- The N64 never received a Metroid game. But what if I told you, Metroid 64 was here all along? Just... a bit different looking

For anyone who wants to give this game a shot I cannot emphasize enough how much better the remaster is. Tons of new areas and bosses that were originally unfinished are back, and the dark souls are distributed more evenly throughout as a result. Best addition by far is each of The Five getting their own Liveside area. I love the original but the remaster completely replaces it.
I honestly had no idea how you were going to cover this one due to its sheer size but I think you and your editor did a phenomenal job. I proudly beat this as a kid, and I had that exact map which was invaluable.
The Remaster is definitely far superior as you mentioned at the end, and you really get to experience the full effect of the incredible soundtrack this game had, for example:
When you first face the Vietnam Vet killer (who you mistook for the Lizard King) it plays this super unsettling, twisted and warped military version of the national anthem. Really adds a whole dark feel to the encounter.
The Home Improvement killer's abandon house is also filled with victim's corpses tied to chairs with walky talkies. And the closer you get to the killer you come across these strange canary bird houses (the killer's real name being "Avery Marx"). The music as you're closing in on him turns into this INTENSE industrial track which really puts you on edge.
The long section where you seek out Jack the Ripper plays Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata which gives you a real melancholy feel too.
Thanks for showing the cutscene with the guy in the prison, whos head randomly shakes and explodes, and the "Play as Dog" cheat 😂 Both very memorable.
I'm glad you pointed out how great the voice acting was, "I don't drink... WITH SNAKES!"
Hey thanks so much. I really appreciate it. Glad you enjoyed it
35:30 chatter says "Today is Mario Movie trailer day!" for a nice indication of how long ago Thab completed this game.
Nice observation!
The reason why it said 12/11 souls in the Cageways is this game has a very rare Dark Soul duplication glitch. I don't know what triggers it but sometimes a souls that you had picked up just respawns and you can collect it again. On my last playthrough of this game, I somehow duped two souls and ended up with 122/120 total.
This might be the biggest N64 world on the platform. It's pretty incredible how the developers worked around the restrictions on the cartridge and console.
Wrong
I think DK64, Aidyn Chronicles, Shadowman, Jet Force Gemini, Body Harvest and the Turok series are amongst the biggest.
This is one of my all time favorite games ever in the history of games
Disgusting
@@jhkuno88 The fuck is your problem?
Shame this guy got a ton of things wrong in his commentary, and paid no attention to the dialogue.
One of my favorite games all all time. Nightdive knocked it out of the part with the remaster restoring so much of the cut content. THATS how you do a remaster folks! For we are many!
Such a killer soundtrack as well
Super dark, disturbing and just oozing with atmosphere
I rented this game as a kid, and I was indeed screwed without the map.
I didn't even know this map existed and i beat the game 100% with no issues. I guess it helps that i love non-linear Metroid like games so i got good with them.
I spent hours on this game back in the day for Dreamcast. Very cool game
Same problem. Totally lost.
Yeah, I don't remember a map. I wanted to like this game as a kid but I just got really bored. Same with Turok.
@@AD-kv9kj I never played this game but I felt the same with Turok. It looked cool, and it played ok, but for some reason it was extremely boring to me. Couldn't finish it.
No matter how many times I have seen these I tighten up during the reveal for the next time and say, "Please not Mahjong ".
For real 😂😂😂😂😂
I'm still waiting on golden eye
yeah, or another broing sports game, there is so many of theeeeeem
We're all still waiting on Zelda, Mario64, Paper Mario, Perfect Dark, and a few other key titles.
Tactics Ogre 64 is going to be a long one. And I am excited for Quest64 since he already did mystical ninja.
Thab's commentary on the sports games at least keep them interesting. Only so much you can do with mahjong.
really great game, you should definitely check out the remaster which put back in a load of the content which had to be cut due to time constraints!
Glenn is back! I love your content, dude. Glad to hear about you again.
@@GabMacedoo yup been back a few weeks now, loads of uploads ✌️
@@n64glennplant that’s awesome!
Yea but its missing the nostalgia factor
You and Beast have a lot in common it seems Glenn,,,,you both disliked TopGearRally which to this day i find it baffling....its one of the best racing games on the system and will stand by it till i die....i mean i beat it recently again and i still quite enjoyed it
This game is amazing. My favorite game ever.
The remaster adds SO much new content and the updated controls are almost perfect.
A lot of people have mentioned the remaster already, but I cannot stress enough how well done it is.
Nightdive went so far as to restore and finish content that was cut from the original release, giving all of The Five their own levels, instead of corralling three of them into the prison.
About the insane amount of lag at 40:16: It's almost certainly caused by the big transparent blood particles covering the entire screen. It's a classic slowdown, happens a lot in old PC games as well.
Source: i make games and guess about things on youtube.
The fact that it stops being laggy the moment the blood disappears kinda gives it away.
Yeah, alpha transparencies were not cheap in terms of fill rate back then specially if they covered the whole screen
This game is so underrated but if i can put it in a word , i would say its a MASTERPIECE
this game was amazingly good in 1998. its like Zelda meets Tomb Raider and smother it in horror and spookiness.
The remaster tightens up the controls and breathes some new life to the graphics with lightning effects. its definitely the best way to play it.
So, I went to the channel he told us about where he streams the full games. I guess I just never noticed it before.... And 78 is the number of games he is ahead of these review videos! Holy.....Shit
Finding out about that channel for the first time was like knowing every gift you'll ever receive for the next 15 years!
And not necessarily in the best way
This game looks so mature for me as a kid. It was a marked change in tone when contrasted to other Nintendo Power coverage.
"I swam around in the poop water for a while and that led to a pretty nice house" sounds like someone describing their career in politics.
Love this game! For anyone that might want to play it:Get the remaster.
It restores a bunch of mssing content and is just the best version of the game
Also, never play the german version of the OG game. Heavily censored and they made dogs immortal for some god forsaken reason.
Need to add to not play the playstation version.
Night dive studios is the best. Their remake of turok 1 and 2 are incredible.
@@alexmacdougall5700 They just remastered Turok 3 as well and its just as good as the other two. Love that the whole trilogy is remastered now!
This game really was something special man, playing the remaster was a blast for me. I miss when horror had this edge to it. The writing for this series is phenomenal, build on a couple of solid concepts as foundations. Would love to read the comics someday, and I'm not even a comic book reader.
Crazy how they don't have freedom of speech in Germany.
I played some of the PC remaster after seeing THAB play this, and it's really good!
I'm suprised I never heard of this game! It's a really good metroidvania! I like how shadowman canonically wears blue jeans.
I had to stop myself because I would get off task all day playing shadowman lol.
Interesting watching this video knowing a ton of Acclaim staff ended up at Retro Studios after the company imploded. Especially when the first pitch for Metroid Prime was for it to be Third Person Shooter like this game.
I believe I read in a book about sid meyer that they used to come up with clever ways of avoiding piracy and one of the ways was putting stuff in the manual. Especially images because they were harder to pack into a pirated copy.
One thing I appreciate about the new remastered update is that they actually give you objectives for each area so you know what to do. It is significantly less cryptic now. I still love the OG though
All these dark souls, makes a man want to link the first flame.
SWEEEET. This one gets forgotten, but it has really cool plot elements. Pretty Dark for the Nintendo hahaha.
The box was sweet too, had like, raised art. Turok 2 did the same thing.
Genuinely one of my favorite games ever. Top 3 on N64, for sure. The remaster that recently came out is amazing, and I recommend it to everyone.
This is THE game I've been waiting on! Out of all of them, you'd be hard pressed to find a more interesting game on the entire N64 console
This game is unique
"I was lost for hours and then I found a place that I missed that led me to a place where there was much to do"
That is the gaming experience with those old games, I've been playing videogames for around 25 years and I still don't know if I have to love or hate those moments.
Yes, that's just how games were. I have fondness for games that somehow balance this without giving you an arrow to every waypoint.
The older I get, the more I like that. Tired of having my hand held in games.
@ABitMoreJordan Me playing Luigi's mansion as a kid. Missed one key room, checked every other room instead 😂 lost for hours...
I found all the treasure, gold bats and gold mouses in the mansion! 😂😂😂
back in the day there was a telephone number you could call and describe your videogame related problem. like "i'm just past that big lava lake in the temple and what next?", and you would get connected to a dude playing the game real time and who knew shit and who could tell you exactly what to do. just like asking for directions in traffic. this was the nintendo gaming hotline. wondering if such still exists.
This was one of my favorite N64 games and played it extensively - the recent remaster really was a good remaster as stated earlier. Was excited for this one from you! Love the work!
I think an interesting subplot of this series is the difference in haircut each time
When I played the remaster for this game last year, I made a notepad file and whenever I found a place I couldn't get past, I wrote that down so when I got the proper ability, I'd know exactly where to go. Made the game a thousand times easier to navigate.
been waiting for this one, got lost as a kid and also got stuck again as an adult, such a maze of a game
I remember seeing this at Blockbuster or Hollywood video. I wasn’t old enough to rent it but always thought it looked so cool. Was always curious about it. Glad you got a chance to play it, the remaster seems really interesting to play.
Just a heads-up, the PC version of Shadow Man had a worthwhile goodie behind the level 10 coffin gate. It was a digital art book with commentary by the devs. I guess it didn't fit on the N64 cartridge anymore, so they just put a second violator in there.
Are we not gonna talk about the swagger when he backs up shooting?
Great content. I don't usually watch full hour long videos on CZcams but I enjoyed this. I loved this game as a kid but couldn't beat it. I got to really enjoy it finally with the remastered version as a grown up with the patience to get lost in giant mazes.
I've been waiting for this one! I love this game!!
I’ve forgotten so much about the many games I’ve played over the years, but I’ve never forgotten that joke that Luke tells near the end. Thanks, brain.
Good work on getting through so many games already. I like how u went indepth in the lore and the map
Not to be all weird but, Legion originally was many demons, who had possessed a man in the Bible. When asked its name it said "My name is legion, we are many".
Always a nice way to start my Friday, thanks Thab
You're doing a service to cool people and we appreciate it.
Beat this one finally a year ago on the N64 and I still love it. The atmosphere, story and adventurous feel more than make up for any shortcomings.
One of my favorites from my childhood, such a cool premise and story from what I remember
I LOVED this game as a kid and have been thinking about doing another playthrough sometime soon. Had no idea there was a remaster, im definitely going to check that out!
My gog I don't know how you do it man. Keep it up. You deserve to be in the Guiness world record after you complete this and also the best guide to beat every N64 game
This is honestly my favorite series going including all of the tv and streaming shows out there
It's worth noting that this game is based on a comic book series, where the lore is explained better and in more detail.
I first played this game as a 7 year old in 1999. I beat it in the following year qnd have loved it ever since ❤
Really enjoyed this one man! Are you compiling all the data for when youve completed them all? I'd love to see them all ranked. Keep killing it my dude!
This series never disappoints. Nice work thab and craw!
I agree completely! Lotta QoL updates in the remaster but playing this as a kid blew my mind. I had to print out an old gamefaqs walkthrough to get all 120 souls, though I did get level 9 at least without help =P
Gamefaqs and printer companies really had a hold on us.
I love this series. Keep it up man!
I love how the five in the game are actually based on real life serial killers too, makes it EXTRA creepy dude :P
This seems like a really cool game for the N64 era. I can't believe I've never heard of it before. Probably because it's M rated and I was young at the time.
The intro at 0:04 get me every week 😂
I originally played this game back in around 2000 (or possibly 2001), for the Sega Dreamcast; and I was immediately hooked. I absolutely adore this game. Not too long ago I bought the Remastered version on Steam, and it is just as good - and even better - than I remembered it. If anyone loved this game back then I highly recommend the Remastered version.
By the way, an actual sequel to this game was made on the PlayStation 2, but is exclusive to it; it was never ported or remastered on any other platforms (Shadow Man: Second Coming).
1:10 "we are legion" is now more associated with Anonymous than its biblical origins
Debatable. Depends on who you're talking too.
54:09 omg I was gonna say he better bring up “as a dog” one more time for this
Calls a furnace room futuristic
This was the first game that scared the hell out of me as a kid. I had a Brazilian Portuguese version as well and could at least understand what the game wanted me to do (I'm Brazilian) but I couldn't play it without my dad to get through the scary parts for me. lmao
I'm Brazilian as well but had an American version and frankly I was super lost as a kid playing this. I would try to play alone but had to play with the volume down as I was only 5 or 6.
I think you should add that your full playthroughs are in your description into your regular scripts that you have for these videos, because this is the firs time I've ever heard this!
I was waiting for this one
13:48. That's frigging Tommy Vercetti man!
25:32 I love the completely deadpan understatement about Shadow Man having "some negative things to say" about the playrooms.
Shadow Man: "I now have come so far my sensibilities lie benumbed by all I see. I do not embrace this horror, but rather stand immobile beneath its self-indulgent gaze."
Glad to see youre still at it, very impressive
Love this game. Needed a guide at times to help navigate, but still a great game. Plan on replaying the remake.
Idk how this channel doesn’t have a million subscribers yet. Keep up the great work Thabby Babby
Oh boy, grab the popcorn kids! It's time for another movie!
Finally, the one I have been waiting for!
Found your channel in February 2023 and have been waiting for this since. Feels like something came full circle.
finally been waiting for this 1
Now we can really see how backed up you are! Chat is talking about the trailer for the Mario movie!
Great video. I bought this game on release. I remember this really scary bit early on moving through these really scary rooms on the way to meet 1 of the 5. From memory I thought it was Jack the Ripper, but maybe I'm remembering something wrong. I eventually just found the game too difficult and couldn't progress ... I wonder if I didn't work out you can lock onto enemies, or didn't backtrack to get better weapons, dunno.
I always wondered about this game. It's cool to find out it's a metroidvainia style game!
TIL why a game I adored for the first day of my blockbuster rental, has had me cursing its name for years. THEY, GAVE, YOU, A, MAP?! No wonder I got inexplicably fucking stuck
Thanks for the Video :)
I never got into that Game, even though I tried. Never clicked.
Great playthrough:)
33:55. I thought he meant “Lava Ducks.” I’ve never been so disappointed
Fun fact about all classic version of Shadow Man, there's a chance an already collected Dark Soul could re-spawn, which happened to you. I remember this happened to me twice, one when i first played the N64 version and again in the Dreamcast version. It has something to do when the game fail to check the Dark Souls already collected when you are warping.
I remember playing this back on release and just wandering around for hours not knowing where to go or what to do
Can’t wait til Nightmare Creatures it was bloodborne before bloodborne, way ahead of its time
Shadow Man is one of the best games I discovered in this challenge ! So much fun ! Also, impecable french on all these voodoo items ! :D
Oh man, Shadow Man is giving me some Spawn, and Mortal Kombat vibes with those grimy late-90s visuals. I remember seeing advertisements, but I never actually looked into it. Cursory check shows Shadow Man (not Shadowman - mind the space) was a comic book character written by Garth Ennis? Cool, loving the Voodoo theming.
Also, Nice, Penny Racers; I played that game - pretty cute Power-Up racer, but it's no Mario Kart.
great video thab
I don't know much about the first Shadow Man, but its 2002 sequel 2econd Coming is the subject of one of Acclaim's strangest marketing plans: With loved ones' consent, _peoples' gravestones_ would be used as advertising space for the game.
We missed out on the thumbnail being Shadow man grabbing ThaBeast's skulll
You asked for it 😂
I had this on Dreamcast! But I never got very far because I had too many games to play. Your video made me want to play it again.
This is a N64 game I’ll always remember and cherish. Glad it came to the Switch.
Had much fun and the story is good too.
Played this game when I was a kid and I still consider it to be one of the most prominent pieces of 'demonic serial killer' themed media. The remaster replaces the repeated prison levels given to the psx version with each of the killers own lair. So Milton Pike and uhhh...Casey I believe his name was...get their own levels like they were supposed to in the first place, rather than having 3 bosses in the prison.
Their levels are a great way to 'step into the mind' of each of these killers, making this game a horror juggernaut already and I haven't even commented on the dead side pathways and levels. Running loops in the asylum and some of the caverns would almost make me feel like I was being driven into madness, the level design is phenomenal, everything feels hostile like its made out of pure twisted hatred.
Never had a chance to read the comics this is based on but I do know they're far more mature themed. 10/10 game, even though the n64 port was one of the worse ports.
This series makes me realize just how many games were on this console that I'd never heard of.
What's crazy is all these obscure games and someone has a story about growing up with it. I had a friend in high school and his mom bought him this game. I never knew it was rated mature.
As many have probably said in the comments the Remaster is fantastic, possibly one of the best remasters of all time when it comes to preserving the original experience, while offering awesome QOL upgrades and restoring unfinished content. You'll be glad to know the weird low framerate crushers at the asylum entrance remain untouched lol
i think its time for a sequel for this game. Enjoyed watching it. Thanks Thab!!
There is one on PS2/DC. It's rubbish, sadly
That was a wild experience, so different from the other games on the console!
Got a better rating than I expected at the end.
I love Shadow Man mainly for the setting, atmosphere and themes. I love that supernatural, demon, death dimension sort of stuff.
There is no reason to ever play the old versions anymore though with the Remaster out. It's so much better.
i love you soo much man ..;... plz continue with these series
This game was oddly intriguing to me as a kid and i recently played the remaster for a nice trip down memory lane. Luckily I still had the map from my ps1 copy. Pretty cool referring to a physical map while navigating the game.
I was so looking forward to this game back in the day but didn't finish it. I got bored with endlessly trekking through the same coloured corridors
Never forget to name your dead baby Shadow Man to Turok your Bloodvertising
Can't believe I never heard of this game, it seems awesome.
Love the long vids!~
