    Growing up on a south central Minnesota farm my dad never had the luxury of manuals. If it needed work the local dealer would bring a tractor to use while repairs were being done. That was a great service. When I started working on tractors for restoration I would get the best possible manuals. IH of course. Jensales was started real close to where I grew up. My dad went to school with founder. They save a lot of time. Of course, the internet is also very good. Pete always puts enough information to help with repairs. That is always great. He is methodical and never seems to get upset. Thanks Pete.

    I have a Farmall M that needs a little work done to it. Last time it started, ran for 15 seconds, and it quit. We are thinking of replacing the battery terminal (corrosion). And maybe the plugs and plug wires (age). Maybe it'll run better that it was. Sometimes when we throttled up it would sound like it was dying then roar back at the higher set RPM. However that sounds like a timing issue.

    • @rhekman
      @rhekman Před 2 lety +3

      For those symptoms, I'd start with the easy stuff - air, fuel, spark.
      1. Clean the points & lightly grease the vacuum advance. Check the button, rotor, & contacts on the distributor cap while you're there. Spark advance that doesn't respond to the governor, or doesn't provide hot enough spark could cause sputtering under throttle changes.
      2. Clean the carburetor, making sure none of the needle jets are clogged, packing nuts don't leak, float still floats, and governor actuator moves. If one of the air or fuel circuits isn't metering correctly, your engine could be running lean or flooding when you throttle up.
      3. Check the air cleaner, making sure there's no water in the bottom of the cup, and the fluid level is not over full. Also check for good fuel flow out of the sediment bowl below the fuel tank.

    • @rhekman
      @rhekman Před 2 lety +1

      @@jimputnam2044 That was my first thought as well. An engine that's easy to start, but doesn't stay running very long doesn't sound like a charging system issue. But the fuel system would be definitely need looking at.
