  • Destroyed by Barnacles | Can This Reel be RESTORED?
    In this video we found ourselves a treasure! Can this fishing reel be restored? Barnacle removal is going to be the key here. I need to know how to get this reel back to NEW! How can I remove the barnacles? Who knows how long this reel had been sitting in the saltwater, but the saltwater is destroying it and eating away at the reel itself. This Shimano Baitrunner is actually more expensive than I thought, but still is an affordable reel. If I can get this seized reel back to working order, I will be using it and keep it for the rest of my life. Saltwater destruction is a real thing, and this is proof. Whoever left us this fishing gear treasure THANK YOU!

    Soak it in Vinegar and water then blast it with the pressure washer. Break it down completely, oil and grease. 👍

    A lot of people in the comments with a lot of interesting suggestions (Cola seems to be the fan favorite). Lol I would try to knock off as many barnacles as I can, submerge in WD-40 overnight to loosen things up and open the damn thing, take out and replace all the bearings (Side plate, rotor, line-roller, and I think one in the handle (although this reel only has four bearings)), and replace any other part. Finally you should oil and grease as normal. I would use Corrosion X as sort of a sealing grease to give an extra barrier against sand and saltwater.

    My found rod and reel was a Penn. It was in better shape than that one. No barnacles. I think letting it dry out helped clean most algae off it. It's not perfect but still a good reel. The rod was a loss.

    • @CaptChrisCanning

      What type of penn reel was it? An what kind of process did you go through to get it smooth again?

    • @garydirks8223
      @garydirks8223 Před 4 lety

      Reel labeled as Penn 3000. Rod labeled PG1170. I pulled it up off the bottom at Arroyo City about 20 years ago. I cleaned it mainly with dish soap and a toothbrush and WD40. It was in much better shape than the one you found.

    Sorry I missed this when you first posted it. WD40 will dissolve quiet a few things. I would try soaking it in some of that. Your little friends at the end had rabies written all over them. L👀K closely and you can see it to. lol Interesting what will work. I shall keep looking for the magic formula. I would be careful around Capt. Josh. If he threw you in the water I'd hate to see a barnacle covered Chris! LOL Good luck. Take care and hopefully see you on or around the water. 👊
