Strahm believes he has finally caught Hoffman, but the door to the room suddenly shuts itself and the walls begin to close in as the box is lowered beneath the floor. Strahm finishes playing the tape, which warns him that if he does not enter the box, he will die and be framed as Jigsaw's apprentice. Safe inside the box, Hoffman watches as Strahm unsuccessfully tries to escape the room and is ultimately crushed to death.

that's actually one of the most terrifying deaths in the franchise IMO. being crushed to death has to be one of the most painful ways of going out

Compared to the other deaths in the saw series, you're getting off easy if you're getting cushed to death

I am completly Whit you this death IS brutal, and people dont realized how painfull It IS, the first parte would be the light one, yeah light. Lets imagine you do exactly as straham did, the felling if your left arm bone cracking and afterwards breaking your skin to be pulles out, after the felling of being pruesured to a position you fell very uncomfortable Whit plus the coldness of bleeding out, then the breaking of your neck plus SOME Bones like ribs, this would stab you in vital organs and parts like the head would slowly feel more compresión making you nausty as heck and Whit a Big pain, eventually the presión would be so much your head would start cracking and you would feel It, most of your Bones and ligaments are Broken but as your brain and heart are still almost intacto you are still alive slowly felling how the presión IS to much until you pass out from the pain and die whitout noticing pr felling every organ of yours Crush.
Scott Patterson wanted this to look as real as possible so they actually crushed him to death in the compactor. He is given a post credits memorandum. A credit to the craft!

Notice how the Glass Box is designed to look like another drowning trap with the two tubes connected at the top.
Only this time Strahm's whole body would be underwater instead of just his head.
Peter Strahm definitely wouldn't want to get in the box because there's no way he could perform another tracheotomy when his entire body is submerged underwater.
Of course, it's a trick and turns out not to be another drowning trap, it's honestly a well-thought-out mind game by Hoffman.
Originally he was supposed to drown in this room instead of being crushed so it adds up

Saw 5 is very underrated with a badass ending. I would say I hope they make the whole franchise in 4k.
But also wasted, because he could have just waited at the door with the tape and survive.
It was damn boring the entire movie, my least favorite of the franchise, only the ending was good.

Hoffman had a great voice. You hear it in the Saw X trailer.
In a way Strahm beat him in the end. He left his hand behind, which led cocky Hoffman to use it to leave fingerprints at the crimes, and determining those prints were made postmortem was a key point in implicating Hoffman.
That and in the Saw VI post credits scene, Amanda tells Jeff's daughter, Corbett, " do not to trust the man who saves you" so im assuming she told Agent Perez that it was Hoffman.

Hoffman wouldn't just let him live. Even if he heard the whole tape and got into the coffin, Hoffman could just press another button that changes the whole purpose of the trap.
The coffin would stay in place and water would start flowing through the tubes. With no way to perform the tracheotomy seen at the beginning, he would drown.
It was either being crushed to death or drowned. The ONLY way to survive is with Hoffman knocked out and Strahm inside the coffin. That way the trap would play out as intended and Hoffman would be the one turned into paste.
I never thought of it that way
Hoffman counted on revenge. If Strahm did this logically he would have survived. But no, he had to put Hoffman in there.

The 5 victims traps in this one were kinda boring aside from the Saw Blade Trap at the end. What made this movie great was how they went back to show how Hoffman came to become the accomplice and how Strahm figured it all out.
I honestly didn't like 6 or 7 that much, they kinda seemed random to me, like they had really no where else to go and just needed to bring in more characters and reasons for John to wanna have them tested. Although bring back Erickson and Perez, especially Erickson's death, and the Shotgun trap was pretty cool.
Due to changes in plot and Hoffman as killer plus this dark twisted ending yes I would say it’s one of the better installments

He was too close to the case and hot-headed/emotional. It’s a small mistake but that’s enough to get you pressed by a machine in a Saw movie 😂
2 things
1. There had to be SOME WAY of going behind (you had to think quickly) the mechanism and blocking the gears if ONLY to cause hoffman to die too… best case scenario, he has to evac and now you got a gun on em.
2. From now on, if you ever walk up into a room with crevice walls and no other items than a gear style coffin..you know…
He probably thought the box was a trap itself, something you’d let locked away in and buried, like a casket
I remember playing "Half Life" and found myself in the same scenario. Even though it was a game, the horror of being crushed like that is undescribeable. Best ending in the series. saw 1 comes second with its ending.
It's funny because that chapter reminded me of this ending.

Seriously. Sometimes I get high when watching the Saw traps and it feels like I’m actually in them experiencing the pain and it’s horrifying and terrifying. I remember watching the furnace trap from Saw II and also this trap whilst high and it was specifically at 2:32 and 2:40 that I really understood and FELT how scary this is. The camera keeps going outside the room so it’s hard to feel like you’re getting crushed too as the viewer but imagine being in the room at that point. Trapped on all axis as the walls close in with barely any room to breathe KNOWING that you’re going to be crushed to death.

This is so messed up. It has to be one of the worst deaths in the entire series. Can you imagine how painful this would be? 2:32 - 🤮 Let's say Strahm got in the box. Hoffman would have killed him later anyway most likely. There's no chance he was going to let him go with Strahm knowing what he did. Despite that, it still would have been better than dying like this.
Hoffman is going to burn in Hell for this. I wouldn't wish such a horrible death on my own worst enemy.
Actually Hoffman would’ve died in the room and Straum would’ve survived, per rules of the game. This was Straum’s chance to expose everyone and be victorious but Hoffman anticipated Straum’s hatred would blind him even if only for a moment. Straum simply had to understand his place in the Jigsaw game and play it through but he saw himself as superior and even in his last moments tried to outsmart the trap, Jigsaw and Hoffman.

@@kigrey3994 ... no, this wasn't a game, it was Hoffman's way to get Strahm out of his way while also turning him in to "jigsaw's apprentice", that being the reason why he framed Strahm in the first place, because he knew that no matter what he would have died before he could do anything about that.
I feel Strahm would not have survived even if he was in the coffin.

Idk how it could’ve been done, but I always though the only way here would’ve been to somehow stop Hoffman’s box from going down. Maybe if he shot or jammed the gears it would either stop the press or at least kill Hoffman too.
This was a Jigsaw trap not a Hoffman trap. It was shown in Saw IV of John constructing it. Hoffman himself didn’t know how it worked and if Strahm were to enter the glass coffin, Hoffman would’ve been crushed

no, in the scenario that Strahm entered the coffin, as soon as he get's to the other room he would be facing Hoffman with a gun pointed at him more than likely, this wasn't a winnable trap, Strahm was going to die no matter what he did once he went in that room, that was the whole point on Hoffman incriminating him.
wonder what would have happen if he put the gun at the coffin gears and probably made it stop rotating which stopping the coffin from descending
Probably like what happened when Rigg tried shooting the gears to stop the machine from Scalping the Blonde girl Brenda in the film earlier (Saw IV) they would probably just start up again after a few seconds. But its a good thought tho, may have even worked.

I can already think of a few films that did this before, the 13 Ghosts remake from 2001 for example.
There’s probably a film version of The Pit and the Pendulum out there that ends on a more depressing note as well.
However, this is more than likely the most graphic (I mean, how does it get much worse?) depiction of a wall crushing on film, and probably the most iconic.

That would've been interesting and probably carried a few more movies. Strahm can't go back to the police because he can't prove Hoffman framed him so he'd probably be forced to join him for a while and play along until he finds a way to kill or arrest Hoffman.

And to anyone asking how can I say in my previous comment Hoffman may have not planned it, I say that because why would Hoffman bother fighting Strahm instead of just getting into the box himself and not bother even getting into a fight with Strahm. He could have maybe swung at Strahm but missed on purpose and didn't have to worry about getting head butted. Idk maybe it's just me. Unless he really wanted Strahm to feel like he had him through and through and then taunt him at the end that's possible as well. Idk. Please tell me if I'm crazy here.🤔

I think that was the ending I saw when I was a preteen. I remember that me and my mother were coming to a house of my sister's friend to pick her up and when we arrived the movie was ending. I never knew exactly what movie was except that it was from the Saw franchise.
To be honest wouldn’t strahm be doomed either way if he did get in the coffin and survived and Hoffman let’s say dies strahm would be arrested.
If strahm gets in the coffin and Hoffman also survives Strahm would be also arrested Hoffman acting the victim? Cause Strahm is already a suspect.

His scream that split second right before the bone pops out made the scene much more realistic. Glad thy didn't just decide to make it where he yells when the bone pops out, that shot would of hurt the minute his arm got pinned for sure.

Ok for me this scene is the reason why Saw V is my least favorite. Strahm just fucking up royally here, as he remembers by not listening to the tapes and doing what they say nearly got him killed the first time, but instead of doing it he was all "MeH fUcK yOu!" Then it is even more frustrating is his desperate attempts to find a way out, to the point he got himself awkwardly stuck in a way that is prolonged instead of standing a certain way to make it quicker or saving one bullet for him.
Had Strahm been smart as he was throughout most of the films he would give the Hoffanator the one-two fuck you to the face and throw him to the floor, not in the box. Just such a frustrating move.
As smart as he was he literally had about 10-20 seconds to find an escape. He tried everything he could within that timeframe. Hoffman was just smarter.
I mean can you really blame him for not getting in the coffin? He already survived the water box trap earlier on. He then walks into a room and sees a coffin full of broken glass and 2 tubes attached to it, instantly he's gonna think it's a trap, anyone in his situation would think the same too. Had he gotten into it the chances are it would quickly fill with water, drowning him, and this time there's no way out of it unlike the box trap where he got lucky with the pen.
As for him not throwing Hoffman to the floor, why would he do that? Hoffman isn't gonna just stay there and surrender, he's gonna fight back, he could've had a knife on him which he could've used against him. Strahm threw him into the coffin because he thought it was a trap and that Hoffman would've gotten killed instead of him.
Why is him desperately attempting to find a way out frustrating for you? He was panicking and the walls were getting closer, anyone in his situation would be the same. Should he have shot himself? Yes, obviously he should've, but Strahm just had too much pride.
Because every trap this episode killed you regardless of completion. Strahm thought the tape was lying for this room too. Plus those walls were so discreet, there’s no way someone would’ve known they would close like that

John did tell the insurance guy that money wasn't a concern. It was the principal of the matter. He could afford treatment, but the point of an insurance plan is to reduce the cost.
I wanted more graphic footage of him being crushed between the walls... intestines bursting out from abdomen, skull splitting open and brains popping out etc... that sort of detail.
I would have placed the gun right on the edge where the glass box was dropping. Hopefully that would have stopped it from dropping just enough to create pressure on the walls from both sides.
Most impactful saw ending. Only character I was super attached to died not being the hero… well played
I think more blood would’ve been shed at 2:36, or the scene would’ve been replaced where blood would explode every where as the walls completely crushed him

I feel like he should of just kept shooting at the top of the cage to make a hole or something to bust through..
a small hole in the grid wouldnt get you outta there. it looked like there was some hydraulics on top maybe he could have landed a shot there

As someone who has been in a trap before, he had jacket, pistol, player. Jam it in the gears for the box and the box would stop the walls closing in. Or the other guy would stop with walls, because if the box was weak, he'd die too. Or at least, he'd kill the killer. After Saw 1, every plot is so weak.

I’m saying this JUST TO BE TRUE ABOUT “SAW 5” STORRYY… & SAWS FUTURE with “KILLING OFF” if they kept characters like Perry (Strahm, Perez Eric, or his son. BRENT and even PAMELA Jenkins. Saw X (which is after Spiral…) would have a good storyline. If all those ppl got back together or some stuff. On a mission of being reminded of the reboot legacy of John Kramer. Grouping together to FIGHT IT! The previous ones moved a slow pace, (I, II, III, IV) see why they were golden and 5 wasn’t?…
