Gosh this really took me back. I am about to do a talk for my local history society on the history you can find in the town's pavements, and I wanted to credit this series. What makes this especially poignant is that not only do I remember a lot of this but also (probably not unconnected) it was mostly filmed a few miles from where I grew up and the Leeds Liverpool canal went through our village. I can remember looking for the rope marks on the canal bridges near me and the fixings for the rollers - I was probably about 8 or 9 at the time
Lots of history recorded in this great programme. Over the end titles is the viaduct from ICI Nobels Explosives works which took narrow gauge trains of gunpowder to exchange sidings at Gathurst.
@@ADCTVCollection There is the Granada logo at the start and with the Granada frontcaps seem to have the copyright line on mid 1970s Granada Schools programmes
@@ADCTVCollection Might have been a ITV Schools on Channel 4 screening from around 1988 to 1992 which might not have had a Granada logo at the start given that History Around You was a Summer Term only series
One of my favourite programmes. Thanks very much for posting. It brings back memories
You're very welcome!
Towards the end of the film the lock keeper grooming the horse is my old mate Derek Bent. We worked the l&l short boat Weaver together.
Allan Waplington was my history teacher at senior school. The only man apart from my father i have respected. Fantastic bloke great role model
Whole heap of misandry going on there..

Fascinating. Shame there’s no clock though!
Unfortunately the original owner of this tape seam to cut most of his recordings tight, there was not even a Granada logo at the start on this either.

Would love the series on here
