  • Saturday the 27th July would see the Dean Forest Railway welcoming their first mainline railtour onto the branch since 2019. Hosted by UK Railtours, the tour included traction hauled by 33012/ D6515 with London Transport 4TC 438. It was great to see the railway use its mainline connection again for revenue earning use. Let's hope it continues!! Thanks for watching.

The 4TC units were the sets which were at the Bournemouth end of the Waterloo-Southampton-Bournemouth-Weymouth services introduced with electrification to Bournemouth in 1967. They were detached from the rest of the train at Bournemouth Central and hauled by Class 33s to Weymouth and back (pulled there and pushed back). Did they have electric motors and shoes to pick up current or were they propelled by the powered units? The 4TC shown here doesn't have any pick-up shoes; see 1:37 to 1:52 where the bogies are filmed as the train leaves the Gloucester-Severn Tunnel Junction line.

@@marc21091 The 4TC sets were completely unpowered and were actually converted from normal MK1 carriages. They were propelled from Waterloo to Bournemouth by a 4REP unit which was detached there with a class 33/1 being attached to the front to take the (usually two) TC sets on to Weymouth. The reverse happened on the return journey.
It was a very slick operation which I witnessed a few times at Bournemouth Central.

Has the preserved railway always been connected with the mainline at Lydney Junction? Thanks

I believe it has, as it was a BR branch at some point.

Has the TC set got CDL which I thought was a regulatory requirement for main line stock? Thanks for posting.
