  • The Maserati Grecale packs a mighty 330bhp in Modena form but is it really a true rival for the likes of the Porsche Macan and Alfa Romeo Stelvio?

So basically, if there's a problem with the screen, you're knackered. I just love the irony of not being allowed to use a mobile phone when driving but then car manufacturers make basic vehicle functions - that we used to control intuitively - menu driven on screens that are nowhere near as easy or safe to use.

Apparently to do with some bulls*** legislation (probably from the states) where some idiot has inadvertently pulled a paddle and crashed. New GranTurismo doesn’t have that feature at all even though same set up, as per Grecale filtering through now 😢

To be honest , i wish the suv thing would go out of fashion. Apart from the trident grill, it could be a Cayenne/Kia cross. Struggle to find it amongst the herd in the supermarket car park. Stick with my old gen 7 Celica. Get lots of positive comments too for a nearly 20 year old car. Bring back the Coupe. Great video though.

I used to agree. Then I bought an SUV. The ease of getting in and out compared to a 'normal car' let alone a Celica (I owned an 190vvt)! Is easy. The slightly higher riding position is nice. But obviously. SUVs are hardly the last thing in driving dynamics. But truthfully, how often are you experiencing that last ten percent of performance in a sporty car. I get it. But also get it 😮

@@markbrennan4693funny you should mention Cayman in an SUV/Crossover thread, because I have a 4.0 Boxster for my weekend thrills but absolutely love our Macan even though it’s only the 4cyl model - it’s such a brilliant all-rounder. The age of your Celica is making me think that you’re maybe stuck in the ‘90s with your assumptions regarding the handling deficiencies of SUVs - the current crop of “sporty” Crossovers are as far removed in their abilities from the early Merc ML’s and RAV4s as you’d find a new Cayman or GR86 would be to your Celica. Keep it as the “quirky fun classic” that it now is, but as a daily you won’t regret moving on…

Harry, I feel you, I have been a sucker for Maserati since the late 90s when I bought a biturbo, and drove from Boston to California and drive it daily for two years (!!). It never broke! I have owned several Ferrari’s since then (308, 355 spider, 365gtc) but the very late Merak SS I have now is the keeper, no hydraulics.
I should probably make a video on the Merak as I have stroked the engine to 3.3L and done some internal modifications (looks totally stock), but it has a bit over 300hp now at 7300rpm. It goes well. Very exciting car now. I call it the Merak R

Stellantis/FCA's 2.0L four cylinder seems to be a pretty solid unit! From what I understand, a Giulia Ti Sport is a sweet spot for that car, thanks to the lighter front end from that smaller engine. I've driven a few Jeep models with it, and it's a perfectly fine unit. That Giorgio platform underpins the Giulia, Stelvio, Grecale, Gran Turismo (M189), and Grand Cherokee WL. Lovely platform.

Two of my favourite cars of all time are the Ghibli and the Bora fro the late 60's's/70's, an era when 300+bhp meant at least 8 cylinders and big capacity with a decent soundtrack👍 It's interesting to see how modern tech is achieving high power from comparatively small engines while hitting ever tightening emission targets, even though they may lack character compared to their forbears. Big colour displays in cars are not my cup of tea I'm afraid and this particular genre of vehicle isn't one that interests me personally although this one does seem to offer a decent alternative for the money compared to the opposition.

Thanks for the review! It looks a lot like a Macan outside. And like a Macan, it's not trying to be a sports car. It's a practical 'sporty' SUV at the upper end of the segment. So in this day and age the four cylinder engine, that works well, is what is needed. Many people who buy this, or a Macan, will have another car, and that's quite likely to be a sports car. It's great Maserati have got this one right, I like them being around and offering something different!

Great review Harry. I don't really get the whole SUV thing. I understand the higher driving position to get a more commanding view, however, when everyone is driving one then that is neutralised. As for this Maserati, well the name conjures up a great motoring history, however, this SUV looks just like many others on the road today (Macan, CX6 / CX5, etc.). So it's no wonder Masarati feel the need to offer an option of having the name etched into the lights. If you were the owner you'd never find it in the supermarket car park.

Here in Canada, crossover vehicles are now the best sellers. When you have to deal with snow covered roads for several months out of the year, you appreciate the higher ground clearance. A couple of winters ago, a friend ripped the exhaust system off his BMW sedan on a road with impacted snow and ice. Then there's the usable space a crossover affords with 5 doors and a tall boot, great for dogs or whatever cargo you need to carry. Families love them.

Harry, nice review. I have also owned several Maseratis. After spending a week with the grecale modena I agree with your statement that it's missing a bit of that charisma. I just replaced my Quattroporte with a levante trofeo. The levante dispite not being a polished as the grecale still has that special sauce, not sure if it's the longer hood, frameless windows of sound of the 590hp Ferrari built v8. It was also way less than the grecale is I picked one up used. You should sample the trofeo products. They a quite different than the modena and GT trims... Love the channel btw.
