A great beginner video on feeds and speeds but I have to say telling your audience to ignore “chip load” is doing them a disservice. That’s probably the most important piece of information users need. Why? Not all machines are created equal and a hobby machine made with extruded aluminum is not as rigid as say a welded steel frame found on better quality machines. The two machines will run at different feed rates as you can’t plow into hardwood or aluminum at the same feed rate and DOC on both machines. This is where chip load come into play. If you understand chip load you can vary the feeds and speeds for your particular machine and still maintain the same chip load and get great, clean cuts. Router bit manufacturers publish chip load data for this very reason, not all machines are created equal. The Vectric software will calculate chip load for you so you can get the best feeds and speeds for your machine. I suggest you talk to whoever makes your bits and include the chip load for each bit in your app. In my opinion this should be taught first before you talk about feeds and speeds. Understanding chip load will make you a better CNC user. If a user calculates feeds and speeds with your app and when they start cutting they are getting some chatter, if they understand chip load it’s an easy adjustment. They can simply adjust the feeds and speeds for their machine while maintaining the correct chip load so as not to overheat the bit or break it. When you break a bit, it’s because the chip load was wrong. When you overheat and burn material, it’s because the chip load was wrong. Chip load is a very important topic and CNC router users need to understand it to make the best cuts with their machine and get the longest life out of their router bits.
Boy do I wish all this existed when I started my CNC journey over a year ago... that being said, it is so amazing to have all the feed and speed info in my pocket when I am at my computer. To have the adjusted info for the different material types is gravy. You are the best resource out there and I'm so grateful to have been learning from you, even several months before I even bought my Longmill! Thanks!

I've been working on a large cribbage board out of 1.5 Beautiful Cherry and have been petrified to dive into it in fear of destroying my material. I've been practicing on some 2x10's glued together and feeds and speeds are critical. Cherry being harder than fir is a game changer. I have been using the Android version of the app for a couple of months now. It includes the Makita router settings. Use it to check the speed for each bit as i change bits.
Hi Garrett. Request for a CZcams video - Would you be interested in doing a 'Feeds and Speeds' video in regard to hardwood vs softwood? What, if any, thought process and tool speed/feed adjustments if moving between the two different types of wood. For instance, I like to prototype on less expensive woods which are generally softwoods. But, with softwoods there are challenges with splintering or edges fraying and leaving 'whiskers' and such. Hardwoods cut much cleaner and is easier to do. Cedar is great for outside and weathering but is very difficult to dial in with the speeds and feeds (I often re-run the tool path to clean up the cuts but still find myself with a sharp knife for final trimming). Moving from softwood prototype to a hardwood final product - what things should I take into consideration with feeds and speeds? Just a thought. I can't seem to find this topic discussed in any depth in relation to cnc on this subject. As always, love the vids!

Great video and I really like that you are so forthcoming with information. It seems like it is almost impossible to pry helpful information out of experienced CNC woodworkers. I downloaded and I like the app also. One thing I needed help with is for the "Spindle" setting it recommended a speed that my 500W @12,000 RPM max spindle can't achieve. Is there a possible update that will have a variable speed or spindle selection for those that don't use routers? I know it's a fairly simple math equation to make the change, but in app would be awesome.

Garrett does make great learning videos. I believe you might be referring to the blue tape you see people using. It is called Painter's Tape and usually comes in two (2) colours: blue & green. It comes under a few different names / titles - depending on the manufacturer.
Tony, it looks like Alp got to you first my fried! He is absolutely right, a lot of CNCers use blue painters tape. You may also be thinking of Oramask, it's a pretty popular thing to use for this type of thing. Awesome video and app! I have one app feature request of including the spindle speed in frequency too. My Laguana Swift 4x8 CNC has a frequency spindle drive so I have to convert the IDC spindle speed to frequency (RPM/60). Extra brownie points to be able to print out the bits feeds & speeds so that I can tape it next to my CNC frequency drive! Thank you for all you do!

Silly question for the group. All the info is in the description for the bit I am using. Does this mean when I am in G Sender I no longer need to go to the firmwear tab and enter the 3 speeds from Sienci Labs website they provided? I was wondering if you could help out with a whiteside 60 degree feed speed question. I want to primarily make signs using this bit and pine or Baltic birch ply. The recommended feed is 100 and speed 18000, but the carve isn’t totally clean ( fuzz etc) especially on plywood. Would it be possible to slow the feed to 60 without burning up the bit? Thanks! I have your tool database so maybe I’ll check for 60 degree bit recommendation.
Rebecca, that would be a good call. Try out 60 feet per minute and see if it works out. The tool database or the app are a good reference for you despite using a different brand!
Great F&S video. I do a lot surfacing of mesquite with a 2” 3flute carbide bit. But I do it manually on a 4’x4’ bench top. Is there a tool paths out there.for the x& y axis that I can program?

Hey Jeff. That is an online vent system for my CO2 laser. I do not have a program for flattening boards because every board is a different size. That would be an impossible task. But I believe I have a video about it. It follows the same principle as spoil board flattening except you want to make sure that your surfacing follows the grain of the wood, not across it
Ed, that is a great question and yes you should! I would recommend reducing your feedrate in half if your stepover increases to a full cut like a profile cut and seeing how your machine can handle it. You are usually limited by the machine and not the bit!
@IDCWoodcraft Garrett, I ordered 12 of your bits over the weekend, the Starter Set and the two 1/4" Tapered Ball Nose bits. I downloaded the VCarve Tool Library and imported. All good. One problem I am going to have is that my spindle cannot reach the RPM that your Feeds/Speeds call for. For example, let's say a bit needs to be spinning at 24,000RPM. I can't reach that. I'd like to know if there's a recommendation for adjusting down the feed rate in accordance with the spindle speed. I suspect the "Chip Load" is the calculation to watch for. I haven't seen this question answered on any of your videos (or Mark Lindsay's), so I thought I'd see if you could address it here. Thanks a bunch.
I tried using the Chip Load method... it worked! These bits cut so much more cleanly than my cheap bits that I had before. It's especially noticeable when VCarving. The 1/4" 60 degree V bit did a much, much better job than my old 60 degree V bit.
Tim, I will tell my developer to have settings for plywood like Baltic Birch. In the mean time I recommend you use the "pine" setting, that will be your best bet!
So Sir, what is the fastest feed and speed software for cnc any cnc mashins, especially for woodcraft which has to be faster, but not for aluminum and hard materials we understand that has to be slow
Masis-dr5el, that is a tricky one and it really depends on your machine! If you have a more rigid machine with a high powered spindle, you can run it a lot faster! That is the key factor my friend!

Hello, I downloaded the app and I like that all of the information is on there for me to dial in the correct settings in my machine. However, I do have a few bits I purchased on Amazon. I can't seem to find the correct bits I purchased there, so how do I go about getting the correct settings for these bits? Is there a way for me to find those bits in the app? I recommend going into the IDC store, adding an item to your cart, and input your address when prompted. You will be able to view your specific shipping cost before you will need to pay for anything. That will be the most accurate! Keep in mind that you might also incur customs and duties fees when importing the bits into your country. Machinist for 43 years. I use 3.82 x the s.f.m and router bits are like end mills . That is .002 per tooth.

does the feed rate decrease if you are taking a full cut, say a profile cutout, verses taking a cut at 40% step over?
Ed, that is a great question and yes you should! I would recommend reducing your feedrate in half if your stepover increases to a full cut like a profile cut and seeing how your machine can handle it. You are usually limited by the machine and not the bit!
@IDCWoodcraft Garrett, I ordered 12 of your bits over the weekend, the Starter Set and the two 1/4" Tapered Ball Nose bits. I downloaded the VCarve Tool Library and imported. All good. One problem I am going to have is that my spindle cannot reach the RPM that your Feeds/Speeds call for. For example, let's say a bit needs to be spinning at 24,000RPM. I can't reach that. I'd like to know if there's a recommendation for adjusting down the feed rate in accordance with the spindle speed. I suspect the "Chip Load" is the calculation to watch for. I haven't seen this question answered on any of your videos (or Mark Lindsay's), so I thought I'd see if you could address it here. Thanks a bunch.
I tried using the Chip Load method... it worked! These bits cut so much more cleanly than my cheap bits that I had before. It's especially noticeable when VCarving. The 1/4" 60 degree V bit did a much, much better job than my old 60 degree V bit.

derekjenkinson8014, depths per pass are part of the feeds and speeds brother! It is all in the app for each bit too!
I downloaded the app but wasn't able to find "Plywood" like Baltic Birch. How do feed rates for MDF compare to Plywood?
Tim, I will tell my developer to have settings for plywood like Baltic Birch. In the mean time I recommend you use the "pine" setting, that will be your best bet!

Masis-dr5el, that is a tricky one and it really depends on your machine! If you have a more rigid machine with a high powered spindle, you can run it a lot faster! That is the key factor my friend!

Hello, I downloaded the app and I like that all of the information is on there for me to dial in the correct settings in my machine. However, I do have a few bits I purchased on Amazon. I can't seem to find the correct bits I purchased there, so how do I go about getting the correct settings for these bits? Is there a way for me to find those bits in the app? Or do I have to recommend them to you via the app? Thanks so much! The app looks very helpful.
panopticarts9907, I am sorry brother but I only currently have IDC Woodcraft bits on the app. For the bits that you purchased off amazon, your best bet is to reach out to the manufacturer to get the right feeds and speeds for those bits brother!

abhishek7271, I sure do brother! As for shipping costs, it really depends on where you're located. I recommend going into the IDC store, adding an item to your cart, and input your address when prompted. You will be able to view your specific shipping cost before you will need to pay for anything. That will be the most accurate! Keep in mind that you might also incur customs and duties fees when importing the bits into your country. I cant determine these fees on my end so its best you do your research if you are worried about it brother!
