    In the world of music, there’s a master of sound,
    His name is Dave Rat, with talents abound.
    With Rat Sound Systems, his great little crew,
    There's no audio problem they can't see through.
    Dave, oh Dave, with your keen listening ear,
    When you're on the soundboard, there's nothing to fear.
    From the lows to the highs, and all in between,
    You sculpt the sound waves, unseen but serene.
    He twists and he tweaks, he tests and he tunes,
    In arenas and halls, 'neath the sun and the moons.
    From Red Hot Chili Peppers, to festivals galore,
    With Rat at the helm, the sound we adore.
    No feedback or fuzz, no unwanted noise,
    With precision he works, with the utmost poise.
    His speakers and mixers, his microphones too,
    Work magic in harmony, a symphony for you.
    So here's to Dave Rat, the king of the beat,
    Making every performance oh-so neat.
    In the realm of sound, he's a pioneer,
    Thanks to him, music's never been so clear.
    From concert to concert, city to city,
    His work's never done, but oh, what a pity.
    For the best sound around, he's your best bet,
    In the world of sound engineers, he's the safest bet yet.
    So tip your hat to Dave Rat, say cheers and applause,
    For he's the wizard of sound, without any flaws.
    In the land of the rhythm, the melody, the song,
    Dave Rat, with his Rat Sound, is where he belongs.

    Such a good tour cycle and run with Josh! Saw the chili's about 4 times in that whole 10 years from 2013 Fonda, Coachella 2013, an LA Gig & Ohana fest towards the end. It sure sounded great every time too of course.

    Since becoming a fan of you (full disclosure: the first videos of yours I saw, I had so much wrong info on audio that I went into each video thinking you where wrong. Thank you for curung me of that), I have conflicting feelings about my life choices.
    On the one hand, I'm filled with regret about not going in the direction of live stage work, because I was asked many times but not until now so I see how fulfilling those kind of jobs can be, but on the other hand it's VERY doubtful that I would have ever reached your level of competence!
    But then again, on the other hand...

    It's always been my dream to run FOH. I had experience as a local stage hand in New Orleans about 12 years ago doing various things but I had to find better pay. But if the day comes I would love to come work for Dave Rat because he's got the knowledge to make you one of the best out there.

    I remember you talking about why you mix, with the board to the side

  • @artysanmobile
    @artysanmobile Před rokem +1

    I like setting the console to the side. A large console commands way more attention than it merits when a handful of controls is all that is actually needed once you’ve built it. I find in the studio as well that anything obscuring the process enhances the experience. The visual element of sound mixing has wildly outgrown its necessity likely because… it sells.
    Message to my future tools:
    “I’m as easily distracted as anyone.
    If I have not touched a relevant control for some period of time, please don’t show it to me.
    Make that decision for me with an opt-out rather than shouting all you know all the time.”
    I hope to see ‘dark mode’ as a prominent feature of future equipment, set automatically and globally to award us with that incentive to listen for a problem rather than look. This goes right down the line for all hardware indicators and display; if I’m not looking, shut them off.

      I haven't really looked into it much, but at least on some of the Yamaha boards I've worked, you could link various brightness settings to assignable knobs, so you could do your adjustments and then switch off or dim all of the console, until you want to make some changes again.

    • @DaveRat
      @DaveRat  Před rokem

      Yeah if you turn off all the board lights and dim everything down to its dimmest you can get kind of less intrusive with the lighting there. And it's not too difficult to mix without the screen.
      The issue is feel the fact that you can't feel the nub on the knob and know where it's pointed like you can on an analog console

  • @Arthur-ke9vz
    @Arthur-ke9vz Před rokem +1

    Dave, could you please tell me where one would look to get started in a position as a stagehand, etc. I have a few friends here in North Carolina very interested. Thank you

    • @DaveRat
      @DaveRat  Před rokem +1

      I don't really know that much about getting a stage hand gig. I've had some friends that have got jobs at various production houses and work their way up to becoming Union members.
      As far as sound system tech, probably best to visit some of the local sound companies for lighting companies.
      But there's definitely some skills you want to have before you do that like knowing how stuff wires and works winding cables and such

    Hey thanks for sharing, that was neat. I'd have thought that side on would be annoying..... but you don't seem to mind?

    • @DaveRat
      @DaveRat  Před rokem +1

      Having the board in front creates a sound reflection off the board that's kind of annoying and keeps you focused on looking at knobs and faders, I prefer to watch the show and then address the controls as needed rather than focus on the controls.
      That said it only works because I have everything well dialed in. If you have a lot to do or are in a state of chaos than having the controls available to both hands is probably better

    • @MrPeeBeeDeeBee
      @MrPeeBeeDeeBee Před rokem +1

      @@DaveRat Mixing the show instead of the gear - yes! Sound reflecting of the board? Whoa radical. I guess there aren't enough knobs on a digi board to act as a diffuser like say on a big old Midas with a gazillion knobs hahaha

    • @DaveRat
      @DaveRat  Před rokem +1

      Putting a metal reflective plate in front of you with or without knobs He's going to sound different than not having a reflective metal plate in front of you

      @MrPeeBeeDeeBee Před rokem

      @@DaveRat Consoles angle back into the venue so they would be picking up scattered sonic reflections. Please correct me if I'm wrong here but you'd be likely to mix at around 105db C weighted and you can hear that?.... Geesh what'd it be like for guys who have to wear glasses? Those concave lenses are wave guiding shit right back at you... 🤓

  • @GizzyDillespee
    @GizzyDillespee Před rokem +1

    Would be cool to have the music in time lapse too... not perfectly sped up exactly, but granular slices just like the video... probably the only way to play the music and also keep the video from getting copyright, too🤣. Oh I bet that would be annoying though. Maybe if it was really low🤣 or maybe not, the more I think about it, the worse of an idea it seems to be...

      @@DaveRat When I used to mix (small venues) I'd go for 100dBA at the console as that is the OSHA 2 hour exposure limit. I figured that was loud enough to be fun but not so loud as to be a problem (and if anybody wanted it louder just move closer to the stage). 103 in a big venue makes sense. ☺
