- When we played racing games as kids, we usually did the same thing. Turn around the wrong way and ram all the other cars. So what happens when you make a game where that's what you are supposed to do?

If you kill all cars, to end the race with a "congratulations" and a huge bonus, you just need to finish your lap and take a victory lap with whatever checkpoint entropy you have left
I have DD64 and let me tell you, my Dad and I had so many amazing memories of playing it together. I still have "ghost" races saved from when we played together, which is awesome because he passed away back in 2015 but I have some cool leftover demo reels of us together playing. Deff one of my all-time faves. The simplicity makes it worthwhile. Sometimes "keeping it simple, stupid" really is all you need in a video game.
Sorry for your loss. Also thanks for sharing your story.
I used to rent this game all the time to play with my late father as well, it was so much fun.
That's really awesome! FF7 is actually depressing for me to play because of the memories of 2 lost loved ones associated with it.
HE DEAD
I'm impressed by the draw distance this game has. It's almost like a modern racing game with zero pop-up.
Whoa! You’re not joking! Very impressive
Indeed!
None of the classic N64 fog, and the frame rate is smooth’
I didn't notice that until I read this. Yeah a lot of N64 racing games have a really short draw distance, I played a lot of "Cruisin' World" as a kid which is like the very opposite of this.
He done rush 2099 or whatever. That was a really smooth game with zero fog. Infact most N64 games didnt have fog. But really bad blurry images
i mean if you had a game with draw distance the fog was there@@mobilesnapper79
The PS2 version of this game is an absolute hidden gem. It introduces a story, characters and items. Such a fantastic overlooked game.
Never knew this, putting it on the docket. Excited to try it out.
the “Bomb Tag” multiplayer mode in this was incredible, and I’m shocked that it’s never been ripped off by modern titles
This seems quite a bit different than Destruction Derby for the Playstation, or maybe I played it wrong? You got points for winning the races but you could be damaged or destroyed, and then during each circuit I believe it also included the more traditional bowl/arena demolition derbies.
I only played the PS game but this looks much better IMO.
They are totally different games. The dd64 is one of the best derby games ever made. It’s based on points, not first place on circuit. It’s not a racing game, it’s a true derby game.
Considering you are 163 games in i am kinda impressed by how few truly great games you've had so far.
The N64 catalog is really thin but top heavy. I think my favorite way I've heard it described is that's got 20 good games but those 20 are in the 40 best of their era.
"We" as normal 64 gamers used our judgement to pick out the good games and ignore the shovelware/mediocre titles.
Though we can say that the N64 has loads of great games, the N64 like most successful consoles has a lot of "meh".
The good news is that we didn't get all the good titles out of the way early on! I want to be drip-fed this content daddy
@@zaneseibert He's still got 9 Rareware games left!
There are reasons why the N64 was called the worst Nintendo console ever until the Wii U came along.
Moving to the marble race for game selection was such a good choice.
nah
Can confirm, this game was a blast with friends. We would time the jumps on the Aztec map so we’d collide in midair. I remember the ambulance being my favorite.
I actually really enjoyed Virtual Chess 64 as a kid. I only understood the basics of chess but it was fun to see the pieces attack each other. Can't wait for the video!
Twisted Metal music in the montages was a good choice.
Anyone know the name of those tracks? Bangers!
@@chuckobscure5622I don't know the names, but the ones at 8:25 are from Twisted Metal 2. The first is the Title Screen, and the second from the first level, Quake Zone Rumble. Not sure about the song at 11:10 though. Sounds like a remix of the Title Screen.
@@OshiiMikomi Thank you 😊
9:20 snow blind from jet moto
Lol the cover art for virtual chess caught me by surprise.
Thabs lil grin at 9:15 when he destroyed that car. Also he sounded like an auctioneer towards the end. You could become one how smooth that was
He's a great announcer for sports games, the only thing that makes them bearable in this, haha.
It's such a wild artifact of its time that the announcer says "Can't we all just get along?"
(For those who weren't around then - this is a reference to a speech made on TV by Rodney King in 1992 with the idea of calming down the riots happening in Los Angeles at the time in his name. The riots started because when he was arrested for drunk driving the police offers really severely and excessively beat him, arguably influenced by the fact that he was Black, it was caught on video, and then they were acquitted. King was not a well man, and he was brain damaged from the beating, plus he wasn't a public figure or anything, so his speech to try to stop the riots came across as mumbled, out of touch and unrealistically and inappropriately good-natured for the situation, so it became a joke - paraphrased as "Can't we all just get along?" and was widely used on TV and by people in general for years. It's the kind of joke that would absolutely not fly today, but it was a different time. And here it is immortalized in a 90s video game about car crashes.)
I was starting 7th grade during the riots. I remember a few years later hearing they even sodomized him with their batons. The fact that those officers got off without life in prison was/is a travesty of justice.
Gex is another game that made reference to this. I had no idea why at the time!
Never knew this, but that is super cool. I love when people add random bits of trivia to the games in this series like this. Thanks!
3:40 must be the Boeing factory.
Awesome video!
had this on 64 and loved it. I still go back every now and then and listen to the ost, it rips
I had this game on Playstation back in the day and I remember being stuck on like lvl 2 or 3 as a kid :D
That box art for Virtual Chess 54 is HIDEOUS. lolz Whoever made it needs a spanking.
He can't possibly mean ALL of them 😮
he means all of them!
But there are so many! How could he even choose the next game to play?
@@willythewynothat’s the twist! The next game is randomly selected, so he has no clue what it will be!
All of them?
I think he means all of them.
Broo. I loved this game as a kid. So much fun in multiplayer. Especially the game where you had a bomb with a timer on your car until you crashed into another car
Bomb Tag!
Oh yeeeeah, bomb tag. The little wick on the car was so scary. "It's gonna blow!"
I can't wait for Road Rash!
0:22 Looking Glass Studios? As in Ultima, System Shock and Thief- Looking Glass Studios???
Yup. Seems like they glossed over this gem in the most recent looking glass studio retrospective I watched
Chess huh. Shogi coming in 4th seems like an omen for the future.
Watching the random generator was a lot more fun than that Snoozefest 64 game.
That was not the cover art I was expecting for next week's game!
One of my favorite games growing up. We used to make fun of the woman yelling check point 😂
Hey Man! Thank you so much for inspiring me to do livestream of n64 games, I was so scared for such a long time but after watching you I got the courage! Thanks man!
you really don't realize the vast majority of N64 games were sports games and shitty driving games until you see someone play every single N64 game
The N64 has many great racing games, very few of them are bad, dvmb beach
You mean ALL of them? Get Guinness on the Phone!
As someone who did play the multiplayer mode with their brothers as a kid, it is indeed a fun experience, unless somebody picks the Ambulance because that thing is literally unkillable, it's the equivalent of picking Oddjob in Goldeneye.
(also the time trial is fun for a challenge I guess)
Wait until we get to the end and the marble race is just all classics. Every race is going to be white knuckle, edge-of-your-seat entertainment.
the bomb tag multiplayer was my favorite part of this game
Great video, these demo derby games were so fun. I loved the Twisted Metal 2 music you played during the crash montage.
I'm sure a million people have probably already mentioned this, but in real demolition derby the guys tend to back into each other so they hit them with the back of the car and don't blow the front end out with the engine in the steering right away. After the back of the car gets destroyed then they can start it guys with the front of their car because they'll tend to have like a Lincoln Town car or a Cadillac from the same time period. I don't know how realistic the game was, but I wonder if you were backing into people, if you would have lasted longer in those earlier matches. You were going dead nuts had to head game of Chicken in the early races lol
Probably my favorite ongoing series on CZcams. Keep chipping away!
Instant nostalgia, it's a very simple concept and not very in depth but still fun to pop in the console from time to time.
I love the twisted metal sound track in the montage
I played this game all the time as a kid and NEVER did the races. I would just do the Destruction Derby over and over and over. Great underrated game.
Been waiting for this one
Loved this game, it's one I revisit every often. It's closest spiritual successor I've played is Wreckfest, which I would recommend to anyone looking for a fun online wreck derby with better graphics experience.
This was one of the games I rented from Blockbuster back in the day. I honestly forgot it had a “racing” mode to it. I only did the arena demo mode but enjoyed it for the weekend I had it. Also played against another kid but it wasn’t as fun because we did 1 v 1 and was a lot of just chasing. But made that’s just the mode we did so it could have been more fun with bots.
> When we played racing games as kids, we usually did the same thing. Turn around the wrong way and ram all the other cars. So what happens when you make a game where that's what you are supposed to do?
That is a perfect description
Hell yeah it's that time of the week again! 2AM here in New Zealand when I can't sleep. Let's goooo!
The hardest part was always unlocking the other cars with the time trials! I remember playing runs over and over again to get the hot rod and the police car especially
The crash montage with the twisted metal 2 music tracks is legendary, perfect for the gameplay 😎
Great vid, thab!
Your editing and presentation skills have grown to the point that you can make watching a comparatively lame game a worthwhile experience Thab. Keep on truckin'.
I was waiting for this one, I have such good memories playing it.
I was hoping you'd do the Bomb Tag mode. It's an arena map where one person starts with a bomb and if they touch another car they pass the bomb. It's like a hot potato style game to not be the one holding the bomb when it finally goes off. It gets pretty intense, but like you said, becomes more interesting in split screen.
It feels like this game wasnt made to binge play. Gameplay looks fun for a few min, but then jde want to do something else lol. Yet it's chaotic enough ide want to come back to it.
Been loving the journey so far man, I know you're not even halfway through but Im going to somehow convince you to playthough the PSX library next. Theres like 1300 lol
Woah this is way different from the PS1 games.
Destruction Derby Raw was one of my favorite ps1 games never knew there was a 64game
You need to tell a T-shirt that says “That’s about all there is for this one. Game complete!”
A similar game with racing and mayhem like this is Crash n Burn for Ps2 and Xbox and the destruction aspect is so satisfying.
This feels like a precursor to the Flatout series.
Your channel has me addicted.
This is a game I loved so much as a kid after renting that I had to buy it. I still come back to it to this day.
Nice driving ace
Not sure if anyone noticed, but the track Alpine Ridge is the name of one of the levels from Spyro the Dragon. I guess they could get away with using it.
Nice touch with the twisted metal music.
I have endless memories playing this game with friends every summer break. This and super smash 64, were the best multiplayer on the console.
You are the best Thab
Let's go these are my favorite videos
I'm so happy you got to play something fun this time after last week
"Clear condition is defeat Magnus Carlsen".
Ha! Good luck on that buddy. Stockfish is your friend.
Looking Glass? The Same guys who did thief and system shock? Hells yeah they'd make an awesome car wrecking game. I need to find it.
i used to play this game so much in my early teens. Amazing game to play with friends.
Once you finally get down to like 8 last titles, you should see if we cant partner with that marble racing channel.
I had this game on the PS1 but I only remember crashing into cars in the same small ring. Still very fun.
Multiplayer's bomb tag mode is AWESOME lol i love the announcer when i qas a kid
Bomb tag on junkyard was the best part of this game. So many hours into that
I played this game a bunch when I was a kid i was hooked on it!
Loved this game as a kid.
The Muliplayer is a really good time for this game, love me some Bomb Tag.
I love the crash montage
I played this game soooo much love to see it again
My step dad and his side of the family actually do demolition derbies in real life so this game is extra cool for me lol
Dope!
Tremendous!
I remember this fondly
I love chess, can't wait to see your theory :D
Finally confirmed Ogre Battle 64 is on the list 😂!
Hopefully it doesn't take him 200 hours like my first playthrough did *:/*
I never see ogre battle 64 in this race and I can't wait for you to play that even though it's going to be a long video for you to make cause it's the only real RPG on the console.
Finally a classic, ahh the figure 8 track that's the stuff.
Can’t wait for next week! I hope there is an easy mode
Honestly this game looks like a lot of fun for a weekend
Ahh yea Twisted Metal soundtrack bonus too!
Y am I JUST NOW getting the notification?? This vid has been out for AN HOUUUR!
I played this game with a racing wheel back in the day. So much fun
I had so much fun as a kid on this one playing multiplayer arena courses.
Super hyped for Chess 64!!!
You're awesome
Nice. Virtual chess easily in the top 10 games, right up there with banjo Kazooie and Goldeneye.
Probably
The graphics look freaking awesome for the 64 what are you talking about ‘average’???
twisted metal 2 music thrown in, nice.
damn, i had no idea this had an N64 release, this is mostly known as a Reflections (famous for the Driver series) developed and Psygnosis published PS1 game, it's really weird they would just hand over the N64 rights like that but hey software is weird
There is a board game called Thunder Road Vendeta that is like this game and mad max combined. Tons of fun and chaotic.
Twisted Metal 2 music goes so hard.
Loved this game as a child, played so much
Metal thab racing
This looks fun. I'll pick it up, if I can find it.
