@@keithmora3708 Yes they were very colorful. They also had some good movies. Never had a bad experience that I remember. Boarding didn't take long either despite the size of the airplane.
When I was a kid (mid 80s) we lived near Frankfurt Airport. In case of bad weather planes were rerouted an flew literally over our house. One type of plane made an insanely loud but awesome racket. Doing some research on commonly used types back then, the circle of suspects narrowed down to the DC10, 727 and this badboy here. And I finally have the answer - it was the Lockheed! Great plane, great noise!
The L1011 is one of the most beautiful aviation designs ever created. The integration of the centerline engine into the tail is sheer genius and flows with the beauty that was this wonderful bird. So sad to see that it is no longer flying.
I swear Rolls-Royce are the top specialists when it comes to making nice-sounding engines. Considering the next generations of engines they've made, always been the best sounding across every era.
I was fortunate enough to fly in the L-1011 a few times back in the mid 70’s. I believe it was either Delta or Eastern, but most likely Delta. I was only about 15, but already an aviation geek! The pilot allowed me to take pictures in the cockpit during a layover in Atlanta and actually left me ALONE in there for a couple minutes. I’ll never forget it and still have the pictures!
It is a plane that pilots love and engineers hate because it is complicated, which means 1011, ten tires and 11 hydraulic sources. It is the pride of the industry and the most beautiful one to fly in the air. It is the beautiful Tristar Lockheed.
I used to work fro Trans World Airlines as Fleet Service Helper. That meant servicing the lavatory's at the flight line. I worked afternoons and when the shift was over i would sit as close as possible to the runway's and wait for the cargo planes to leave. DC-10 and L1011's. Loved that sound....!!!
I remember the Large hangars of the Lockheed plant you could see from miles away in the desert of Palmdale, CA. My aunt worked on the Tristar assembly line for many years.
Lots of historical footage around due to it's age but here's an exception: High quality sound and 4k video. Excellent work. This sight and sound quality was only previously seen in real life!!....Headphones on, full screen mode!! Last flew on a British Caledonian L1011 about 1994. Much quieter from the inside, of course.
A favorite sound of mine, right beside the whirring buzzsaw like sound of the General Electric CF-6-50 of the DC-10-30. Unlike the high pitched whine of the CF-6-50, the L-1011's Rolls-Royce RB211 has a lower pitched growl that changes into a muffled growl once the plane passes by.
Definitely. The sheer amount of innovation Lockheed Martin pumps out for NASA and the military makes me wonder where we’d be if they had a commercial branch.

@@futonclutch5040 I agree, and yeah, one of the things that made sure the L-1011 never did as well was because the RB211 was the only engine option ever offered and it was, to your point, developed specifically for the aircraft and bankrupted Rolls-Royce in the process. This vid exceeded my expectations. I came to the site in hopes of finding a historic vid of one taking off and landing. But no...BAM, right on top, this HD vid taken from an awesome vantage point. In Jr. High in the late '70s, I was a huge commercial aircraft fan, having built maybe 6-8 of the more popular aircraft of the period. Even at 15, the L-1011 was my favorite. On one occasion, likely flying out of San Diego's Lindberg Field, the flight out to MI on Delta originally had us on a 707 or 727. But they made a last minute change to an otherwise not-busy Tristar. I was ecstatic. I hadn't yet flown on one and it just couldn't have been a sweeter surprise. I'm now 57 and recently bought a 1:48th scale Corsair model kit. And received just last week, a rare Entex 1:100th scale L-1011 model kit, produced in 1975 and everything including the box looks virtually new. I'm not sure I can build it. I surely *must* have one built and visually appreciable. But I'm thinking to buy another, storing the one in the best condition and build/display the other. Like most of us Tristar fans, we love that rear center engine. Just by looking at it (rear corner POV is my preference), it makes itself well understood as always up to engage in some exceedingly serious jet engine thrust production. So scoring a relatively large model so I can more thoroughly visually absorb it, believing it's quite possibly the coolest commercial aircraft of the last 50 years...is a good thing. Great vid (and the one of the tour of the cabin).
I maintained Tristars for 25 years they were fantastic aircraft well ahead in technology when they entered service. Super easy to maintain as long as you were properly trained, unlike the many who hated them, who were probably not adequately trained.
