I really like the mechanics of ball lightning. Its basically a burn spell but your opponent can try to block the spell with creatures
Great design imo also really fun with unearth effects
if you played hearthstone it reminds alot of leeroy jenkins which is pretty much a burn spell printed on a haste creature

Defeating an opponent with the power of balls has never been so efficient since the introduction of Unearth to Modern.
I think the deck needs to be named Balls to the Face in honor of Ball Lightning.

Seems worth it.
no ramp means it won't happen till turn 5 which seems slow and there is that artifact that counters spells that don't use mana, and with relying on 1 card for the cascade means if its in your opening hand you will be thoughtsiezed.

@@fasdaVT beanstalk wurm for ramp, and you could run the land cycling creatures from LotR for aggressive mulligans looking for vortex in opening hand
@@fasdaVT Grabby Giant and Beanstalk Wurm get you ramp. Force of Vigor in the SB deals with that artifact.
And Magma Opus-likes can both be a ramp and fodder for Force of negation

55 cards, let’s brew it, that’s the fastest way I can figure to get mana fixing for the vortex and then whichever ball lightning, anyone have a way to get the vortex?
Honestly so invested in this now, unfortunately my best guess is probably just gonna have to be aggressive mulliganing maybe down to 5 or even 4 in a worst case scenario? I've been looking into stuff with transmute as in a pinch, if you're able to survive one turn and have enough mana to play vortex then a creature to combo off, it could be useful, but really not finding anything relevant. Also struggling to find any dedicated tutors etc. I don't really play modern much but this is fun to brainstorm!

@@georgetimlin7863 yea, mulliganing hard might be the answer, the 12 land cycling creatures let you possibly keep some 1 land hands if you have the enchantment and a “ball lightning”

Make sure you add on a few leyline of punishment. In addition to countering any and all fog effects, you can potentially get them for free if they're in your opening hand.

The Master, Multiplied is the perfect commander for Ball Lightning tbh
Monstrous vortex being printed at uncommon is a perfect encapsulation of post 2019 power spiking. I stopped playing shortly after gatecrash released. My main format had been standard, but i had switched to commander around 2011-2012. I got back into the game in January 2020 and was blown away at the power level of newer card sets being printed. The craziest part is that if this card was printed in 2011, it'd be a mythic rare and in 2024 its just a random uncommon.
Because in 2011, rarity wasn't about power; it was about complexity.

Well, i play a Blightning Elemental deck that works pretty well. And it's fun as hell.
You can also play ground breaker or the lifelinking ball lightning at 4mana

Instead of relying on a cmc 4 card that has to be in play first, just play birds of paradise or ignoble hierarch turn 1, ball lightning or groundbreaker turn 2, then another groundbreaker/ ball lightning and an Unearth on turn 3. If they’ve played 2 fetchlands or a shock land, they’re now dead. The cmc 4 slot should be a collected company

I mean, I dunno that anyone plays Seismic Wave outside of people with limited Arena card collections or something, but it does technically do the job.
Marrow Shards. It even costs phyrexian mana, so you can still cast it when tapped out.
steal leaf champion also works
Excellent backup plan if you’re not able to take out the opponent in one swing, in some unlikely occasion.
Pugnacious Hammerskull probably works better.
This was already possible with Wild Pair and Greebelt Rampager (though Wild Pair is six mana)
