune that would have ruined immersion which is good, the older one was great for its time but some of the performance comes off as goofy in modern days because of how mustache twirling and over the top it is
