Thank you! This went from me thinking i would be out there for hours, to being able to do it on my lunchbreak 😊
Thank you so much for this video! Me and my grandfather are building an 88 Silverado 1500, and we disassembled both rear drums, without taking pictures.... Your video was extremely helpful! Thank you again!
This is a really nice demo sir. Well done and thank you. Blessings upon your house.
I have always HATED drum brakes! Last job was on a "68 Plymouth Valiant. I was so inexperienced. I got the new shoes on, after a difficult tear down, and could NOT get the drum back on the first side. I pounded and pounded just short of breaking anything. I cussed and swore more then any soldier I have ever met. After a consultation with my father-in-law, he came to the house to assist. Being a man with credible wrenching skills he quickly understood the error of my way and taught me that there was a long shoe and a short shoe. I had no prior knowledge of such an idea and I never made any visual connection when pulling shoes out of the box. I simply grabbed two shoes and wrestled all the springs and stuff back onto the backing plate. Thanks again.
Im so happy I found a youtuber that works on my year range of chevy 1500. I have a 91 though. Please keep making videos!! and maybe put all the 1988-1998 chevy videos in one playlist.
this is by far the best, concise, and clear "how to" video on the silverado drum replacement process. Thanks for putting in the time and work for these vids!
Plopping pop phone
..not just the Silverado, which was the top trim level...the Cheyenne, W/T, Scottsdale as well..this was before Chevrolet started that nonsense of calling them all "Silverados"...
Thank you so much for this. I fought with the 10" brakes on my 98 for so long.
as a mechanical and electrical troubleshooter this is 1 of the best video's on the net precise and to the point very well explained and perform!!!
Thanks for making this video. I was struggling with my 97 Sierra brakes. Huge help!
i replace the brks shoes last year and as i check the wear off on the pads i realized i had made an 😦 error of putting backwards the parking brk shoes . thnk for your video .👍
Thank you for breaking a daunting task into simple steps. I ll be doing my truck this has given me confidence that i ll be able to do my own Thank you
You never showed how to put secondary part of brake shoe on
Replacing everything in the back of my 89 Silverado today. This video was a big help. A few tips which I wouldn't have thought of. Thanks.
The same thing happened to me with the wheel cylinders! It is my own fault, I should have looked closer, I ordered the right part# but they were boxed wrong so now I have to do it all over again, thanks for the tips.
just knocked mine out in 45 mins thanks to this video ... appreciate it bro
thanks, for the step by step of how to hook the brake springs. This vehicle is about the closest if found so far to match
my 88 Buick Electra (trim level park avenue) rear brake shoe spring set up the only difference I can see is the spring kit I have
has the top tension spring going to a little short wire/rod that's only couple inches long, special bent, to go from middle shoe hole
( just above the hold down nail) to the hole again in the shoe plating only near the top / larger hole this time. The spring hooks to that.
So that make's this video the closes I have found. And all the info pertains to mine pretty much. So I'm going to try putting on the springs pre assembled this should solve why I couldn't figure out how to hook that middle spring, that hooks on the back side. Great Video!
Guy is super at explaining it. Here in Iowa most of the yanks pull complete rear end. Makes brakes much easier 2 install
Thank You! This is THE VIDEO for Back Rear Drum Brakes! PERIOD!
Bro!!!!! This is video is so good!!!! I really needed this information. Thank you for passing this on
This is the only video I could find that had the exact same brakes as my 1999 Chevy Tahoe. On mine, the emergency brake cable was a huge pain in the ass to remove and install. The springs on them were extremely strong and hard to compress. I’m a mechanic and it was still a pain. Thanks for taking the time to make and post this video. It helped a lot.
How did you manage to do it im having the same Situation
Thanks so much for the video, I've watched others but yours was the must concise. 1997 k-1500 Z71
But did you solve the squishy brakes?
Again...this is the best and for most in-depth video. 2 Thumbs up!!!
thanks very informative. just a FYI; the camera positions resulted in the camera being blocked by your head arms and hands on multiple occasions slightly frustrating for the viewer. thanks!
Everytime i do brakes i fight with the springs. Your video is a blessing. I hate drum brakes but after this ill never struggle with drum brakes again. You actually make it look so eazy and fast.. I am doing brake on a 96 chevy k 1500 it was awful today. I look forward to doing this tomorrow i liked your channel and subscribed
It looked so easy and fast cause it was probably edited several times. Especially that e brake cable highly doubt that was put on first try. Very good tutorial no doubt but I'd say there was editing involved
Awesome! Thanks for the video. Yes drum brakes are a pain and every manufacturer is slightly different.
Best video on CZcams! Thanks for the help
great video. i fought that damn top tension spring for a good hr trying to put it in last!!!
Man, thank you so much for this!!!
Thank God i found this video. Tyvm!!!
Well detailed video, wish there were more how to videos like yours, amazing !!
If you only need to take the brake cylinder out, you just need to loosen the two bolts and the brake line attached and then spread the pads a bit and pull it out.
Thanks for posting this very helpful
Great how to video !! Very clear and slow paced where i could keep up awsume!!!
You are the man. Thankyou. Bless you
Great job
Man your video is great we doing an 89 Silverado half ton furr by four some new messed with lugs n all busted wheel went down road n everything gone or busted up got figure how goes on this video is very helpful
Good how to video I would recommend safety glasses when doing this job these spring have alot of stored energy and also brake fluid under extreme pressure just my 2 cents
awesome video !!! nice step by step instructions!!!!
nice view of the back of his head.
Great video!
Thanks it was nice and a very big help
As always, great job Russell!
Great video man 👍
Very good video, thank you for taking the time to making it and posting it thank you very much again it was very useful to me.
Good video, if the adjustment lever spring pops off, it's not to bad getting it back on without removing the shoes. Also when disassembled check for wear groves in the backing plate, these get there shoes hung up in the grooves locking the brake on.
Thank you!!!
Did anyone else notice he didn’t pick his pliers up.? Lol good video it helped a lot thanks
I tried the pre-assemble method you used. I could not keep the unit together like that when maneuvering it into place. . .
Great video, except... how the heck do you get the emergency brake cable reconnected because there’s no way that my spring will compress with a little screw driver and pull the cable back on? Suggestions? Other than this, this is a fantastic guide. Thank you.
Please help me I’m trying to replace my brothers drum brakes on his 98 Chevy Silverado. The spring on the e brake is too tense to pull up to reinstall the e-brake cord like you did. The e brake is off. What do I need to do? Is there a place to adjust the ebrake to loosen it for reinstall?
Thank you for this video, otherwise, I would've lost the last bit of remaining hair on my head.
Great explanation and video of replacing the rear brakes. Just one issue, when you are doing the job, please have someone else video you. THE MOST IMPORTANT PARTS HAVE YOUR HEAD IN THE WAY>>LOL.. Bu other than that I agree with everyone who has previously posted comments. BY the way even with the complaint. I liked and subscribed to you.
There's a easier way to adjust the brakes by start up the engine put in reverse back up several time until the brakes drum stop spinning don't forget to put a couple lugs on each drum to retain them from going off. Self adjusting automatic. Lerron Moses
You mean like, back up and break, back up and break a couple of times?
Thank you, sir. These instructions helped waaay more than the Haynes manual did.
Haynes manuals have a knack of NEVER having a close-up or a picture of what you critically need to see, as in positioning, etc., OR, they have a generic picture that is NOT exactly on the model the manual covers or what you are working on...
How long is the spring to the lever that goes over the adjuster wheel? I cant get mine to stay in that position used all other springs but that one just seems to short and it's bring it down😕
I saw about 2/3 of what you did, but I am wanting to change the cylinder which you did off camera. No big deal I can do that although I was trying to figure out if I can do so without disassembling the brake shoes - still do not know so I guess I will just tear into it
You are aware that most of the time your head blocks the view. Still video very helpful
so what you're saying is you got the wheel cylinder for the 11 inch brakes not the 10 inch. It is a pain in the ass but if the small white spring that keeps the metal tab that locks the adjuster wheel comes loose take the tab off the pin then put the white spring back into the slot in the tab then put the tab back on the pin then pivot it back into place rather than disassemble the whole thing . You can put your retainer springs on both sides before you put the blue spring on the bottom - - after its all assembled pull the bottom of the shoe out of the retainer on both sides at the bottom put the blue spring in place then put the back shoe back into its slot in the retainer first (the one the E-brake is attached to it) then simply pull the other shoe out at the bottom til it too slides into its slot then roll or push the spring into its slot. One other thing some might find helpful you can use a big C clamp or one of those trigger and slide clamps used in woodworking (one of the smaller one handed type ones) to pin the shoe to the backing plate when putting the retainer spring and post on that way it doesn't move around on you when you are using both hands to try to put the spring with the slot cap back on the pin. I also used a cut off wheel on my die grinder to put a groove about 3 teeth in on both sides of a set of plyers this crates a rounded groove that holds the slot cap on the the retainer spring better - - good luck , hope some of this helps
And they comment about the comment pertaining to telling why there’s not enough information on that. To describe why I like it
Please do a video on how to adjust park/emergency brake on 1988-1998 Chevy trucks.
Thank you for the helpful video! It was very clear and concise, I definitely feel more confident going into replacing my drums in my 94. And don't let all these assholes in the comments get to you, most of them probably don't know diddly and couldn't even change a battery
How do you adjust the emergency brake on those drums?
Did you leave the parking brake cables in hooked?
Thanks. Yes, good to know time saver. Seems like most videos on here are for GM11 inch rear drum brakes vs. the GM 10 inch rear drum brakes in your video. 11 inch drum brakes have six lug hubs and 10 have five lug hubs? In addition to the wheel cylinders being different, the spring hardware and layout is quite different for each size.
Seems I missed it or you skipped part about removing parking brake lever from old shoe and installing to new show? I had trouble with removing the retaining clip from pin and temporarily lost (lost time looking) the spring washer on the pivot pin.
They are a one time use anyways. Just buy a maintenance hardware pack, it'll save you some stress if you lose or brake em in the future.
Six lug hubs on my 98 with 10" drums
Did you paint the drum and inside parts and what type of paint did you use?
How do you compress the spring & remove the eBrake at (4:41?
Only problem with all the grease you put on there is it attracts dust. You don't want to attract dust at all in your brake drums. Less than a drop of silicone one either side of the wheel cylinder and some on either end of the forks adjusting it. The video was well done other than all the grease.
would this work for a 86 k1500
Is the brake system on a 2wd the same as a 4wd?
Does this also work for a C1500?
Yes it will I used on my c1500
Fork orientation? Theres a big and little side on one side of fork
Next time take hat of couldn't see you how you removed the blue spring and installed it your hat block it
Those self adjusters are Mickey Mouse. Sometimes they don't work & the piston eventually comes out of the wheel cylinder enough to leak when the pads wear. I recommend antiseize on the self adjuster threads & gear.
Ok if it works.
A drill instructor would have turned pale as a ghost if they heard the language I used doing this.
That was passenger-side rear.
Is the format reversed for the driver-side rear?
I mean; with the parking brake lever mounted on the right side?
I'm trying to figure that out right now! My driver side fell apart when I removed the drum. So was it reversed?
@@sexysexyjulian6758 I don't recall jobs that were miserable to pull off.
Sorry.
@SexySexyJulian the look of it was backwards from this.
Everything on the left ; here; is on the right ; on driver side while facing the hub.
Notice on end of video you accidentally left brake adjust or bracket out of slot and installed drum. Your brakes may not be auto adjusting correctly.
To bad I couldn’t see thru ur head to see the e brake csble attachment witch is the problem I’m having. Thanks
He shows you how to attach it later on it the vehicle. You can see pretty clearly then
I hate drum brakes did them on my 1970 Firebird. It was frustrating
22:22..that shiny part of flat sheet metal that is part of the self-adjuster, the one that fits on the roll pin in the brake shoe...on mine, when I place it on the roll pin on the new shoes, the tab that is supposed to fit in the end of the adjuster fork, it is not long enough to reach the adjuster fork, so I cannot fit it under it, to hold the adjuster upright...anybody else have this problem? is it maybe the Chinese brake shoes are mis-made, the roll pin in the wrong place?...I cannot figure this out. The self-adjuster definitely won't work properly(or at all) because of it...any ideas? Unfortunately, Chinese brake shoes and pads seem to be all you can get these days..regardless of brand, or regardless of what store you go to...the wheel cylinders were Chinese as well...
You forgot the install on the e brake braket! Damn it dude..
On my 89 my emergency cable has fluid coming through it
why is it upside down ???
Who pulls an axle shaft to do drum brake's? I guess you never have done brakes on a one ton Chevy truck .
Hey lighten up pop's. Dude is just trying 2help us out! Heck u sweatin an axle being pulled well here in Iowa these yanks pull entire rear end.
@@waynewilliams5802 I'm a S.A.E. certified brake technician. Running my own shop for the last 40 years.
I need the driver side
What is the purpose of the washer that’s on the adjuster? I noticed it has to be installed so that the notch and washer are set correctly. My real question is if the washer was installed or turned around so that the notch is not seating together what would happen?
Thanks, Steve
You didnt show anything but your shoulder
It was good but you are not telling us why, you are putting the springs the way you are showing them, as well as which brake shoes is the front and rear
I like the way you explain it, but sadly, you keep putting your body and head between the camera and the parts you are working on.
Well I must’ve fucked something up or I should’ve replaced those wheel cylinders too because I have no rear brakes now
Must be the abs module i had to bypass mine because it was blocking fluid from reaching the rear
Your adjuster's not going to work. You didn't position the adjuster lever correctly. At 24:12, right before you put the drum back on, the adjuster isn't sitting behind the fork. It's sitting on the fork's end. You had it correct earlier, but at 22:40 when you pried at it and it popped out of the fork, you tried to set it back in place but didn't go behind the fork.
I looks easier to do a 3500 cause the hub isn’t in the way
Yours are totally upside down and backwards from my 1998 tahoe. The self adjuster dial is on the bottom. Mine are 11.15" drum brakes measured inside the drum. Why would Chevy radically change their drum brake design and put the self adjuster dial right next to the cylinder? Really strange.
Check out this video on you tube if you want to see what is normal. **** Drum Brake Overview (Dana 80 Passenger Side) *****
To bad u not close to here
The first 5 minutes is a waste of time
You should learn how to use your camera!! Can’t see half of what your talking about!
I have an idea...go watch someone else's video that is up to your standard!
uh huh .. okay .. now I'm gonna .. what if I told you .. uh huh okay hmmm...... alright
Uses a drill rather than an impact wrench to loosen the lug nuts and then calls a brake drum a "Rotor" within 1:38 minutes. Curiosity is the only reason for watching further.
Not a drill and so what he called it the wrong part
New wheel cylinder was wrong one ??? WHY ? Bore, They are the same. He said , too tight! The cylinders are shorter [left to right] for the STANDARD CAB TRUCKS!!! Longer for the EXTENDED CAB TRUCKS. Part numbers are different by one number.
I HATE messing with drum brakes !!!Such a shit design.
"yes,that's a brand new rotor.."
NO,it's a brand new BRAKE DRUM ...
Had to quit watching right then...
