What I found stunning (amongst a lot of other things), is that every character seems to be fully modelled... bones + muscles + skin. I would totally understand this for the Hulk or creatures without clothing. But even for Hela and Thor you went so deep in subtle details ? That's madness ! Amazing job :)
It's because they only used their face in many of the scenes and the rest had to be CGI, without bones and muscles it would probably have looked odd in many cases.
It's like the difference between Bana Hulk and Norton Hulk, or why video game characters always have eyelids rendered at all times for when they have to blink. You never know when you'll need them to pop out, and it keeps characters from seeming like plasticine. Even the people--look at your wrist, what you see isn't a solid color. You see your blood vessels.
Blender, most likely.
I'm sorry, I only find this for "rtty" : www.acronymfinder.com/RTTY.html ... I don't get how it is pertinent here :)
LOL... and MS Paint
CGI = Complicated but Great and not Impossible
You guys did a lot of work, great job. I have learned to love CG from these videos.
Most of the studios use Houdini or Maya
@@somegabriel and nuke also
I love how random things like capes are entirely CGI for no apparent reason. Would you just do that to control how they flap in the wind or something? At any rate this is amazing, especially how everything is rigged with bones and muscles and all.
Hi - usually it's a case of the costume needing to be CG if it's interacting with CG elements! It's all on a shot by shot basis
I also think some scenes are needed to be fully modelled in 3d because you know, it was shown in 3d.
It's really cool that VFX companies go the extra mile to render all the passes for these showreels.
It's a lot of extra time and money beyond their brief.
I found the part where Thor arrives in a bunch of thunder very interesting. They used a digidouble to capture specular maps, normals and others. But you can see that in the end it's still Hamsworth.
Unlike Hella, who in many scenes was completely replaced. I believe this happened because she had an outfit with lighting conditions that would be very difficult to replicate in post-production. So it may have ended up being easier to replace the whole thing (with the exception of the face) so that the light and shadow conditions matched the scenery.
The vfx in this is mind blowing. It has re-inspired me to follow the vfx pathway that i'm on. Everything about this film was great and seeing the breakdown just makes it more spectacular!
Thors lightning is just amazing! great level of interaction with the models...
The music sounds like something that Daft Punk would produce.
The music is from Hotline Miami 2 OST - In The Face of Evil
I gotta say you guys did phenomenal work on this film. I really appreciate your work on the Hulk especially. I really feel like I can see Mark Ruffalo’s mannerisms in the Hulk. One thing I was curious about was Hela’s bodysuit. The antlers I get being digital but was there a specific challenge with her wardrobe that warranted it to be CG? I didn’t even notice it in the film so clearly it worked.
A few costume changes throughout production meant that it was easier to use CG - as well as it interacting with CG elements or simply because we needed to use a digidouble version in certain shots!
Doing little cgi myself (srsly like rendering stills that look 4/10 ) I have nothing but absolute respect for you guys.
It boggles my mind and I simply can't comprehend how much work goes into this. Just seeing how much is actually CGI blows my fucking mind.
So cool how you guys interact and answer questions in the comment section that others have asked. You guys are the true masters of this movie!
i love watching vfx breakdown
this was insanely good. i really where im from actually had a film industry where i can actually afford to hire this kind of talent help me to build the world i envisioned for my films. but until then i just have to make do with what i have but this craft and artform is really amazing.
Great work Framestore !!
This is incredible! Great work! Thank you - the movie is the best
As a vfx university student I enjoy seeing breakdowns from you guys and I'm also looking forwards to tomorrow morning, your head of talent Amy Smith is coming into my university tomorrow for the last day of Industry Week :)
Great news!
Indeed, it was a such a great informing event, my second highlight from the week as my first was Steve Wright the Nuke vfx guru :)
Which university are you studying
Is it a bachelor in animation or courses
I study a foundation degree of Visual Effects within my home town @Nottingham Trent University. I'm currently 2 months away until I finish my first year which then I will procede onto the 2nd year, at the end of the 2nd year you have an option to top-up to a bachelor degree which will be 1 year. I'm hoping to progress throughout all two years+ top up year :)
You are so luck men. I went to study media production in leicester and during my foundation year they told me that vfx subject will be available from my second year and now they kicked this out of programme. xD Im pretty jealous cuz idk how to start to self study myself in that case.
This looks fantastic
Might have to change my career this was great
Yes, join us!
Sitting on the chair everyday doing a specific stuff that the vfx supervisor told you to and that is big suck. You have to reach the director's requirement in order to get the job done. As the vfx supervisor it is even more pain because you have learn a lot of softwares and know how to make all the softwares to work with each others. Please prove me wrong because I'm looking forward for this career too
now tell me how they do breakdowns

Wow. Did you share ILM's CGI Hulk or did you build your own?
We ingested the asset from ILM but had to modify it within our own pipeline. Our first time working with the Hulk - it was great fun.
Modify it in what way?
Michael Boyle his haircut and he seems shorter
@@FramestoreOfficial I gotta tell you I hope you get the respect that you deserve for your job on every single movie...I heard about Rhythm N' Hues and what happened to them after making Life of Pi is a big shame...you guys are great. It would be really cool to have some images of those characters you work on and super close ups of those to see the detail of your creations.
@@FramestoreOfficial Did you do Endgame Hulk too?
amazing
Great work!
At 1:15, why do they keep her face while at the end they remake the CGI model of her face?
So with all the CGI and it being 3D models: Are they used for creating the 3D of the movie itself. Or is the 2D movie just put through the 3D conversation?
3d films are made by shooting on two cameras right next to eachother, just like someone's eyes, the images are then overlayed and the 3d glasses create the illusion of depth because you have two focal points as you would in real life and your brain interprets it as though it is 3 Dimensional. The vfx are done the same way, all the effects are rendered twice from the persepctive of two virtual cameras, and overlayed just like the plate footage.
Ryan Barr
Okay, thank you.
I knew that movies are filmed with 2 cameras, but this is just not the case for movies anymore.
They are always (except for Transformers 5 in 2017) post converted, so there are no 2 cameras, so I was wondering if the CGI is rendern in 2D and then post converted or if they already render the view for both eyes from the CGI (which you now proved to be right)
Nice work. 👌👌👌👌
i love this end end 3:02 lmao
I've always wondered whether Taika is secretly based, and that ending was a commentary on Europe
0:40 Cool
What Music did you guys used for this video ????
magic sword - in the face of evil

thx man
Any chance you guys take amateurs and train them? Wanting to do this as a career but schools is so expensive.
I would gladly relocate if I have to.
Check out our internship opportunities on our website!
Honestly, this movie should've been nominated for an Academy Award for Best Visual Effects but unfortunately it did not
Nah it had some bad cgi moments
Out of curiosity why model the muscles and bones if they to be covered up by the skin of the model? like @ 0:30-0:40
Physics and detail duh..if the skin stretches to a thin layer there'll be a muscle under it whose shape will be partially visible through the skin..they went way too much with the detail 🔥
So that when arms and legs extend or contract, the relevant muscles extend or contract also, allowing for more realistic animation.
Simulation - the skin deforms to follow the muscles, and the muscles have a firm but not absolute attachment to the bones.
I'm an African who'd like to work with framestore
hei hei hei, take it easy man
Hope I will work with you guys, i live for your work!
Korg does more fight in here than in the movie
0:07 Pokémon theme ?
As a wise man once said, if you want your CGI to look good, make everything CGI

Hi framestore! I am ending my bachelor in PIXL VISN for 3D and i dream about working with u!
Oh I thought ILM did the hulk
It was our first time working on the Hulk character in this film

To be honest, I could hardly tell, hela's costume was almost full cgi in every shot
What wtf yhea it was What why The fuck what fjgkcleldfucjglflf ocay
The headpiece is pretty noticable, its flat out obvious in the bridge scene.
1:25 you recreate her suit in 3d.... But why? It seems pointless.
It's not the same suit, maybe they changed the design later on. Anyway they had to recreate it for other scenes.
I'm only a photographer and retoucher, but I imagine it was done so that the movement of the head piece would be more realistic... connecting it to the rendered body would make for more realistic body movements.
Kaplia Pavel because her suit kept changing color as she drew power from asgard
@@sambloom955 no, look closely, its design change, which happens often in Marvel movies lately, like Captain Marvel suit in Endgame, Black Panther suit in Civil War, and so on
The color grading looks dull
