So emotionally realistic, Bancroft and Duke never made a false move. Seen this film a number of times; one of the films I revisits from time to time. I first seen it when it made it's debut on TV about 2 years or so after the release,it was a big deal,I was maybe 12 or13 or maybe younger . And even at that age I was touched (Also by To Kill a Mockingbird with Greory Peck as the great and honorable Mr. Attcus Finch)Since then. I've looked at it through a more mature eye, and I'm still at awe with their performances, looking for a false note. If anything, I'm even more impressed, timeless, this film made me a Anne Bancroft fan for life (such an earthy and beautiful woman the kind I go for) Duke should have been a star, her talents were immense. A great film with a great score and cinematoghaphy, and two of the greatest performances ever in cinema. A masterwork in film acting,some performances don't translate well on the screen, never seen it on Broadway, (of course) but I can't imagine it being better, maybe the aura of live theater but not the performances. The Academy got it right with both actors. Davis flat-out got beat.

I have to agree with the poster who said that Patty Duke did a much better job than Melissa Gilbert. I truly do not think that this is a movie that should have been attempted, again. Patty Duke's performance is phenomenal, never to be duplicated, no matter who may try. It is just one of those things that simply can't be improved upon, it is perfect the way it is. In other words,as the adage goes..."if it isn't broke, don't fix it".
If you notice..Melissa Gilbert shares similar looks as Patty Dukes has...so they really didn't go to far outside the model Patty Duke created and stamped as how it would be cast for all time.

The little mixed race girl (half hispanic I assume) who plays Helen in the 1990s Disney remake of this story does very good job, too. Her acting isn't as explosively energetic as Duke's but she does very good impression as 8yo deafblind child
You need to visit Tuscumbia Alabama each Summer when THE MIRACLE WORKER is performed live behind Ivy Green, the home Helen grew up in, The pump is still there and the show is top notch.
OMG... i cry everytime i see this scene, don't know why, but i guess the love and longing that the parents show for wanting to connect with their child, and the discovery of a breakthrough are so emotional, the music, and everything about it draws something out of me everytime, i needed to see this,, thank you

Finally when they're at the pump, Annie spells out water in Helen's hands again and again, when Helen gets the idea. Then she starts to understand that the weird motions in her hands are names, and she gets excited. Helen is still blind and deaf, but she can now communicate through signing in someone's hands.

Although people think that she didn't communicate with other people, she actually had developed over 60 "homesigns" for familiar people and things in her life. They had black housemaid/cook who had daughter only two years older than Helen, and the maid's daughter had learnt to understand most of Helen's domestic signs as the girls spent a lot of time together (which was unusual in post-slavery era, to let the daughter of the house to play with hired help's children)

As much as I love Bette Davis, there was no way she could or should have won the Best Actress Oscar over Anne Bancroft that year, especially for a campy semi-flop like "Whatever Happened To Baby Jane?" (The whole scenario about Blanche being held prisoner in the house by Jane made no sense. She could have had the housekeeper take her out of there any time, she controlled all the financial resources, and why in Hell was she throwing notes out to the neighbor when she just needed to call out from the window?) Anne deserved that Oscar, and of course, so did Patty.

My only problem with youtube so far is that I could find almost nothing from Helen Keller herself. This is archive footage out there, and people should really see that. It is a shame that there are so many people out there that are so horrid to people who are just as great as them, if not greater. Boy did she ever! Patty Duke's outstanding, emotionally charged, every-moment-gripping performance, in one of the finest movies ever made, was leeeagues above and beyond Gilbert's--to me somehow fake, and never believable--rendering. I was left wondering "Whyy..whyyy did they choose her?!"
Today, she would be in jail because of abuse. Time is abuse and get with reality; we have a very strong work ethic in this country, and time to get back and time for truth. The Psycho-Babble is over.

If you love this story, there is also a movie that is a twin in some ways to this story called Black. The incredible acting aside by 15 year old Patti Duke & Anne Bancroft, what made it the masterpiece it is was that it was a true story.

A beautiful human story, superb performances, a fabulous score, impeccable cinematography and a great director. Who could ask for anything more.

Completely agree. Melissa did a lot of unrealistic flailing about. With Patty you believe she really is blind and deaf.
