  • 8 Beware lest anyone cheat you through philosophy and empty deceit, according to the tradition of men, according to the basic principles of the world, and not according to Christ.
    9 For in Him dwells all the fullness of the Godhead bodily;
    10 and you are complete in Him, who is the head of all principality and power.
    (Collosians 2:8-10 NKJ)

    Orthodoxy is not a religion, it's the revelation of God to mankind

    Father Hopko's advice to "show up in Church every Sunday, and stand there and pay attention without criticism" is interesting. It can be hard to pay attention to something without criticizing it. Also criticism can be a direct byproduct of a real, active engagement. This is the faith after all of Jacob, who wrestled with God and came away limping. Would it have been better for him to not have "thrown down" with the divine? All I want to say here is criticism is important. Doubt is a part of faith, fighting is a part of wanting to live, and the opposite of love is not hate but indifference.

    5:46 so correct. Let me give a verse, "Spirit of the Man is the Lamp of the Lord."

    Many American Orthodox priests, especially those from Greek and Antiochian jurisdictions, wear the collar out in public.

      not a good translation..... that word should be translated as "piety", definitely not "religion" (ευσέβεια)

    From a Judaistic point of view this isn't correct ,in Genesis it is we ,it was very much like the term mysterium tremendis undefined unknown, it only later became defined but still is projected the self and ultimate object ,the beyond is beyond it cannot be defined. Where I agree is Jesus fulfills all religions.

    News flash being Christian isn't what makes one Spiritual. Only Christians can relate to Jesus being put on that cross guys. the ego of some of these Religious people and mind set make me cringe. Christian mentality "hey guys the world is falling apart should we like do something about it".........."nah wait for the rapture Jesus will do the work for us". The kind of people that would watch you house on fire with you inside and stand there doing nothing

      Loosey goosey new age feel good individualistic spirituality has contributed greatly to the decline of Western civilization; good old fashioned faith is what made it great. Nothing more more inspiring than seeing people united in their religious community and standing firm in the ancient faith and traditions. Nothing makes me cringe like decadent new agers working on the dissolution of their ego all the while completely absorbed into their self directed, self centered, personalized spiritual path with all the associated commercialized clutter. Their disgusting arrogance and veiled sense of superiority adds a nice thick layer of slime that makes them all the more repulsive.

      @Evelyn Choy Spirituality could be defined as a connection with the transcendent, that which is beyond ones petty and personal desires. The practitioner is brought into contact with something that is larger themselves, such as the eternal teachings, rituals, and moral guidance of the Holy Church. Christians are still encouraged to have a private and personal relationship with God. Also, this does not remove the possibility of personal pursuits, or philosophical speculations from the individual; those are things of a separate realm.
      Your attribution of the greatness of Western Civilization to secular humanism is absurd. In case you haven't noticed Western Civilization is in a sharp decline, from which it will not likely recover. This downward trend has its roots in the later part of the 20th century when academics initiated a movement to severe Western culture from its Christian roots and abolish traditional morality and cultural traditions. In place of the church was the state with its philosophy of moral and cultural relativism. The West embraced a culture of "lifestyle values" that was devoid of transcendent truth and gave every individual the option to adopt whatever belief system was convenient to them and modify it to their liking. All sense of personal duty and obligation to our communities has since evaporated. You will notice that this abrupt irreversible decline corresponds exactly to the emergence of the philosophies that you laud.
      You have simply parroted culturally marxist propaganda with your assertion that religion has stifled Western progress. In fact, the exact opposite is true; Christendom is the greatness of Western Civilization and Western Civilization has been great only for so long as it has been the heart of Christendom. Scientists, like Newton, discovered the laws of nature only because of their firm belief that there was a divine lawmaker who authored those laws. Tour any museum that contains the artifacts of European Civilization and you will find centuries of master works, and see that almost all of that magnificence in art, architecture, sculpture, literature, and music was inspired by God. On the other hand, we can thank secularism for the proliferation of trashy modern art, obscenity, and soulless modern architecture.
