Watch the BBC first on iPlayer đ bbc.in/iPlayer-Home Did John Cooper Clarke really share a flat with a monkey? To be honest, sharing a flat with a monkey would be an improvement compared to most flatmates đ
Would I Lie To You is an award-winning comedy panel show. Host Rob Brydon and lightning-quick team captains David Mitchell and Lee Mack encourage their guests to tell the tallest of tales.

" Sometimes there are things in life that are a disappointment. But living with a monkey isn' t one of them. "
Great comedic Timing.
Maybe the best quote of the series =)
Words to live by.
@@NormanCollier-nf7nu I understand. But this remark is worth to be repeated a 100 times. Do it!
Yes, in the history of CZcams comments no one has ever quoted a line from a video. Grow up!@@NormanCollier-nf7nu
âWhat did he look like?â
âExquisiteâ
I died lmfao
I certainly laughed harder than I should have.
@@Star_Joker How hard should you have laughed, would you say?
@@alaron5698 it should've been a big smile and a little chuckle. I actually laughed like Joaquin Phoenix's Joker for about 2-3 seconds. It was quick, but hard.
@@Star_Joker no murders were involved, though I take it?
As if anyone needed this confirmed, I met JCC backstage at his gig in Galashiels a few years back and he was even nicer of a man than you imagine him to be. A total gentleman. A living legend, glad heâs still appreciated and on these shows.
That's so good to hear. Legend.
Can concur. I met him this week recording a show and he was incredibly kind. The coolest guy I have ever met.
Would loved to meet him, he seems like one of those down to earth intelligent cool people that dont try to be so. Unlike a lot of people on tv
@@nez9751 He absolutely is. A true gent and extremely funny man.
You lucky bugger.
What a wonderful pairing of guests to have someone like him so descriptive and poetic with his words, and on the other side someone visually impaired, who most likely appreciated the viviv story telling.
Good point
Yeah, of all of the panellists that he (Chris McCausland) had been paired with, this one one that I think I saw the most fun he had. Usually, he'd be looking a little blue and confused. But not a second of John Cooper Clarke's wordings did he looked as such.
Why would he appreciate it more than the other guests? Were they provided a movie version of the story to watch?
@@Leto_0 only in a way. Body language ,facial expressions, even clothing add to any storytelling. Since that visual component is lost to Chris you might say he got less out of the story. But JCCâs unique command of the English language paired with the fact JCC isnât very animated and wears dark sunglasses( which hides his eyes completely) means Chris is getting close to the same experience as the others. But even then Judy Love makes the point; out of everyone, who LOOKS like they lived with monkey?
@@Leto_0he wouldn't. He would appreciate other guests less
âBut living with a monkey isnât one of themâ not what I thought he was going to say lol
"He didn't want to leave his precious pal with any old schmuck"
âAs if tâwere a cat.â
In the pub they met Bob Mortimer with his sick owl.
And his cat with three broken ankles.

I come back to this video time and time again just to hear john says "UnGAINly HeaP"
This man is such a wonderful poet
If this had been Bob Mortimer, he would have given him a cushion to lie on and fed him 'monkey nourishment'.
It would be his friend's monkey, Donald Potatoe-Sack.
Monkey nourishment! :)
@@cherylrhodes1925 You're right, I've altered it to the correct version!
They only do that for owls ...
Would he probably name the monkey 'Davis'?
He did not need to say anything after "I shared a flat with a monkey" and we would know it was true.
Yep, it's one of those "so preposterous it just has to be true" type.
After sharing a flat with arch German singer, Warhol Superstar and general counter-culture icon Nico, I suppose a monkey was a walk in the park
"tree for a walk." đ
I love JCC. For 5 years, he picked up his weekly copy of The Spectator from me. Despite his twang, he resides in Essex now and is extremely well loved.
Did not think anyone could beat Bob Mortimer's stories but this really did. I knew immediately it was true.
charles dance had a story of a chimp coming to his house for tea
i'm sorry, this story is good, but nowhere near thief and shrubbery good.
Yah except with Bobâs all the details are so disconnected and implausible that you think it has to be a lie. Here they are so colorful and fascinating but still make total sense that you think thereâs no way someone could have this vivid and consistent an imagination. They are different sides of the same coin
@@googlygoo9472 it's AS GOOD as "Theft And Shrubbery". It's a tie. "We do beg your pardon..."
Also the whole "Inspector Bytheway" - "DAD!" part from the Gulf Stream Halloween Mask story is hilarious, even though that part is Lee. Amazing improvisation.
What a story! And of course what a storyteller!
You could tell it was true when he quickly back-peddled to their first encounter. Truly recalling something, it doesn't always come back in sequential order, especially something that long ago.
I thought it was only Bob Mortimer who told stories like this.
When they started saying "Who of us can you imagine living with a monkey" or whatever I was like "Excepting Bob Mortimer? Only JCC."
Exactly my thoughts đ
there werent any names named
I don't know - Henning Wehn, James Acaster, Raj Bisram, Rhod Gilbert, and Greg Davies (to name a few!) have told some wild stories in their times on this show.
Didn't Charles Dance once had a chimpanzee over for tea?
I'm not British, and I've only recently found this show and started to binge it. John is an instant favourite. I also like David and Bob.
I started about 5 years ago with this , and Q.I. , 8 out of 10 cats ...and a few others I got so tired of US TV
"Monkey Wrench" - the sort of amazingly witty reply I usually come up with ....... on the way home.
Jonny is a national treasure. Heâs sharper than a razor and lyrically dwarfs those around him.
"Did the monkey know any tricks?" I'd say renting a flat is a pretty good trick for an animal
Depending on the landlord, it can be a decent trick for a human.
If it were a Bob Mortimer story, the monkey would definitely not be simply called Charlie.
Finally, some real competition for Bob Mortimer.
Watched this earlier I haven't laughed so much in ages ,everyone who takes part is funny .
"Monkey wrench" lmao đ€Łđ€Łđ€Ł
The man's a legend so naturally funny
I would like to listen for hours and days the life story of this man. What a brilliant narrator, and what an interesting life. ("He is exquisite")
I'm reading his autobiography at the moment. It's very entertaining. You can here his voice as you read it. That slow lugubrious style.
His audiobook is On audible with him narrating it and it is very good , I wanna be yours, itâs called
Seeing John Cooper Clarke in the flesh, live, in the next couple of weeks for the first time. Only four or five decades late. Looking forward to it. EDIT: (two weeks later) Saw JCC live tonight and what a dude! Talk about STAR presence for such a tiny, wiry little bloke. Punchy poems and funny as f**k. RECOMMENDED!! And of course he ended, ss he must, with the complete I Want To Be Yours! :)
I've seen him perform twice, and he is brilliant.
An ungainly heap hahahah
Funniest thing about this clip is "They got me rumbled"

I was so disappointed that this was true. That made it masterful comic storytelling from an eccentric character's life. But if he'd been making it up on the fly, that would have been off-the-charts genius.
Yah it would have been on of the most thorough, complete, and creative lies/story telling I would have ever heard
If it's too good to be false, it probably is true.
Great storyteller
JCC đ€Łđđ»

Loving this show here in America.
I'm a Brit living in the US, and I can't get my American friends to watch Wilty. I keep telling them, but they never do.
What!? LET ME AT EM!
@@cricketjam - I wish. But it's their loss. Some things I don't recommend because I don't think they'll get them, but I know from watching reaction channels that Americans do love this show. Not too many cultural references that understandably go over your heads.
@@renejean2523 Maybe the show needs more guns.
@@cricketjam - That would actually attract a lot of people that I know, sadly. I don't see the appeal at all.
Epic
Awe! Can only imagineđ
Of course he did. Next to Bob Mortimer he's a favourite!
There are some guests who just enjoy telling a funny story and offer up all the details voluntarily, which youâd never do if you were telling a lie. I think JCC is still an outstanding guest, but the ones I enjoy the most are those who deliberately make it as difficult as possible for the other side to work out whether the story is true or false. Rhod Gilbert, Bob Mortimer, Richard Osman and Miles Jupp are good examples in my opinion. They just seem to have a good knack for the game :)
How fun would be that! To share a flat with a monkey, imagine that adventure! :))
I work with monkeys. Sharing a flat with one would be one of the worst possible living experiences you could have.
That would be a nightmare.

Pardon me, I'm a child of the 70s when studio sets were just plain with maybe a few leather chairs that would swivel, but can anyone explain why on earth the studio set is the way it is. The big 'O' shapes behind Mack and Mitchell. The bizarre colours. The strange and pointless ridge on the lumps they all sit behind. I do realise it doesn't matter but in my day there's be a reason for things. I'm suspecting no one anywhere knows or indeed cares. Anyway....always loved this show. I just wish they were on a plain set with some comfy chairs rather than having to look at all that clart.
