I have a 1990 Blazer that I bought fresh out of high school. She's been my daily driver for 24 years. 610,000 miles on the original engine and still strong. 100k+miles pulling a trailer. She's been to ver 100 concerts and I wouldn't trade her for the world.

@@AlejandroP1980s the price on broncos is being artificially inflated and out of reasonable price for most. The tahoe is ifs, if your more commuter miles then truck use then thats the better truck. Tahoes are also cheaper then k5s right now, more bang for your buck in a sense. But if your like me, use it offroad and haul motorcycles/parts all the time the k5 with its solid axle and removable top are huge selling points.

@ConcealCarryProtect; Holy fucking shit, you just nailed this thing. This might be the most underrated comment I’ve seen on an RCR. Up here in my hillbilly af corner of the Rockies, that’s 110% of C5 owners and is what I expected to hear about and see when I clicked on this vid, not Mr. GreenDay who owns it. This points out how crazy the cultural differences between PA and the Rocky Mountain states are. The Tacoma vid was the next biggest disconnect for me. That dude/culture is nothing like Tacoma owners I recognize out here.

Circa 1995... whilst driving my 88 Hyundai Excel GL during rush hour as the sun was setting, I was following some Cadillac and could see up ahead the light was green. All of the sudden, the Caddy jumps into the left lane, used only for U Turns at that location and sitting in the road ahead of me only a short distance was a K5 Blazer. As I slammed my breaks, the Blazer sat there. I’m sliding... sliding... shitty car brakes locked up... SLAM!!! Front end of my car is in my lap. Tiny dent in the Blazer bumper. Engine bay has destroyed the battery, the antifreeze and the window washer fluid unleashing an unholy mix of fluids into the road. The Blazer is fine. She saw me coming and braced for impact and barely received a scratch. My shitty Hyundai (never do a review of that junker) was totaled. Cop at the scene, seeing no one was injured, didn’t even write me a ticket. Caddy drove off. Blazer lady was more concerned about me. I was fine. Then... my dad drives by. Sees my car. Turns around. Takes me home. K5 Blazer 1, 1988 Hyundai Excel GL 0.

I'm a squrebody nerd and LOVE this truck!
FYI this generation of GM truck is commonly referred to as the "squarebody" by truck nerds.
This is one CLEAN K5. I could do w/out the sunroofs or the exhaust tips, and the 4WD def needs to work, but other than that his thing is SWEEEEEET. My dad had a 78 K5 when I was a little kid, and that thing was a tank. It was also a rotted out PO at that time (thanks New England!) but I remember him offroading it or crashing through huge snow piles. I always wanted one. Came close when I was in high school, I bought a beater 73K10 and fixed it up. Wish I had kept it :( They were a dime a dozen when I was in high school (90's kid), it wasn't till later the value started shooting up.
I think they're worth the money though, as these trucks will literally last longer than their owners, providing one can keep the body rot at bay. As far as the transmissions, he doesn't specify if these are pro rebuilds, or junkyard transmissions. If they're from the JY, they can be picked up for a few hundred bucks. If they're pro rebuilds, he needs a new tranny guy.
These don't have steering racks; the steering box turns a pitman arm which acts on a drag link which turns the drivers wheel, and the passenger wheel is connected to the driver's wheel via a long tie rod. If the ball joints in that long tie rod get worn, the wheels start to move in slightly different directions and the damn thing can be nearly uncontrollable. It happened to my K10. Crossover steering is a very popular mod on these.
The rear axle is 1.5" narrower per side than the front. My truck came with wider wheels on the rear to even it out. Some mud truck guys used to say the different tracks were helpful in the mud, as the rear tires followed in slightly narrower ruts and got more "bite". I dunno, to me it looks goofy. Swap in a 3/4 or 1ton rear axle from the same generation van, the rear axle is wider than the pickups and will match the front track.
To see a NASTY K5, check out BJ Balwin's. Though, there's not much K5 left other than the body and a section of the original chassis.

I have an assignment in graphic design school where we have to make cover art for a book. I had no idea what to make it for so my teacher recommended On the Road since he knew I'm a car guy. Reading and loving it now and just got the Kerouac reference at the start of the video!

This generation of Chevy trucks is, without question, my favorite. Coincidentally it's also the precise cross-section of the availability of luxury features like power windows/locks/seats, air con with the last bastion of traditional features like butterfly windows, manual transmission availability even in the utility bodies (allegedly foreign markets and fleet sales could defy this) fully metal construction, etc. A 1970s platform updated to the 1990s. The pickups had already taken the newer, modernized form by the late 80s, but the Blazer, Suburban, and Heavy-Duty pickups stayed with this body style until '91, delicious anachronisms of 70s zeitgeist in the era of the Taurus and the design imperative that everything had to start looking like it was excreted from some terrible orifice. Seeing a car like this on the road is like getting back small-portrait notes in your change. "Ah" you think, "real money." Before the change that set everything on its ear. Before "they" ruined it.

You are right about foreign markets, the Silverado actually retained a manual transmission in the Mexican market until 2013 (however it was only on the V6 base model)

Some day I would like to swap in the 4+low+OD box that got into the last regular USDM stickshift trucks. And a Gear Vendors De Normanville overdrive as well so I can have a Mad Max-style knob on the stick, 24 total speeds.

Mine was originally bought and used to tow a fifth wheel. For the first 14, come to find out, the dealership hadn't actually connected up the heavy duty cooler that was installed so they were all warranty repairs within the first 50k miles. Then the 15th was my doing after I bought it at 65k, did the transmission service with the wrong filter and blew it up on a long highway pull.

I had a 79 K5. Champagne gold farm truck with a lift kit much like this one. I could make moves on the sheer force of ugly with that beast. No running boards. I'm 6'0" and the door handle was at eye level. I used the door pull and steering wheel to vault myself inside. It was wonderful. There's nothing - NOTHING! - more liberating than owning a truck that you love but at the same time don't give a crap about. I didn't polish the fenders. The interior was musty and the floorboards had a few holes. I needed a daily for living in the Vail Valley and this monster was PERFECT.

You can literally back up into a normal car with a K5, destroy/total the other car, and only have a small dent on your bumper... I mean, that's what i heard.
Best car for a young man.

An '89 model hit my '85 Escort, from a standing stop, while I was passing in front of it at a two-way stop, on the left rear quarter-panel, spun the car about 200 degrees, the right rear wheel rim hit the concrete curb, popped it over that after chipping the concrete and bending the rim, leaving the car almost completely off the street. I was amazed then, and now, that the car didn't flip. Did absolutely nothing to the K5's bumper. I still remember that guy's name, and I've hated Blazers ever since.
