It is shocking the total amount that he ended up donating to the city.. but I am relieved that the house still survives to this day. It breaks my heart, how many of these structures were torn down...
And that mansion is every bit a great work of art as any painting inside that museum or any other!
I LOVE the Frick Museum. The house is as much of a draw as the artwork within. The 2nd floor isn't open to the public, so thanks for this view.
Born and raised in Upper West Side of Manhattan. It is absolutely gorgeous. If you visit Manhattan it is a must go.
When I worked in Manhattan in my youth, I had to get to work from the Bronx on the Express Buses.
My bus traveled down Fifth Avenue.
I made it a point to sit on the left-hand side at the window. I loved seeing the remnants of repurposed homes from the Gilded Age.
I never knew the story of this most grand home I’d pass each morning, five days a week.
It was my favorite of all the Grand-Dames of Fifth Avenue.
It’s one of a kind on Fifth.
There are NO huge front lawns anywhere else.

I have gone to The Frick for decades and it is simply an amazing experience that one must have. Early and off days are the best when one can truly feel like you are a guest in the house.

I've been to the Frick Museum the last time I was in NYC, wonderful display of art and architecture. Good gesture on Frick's part to bless NY and the world in this way.
Please don't laugh but I haven't been to New York City, so I did not know that the Frick museum was his home. Imagine my surprise at the end of the video to find it is still there. What a wonderful series Ken!!! Thank you for taking the time to make these mini documentaries.
Anyone who laughs at you -you should ignore. It's wonderful that you have found this and I hope you get to NYC at some point..even for a day or two to do a non-stop museum run. It is amazing that it exists - so many have been lost. I actually prefer the house to his art collection on display. I grew up in museums - this was one of them. I was lucky that way. Glad you are here Tim.

@Tim Schultz no one will laugh at you, you can’t be everywhere 😊 I’ve been fortunate enough to visit the mansion twice, I try to make it a rule whenever I get to NYC, it is absolutely amazing and the extended family were still involved in its management last time I was there. It truly has been preserved as a ‘family home’ which is incredible by itself, but the artworks, objects collections & location opposite Central Park are amazing. It really is a life/travel experience. If you get the chance to visit NYC, please do yourself a favour & visit, it’ll be worth the effort! Cheers from Australia 🇦🇺

My favorite mansion of the USA so far. I thought this particular house was actually very beautiful, and well thought out and designed to eventually allow the public to enjoy the gobsmackedly amazing art collection. I know that I'm getting old when I can remember when both this and the Isabella Stewart Gardner mansions/museums were free! There's one more "Frick" mansion - the one that he gave to his son Childs on Long Island (also called Clayton and now the Nassau Museum of Art). Excellent video. I'm looking forward to seeing the renovations to this museum.
@Louis, Isabella’s mansion is spectacular, fully air conditioned with an elevator specifically designed to transport her to her suite on the top floor ❤ The works of art are magnificent, if I hadn’t visited the Frick Collection in NYC, I probably wouldn’t have stumbled over Isabella’s! Truly beautiful & so worth the visit! 🇦🇺💕

Wow, it looks like it was designed as a museum from the beginning. Vast, impersonal spaces, and not a trace of individuality. Still impressive, I suppose that was the sole intention.

It’s one of my favorite art museums in New York. One of my favorite art museums period.
Henry certainly proved himself to be a POS but that was one sweet house. I believe it was my favorite. Altho I found humor in the house that was built diametrically opposed to how Frick wanted it. But that's an architect for you!

Never having visited the 1st and 2d mansions, I have no basis for comparison. However, I have made it a practice to visit the 3d ("The Frick", as art lovers call it affectionately) whenever in NYC, to admire the magnificent artworks housed there. I appreciated seeing your images of some of the interior as it looked in Frick's day. Thanks.
Love this series! But I would have love to see the servants quarters too! See if he treated them better than he did most people not as wealthy as he was. Thanks so much for sharing this and all the houses you do! 🥰🥰

The last one finally has some clarity.
Maybe others have mentioned this, but the building is currently closed while significant renovations take place. The project has been controversial (New York, after all) but the final plans shouldn't change the overall appearance too much. It is currently expected to reopen next year. Until then much of the art collection can be seen at the Frick Madison, in the onetime Whitney Museum building.

Visited the Frick many many many years ago. 1980s early.
Clayton in Pittsburgh East End is my favorite. Growing up 50 miles NE of Pittsburgh in Armstrong County our family and school would visit Carnegie Museum and other exhibit spaces. The Frick Museum not far from Clayton is a very interesting exhibit of many things. Paintings, automobiles, carriages, clothing and more. Frick Museum is an interesting place to explore and take your time.
Wow, that really is magnificent. Love the Fragonard room, the staircase, and Henry's bedroom, and of course every staircase landing should have a fireplace with a marble mantelpiece, and marble columns. I know mine has, haha not really.
I'm not ever likely to go to New York, but if I did, I think this would be the first place I'd visit.
My favourite is the one others have mentioned not in these videos, Clayton. Love the dark wood panelling and staircase.

Hi Ken, absolutely love your channel and watch almost daily. I wondered aboutbthe covering of the windows and doors with this particular home in New York City. I think it would be facinating to talk about the obvious and many design elements that secured this home and the safety of the family since it was so close to the sidewalks. Also the tall townhome behind across the alley has something covering the first two stories and to find out about that sort of thing as well.
Of Frick mansions this one is my favorite. I liked all three of the bedrooms that were used by the Frick family and of those three I like Helen's best. It's the least elaborate and has a friendly, homey quality.
it's awesome, I've been too this & his Pittsburgh mansion & property, just wow.
My favorite of the 3 is the first one. It's sad the 2nd one was destroyed.

I have visited a number of times since I was a kid. And this palace / residence/ museum is wonderful.
Seattle also has a Frick Museum. I wonder the connection. I liked Eagle Rock best mostly because of the gardens and lawns... But I wouldn't say no to this one!

Very complicated legacy, Henry Clay Frick. On the one hand, a pure capitalist in the most evil sense; on the other hand, his donation of his estate to NYC has given the city one of its most beautiful museums, as well as preserving arguably the most important gilded age mansion in the city in perpetuity.
I always find it interesting that Frick's mansions currently exist, but Carnegie's are largely demolished (except for NYC).
Small correction on your very interesting video about this fabulous mansion. The vestibule and garden court were also not part of the orginal mansion as constructed in the 1910's. They were just like the Oval room, the East gallery and Music room added by Pope as part of the conversion and enlargement of the mansion to become a museum in the 1930's.
I remember years ago the tour guide told us at night Frick sat on the sofa by the fringed lamp waiting for Helen to come home.
I spent the 2020 lockdown walking every afternoon in Central Park and parked my car next to the Fricks house.
Back in 1963, Marvel Comics artist Jack Kirby used the Frick Museum as the model for Avengers Mansion.

It’s hard to determine the square footage of these demolished homes. I would estimate the sq footage to be around 50,000

In all honesty, these ppl didn’t get to where they were by being, “nice”.

The mansion itself looks so cavernous inside…it looked like a government building on the interior….i dont see how anyone could live there, especially with a small family…
