    Hey, Ryan. USAF veteran here, and former member of the 1st S.O.W. (Special Operations Wing), the original parent wing for all Air Force spec. ops.
    I was an Aircraft Maintenance Technician in the 20th A.M.U. (Aircraft Maintenance Unit) as of September of 1982, as a Crew Chief on MH-53H Pavelow III, Super Jolly Green Giant helicopters.
    At that time, at Hurlburt Fld AFB (then Elgin AFB Auxiliary Field #9), we had the AC-130H Gunships, assigned to the 16th S.O.S., Spectre. Their nickname (for the unit as a whole) was the Ghost Riders, and the unit patch pictured the Grim Reaper, holding the acft's 20mm rotating cannon being fired.
    On the old "H" models, their weapons included twin 20mm rotating cannon, just aft of the fwd personnel door (which was actually filled with scanning tech), a 40mm Bofors, and 105mm Howitzer, just aft of the wing.
    There were no externally mounted weapons back then, but they did have external flare and chaffe dispensers to confound heat-seeking and radar-guided missiles, a large, polycarbonate "fish bowl" installed in the overhead door of the ramp for the I.O. (Incoming Officer) to watch for incoming projectiles (anti-aircraft missiles and artillery). It also sported 4 "bathtubs", specifically designed heat shields which caused the hot engine exhaust to better mix with the cold air at 10,000 ft (their nominal operating altitude).
    The sensor suite was comprised of wide & narrow angle TVs, FLIR (pronounced , or Forward-Looking [a bit of a misnomer] InfraRed, low-light TV (also called night vision), and various radars.
    In 1982, when I joined the Wing, a well-trained gunship crew could put a 105 round, in your lap, as you were driving down the road, at 50mph, from 10,000 ft, on a starless night.
    I hope you found this intel useful (if a bit dated), and that you'll do videos on the other aircraft and units of the 1st S.O.W.
    Footnote: The gunships tend to operate only in regions where we DOMINATE the airspace, but even then, the F-22 & 35 will be nearby for support & protection of these powerful warbirds.

    I believe the aircraft that would have been providing air support to ground troops in Afghanistan for the bulk of the war would have been the older model AC-130U and or AC-130W. Both of those have now been retired. This video is about the AC-130J, which, evidently, took over the close air support mission in 2019.
    God bless America that we have so many death-from-the-sky machines, that we can’t keep track of them all.

    This is the new version, 2019 is when they replaced the existing versions in operation.
    They keep the 105 Howitzer, they drop the 40mm Bofors completely, they replace the 20mm gatling gun with a 30mm autocannon, and add bombs and missiles.
    Overall they loose some rapid fire and area suppression, in exchange for a more precise and harder punch.

      @@77marioland AC47 started it. Then came the AC 130. Then the AC 119. 47s had miniguns, 130s had the vulcan and miniguns, 119 just had vulcans or miniguns. That was all during Nam. Basically they found they needed more then what the 47 could carry so they went with the 130. The 130 proved too successful in interdicting the Ho Chi Minh trail so they weren't as available for close in air support so they retrofitted some of the 119s to supplement them. Project Gunship was a crazy program.

    AC-130 has been around for decades going back to 1975, they replaced the AC-47 starting in 1965 which was used in Vietnam, only has weapons on one side so it can do a rotation around the target with the side angled down. The J veriant has only 1 30mm Auto-Cannon and 1 105mm Howitzer, the J model is rather new, the upgraded version only coming out in 2018.
    Those glide bombs increases the effective reach of the AC-130 from 5-10miles all the way out to 40miles.
    The C-130 default is 4 rotor props, its designed for short take off in rough terrian. :p Almost never said is the C-130 is nearly as old as the B-52, just 1yr younger.

    One version of the AC-130 back in the late 1980s and early 1990's was armed with 3 M-61 Vulcan cannon, the 40mm Bofors, and the 105mm howitzer. It was capable of blanketing a football field with 20mm fire in less than 1 minute with the rounds inpacting no farther than 6 inches (15cm) apart. The M-61 Vulcan cannon fires at 6,000 rounds per minute or 100 rounds per second. Imagine 3 of these shooting at you at the same time.

    @jaycooper2812 Před měsícem

    Each engine is a 5,400 (AC-130J) shaft horsepower turbine engine for a total of 21,600 horsepower driving 4 six blade propellers giving the aircraft a top speed of 416 miles per hour or 365 knots, and a range of 3,000 miles unrefueled.

  • @jaycooper2812
    @jaycooper2812 Před měsícem

    All of the weapons fire out of the left side of the aircraft. This is so the aircraft can accurately fire it's weapons while circling the target. I actually like the older versions of the AC-130 the older version has the 105mm, the 40mm, and 2 25mm gatling guns.
    The current version of the AC-130 replaced an earlier version in 2017. There have been 6 previous versions of the AC-130 and the concept dates back to the Vietnam War when the original gunship was a modified DC-3 called "Puff the Magic Dragon" and carried 3 7.62mm gatling guns firing 6,000 rounds each.
    There was a versions that carried 2 M-61 Vulcan 20mm gatling guns, a 40 mm Bofors, and the 105mm cannon. Another version carried 2 25mm gatling guns, a 40mm Bofors, and the 105mm.
    The current version carries a 30mm cannon, the 105mm, and various missiles, (Hellfire, Javelin, and aim-92 Stinger) and the new JDAM small diameter bomb.

    The AC130 has flown since Nam. I think what your issue is some confusion over the other models. Live near one of their bases in WV. Yeager and the WV National Guard operates an airlift squadron of C130s. Traditionally 4 props per engine but you may notice on the J a shift to 6. A mod that previously was assigned to a FL unit for storm chasing and flying into Hurricanes. The J is making that mod a standard Item. While not an expert on all the models, with a listing I can point out tells to narrow to a couple. Don't see them much any more but I think 2 models could be ID'ed from a X antennae set on the tail rudder.

    The Spector was first then the spooky and then the ghost rider all up grade to the previous one. The ghost rider was 100% purpose built as a gun ship not through some big guns on a cargo plane.

    I think your timeline confusion is due to understanding of our Model, version and block upgrade system for vernacular. It’s easier for me when I compare it to software naming conventions, V-1.1.1 = AC130-J-40. Service timelines overlap significantly as they are often upgrades to the air frame and system not new birds
