I imagine that for the Deaf community, the pandemic was even more of a nightmare for them.
Not everybody knows sign language and being able to read lips might have been their only way to understand some people easily.
Masks are horrible for autistics, it's hard enough to read facial expressions without something covering 3/4 of someone's face
Thats me. Not part of the Deaf community but very hard of hearing and god it sucked. I hated not reading people's facial expressions and not lip reading.
There was one person at work that I couldn't hear and was wearing a mask, so I leaned in to listen and they stepped back. Like m8, I'm at my wits fucking end trying to understand everyone that wears a goddamn mask. As soon as the restrictions lifted, I took mine off.
Most of the times when I can't hear anyone at work and say 'excuse me?', they lower their mask anyway to make themselves understood... So whats the point if you lower it every time to be understandable to others? Just don't wear it lol
i’m not even deaf but I have auditory processing disorder, so I have a really hard time deciphering speech when i’m not allowed visual cues to differentiate between M/N and B/V/P/D
it must have been awful
I am hard-of- hearing and it's been difficult to fully understand people... Honestly, I don't even know sign language, it wasn't offered to me growing up and no one really taught it or even know about it in my small town in Canada
@@WolfTitan99 have you tried saying, “sorry I can’t hear too well can you speak up please?” Instead of leaning into someone’s personal space without saying anything. I guarantee if you ask if they can speak up and gesture at your ear, I’m certain they’ll understand and be willing to lean in and speak louder too
There's this manga called "New Normal" that's set in a decades-long pandemic-stricken world and wearing masks has become such a norm that removing it feels like being naked/exposed. It has really nice story and art too!
Who’s the author????
@@abelerculano7565 Akito Aihara, found it on Mangakakalot.
Based.
Okay, that's very interesting. I've honestly thought of that. But I will be clear: outside of your home and your regular co-horts, loved ones there, wear masks as much as possible going out now, soon, and in the near future, so we don't need to later like this fascinating media you describe.
@@ChrisPoindexter98 You do realise that by doing that you are literally making that happen? It creates the culture they are talking about, maybe minus the actual virus of the story.
Most people in Japan do still wear masks for their own personal reasons-although, *some* people (mostly children, teens and young adults) are strongly against showing their faces. Variably, it could be due to psychological factors, like depression and self-consciousness, or just to protect their health. The reason differs from person to person, but I wish that those people would feel more proud to present their appearance-if the circumstances deem safe for them to do so.
Sad reality is at this time 95% of people wearing a mask aren't wearing it because they are sick or recently were sick. Making it socially acceptable to the level japan has will cause long term issues.
Why "sadly" its their choice and i also like wearing them now, if people can't see my face i feel a sense of accomplishment, so i get where they are coming from.
@@R1L1. Sadly because they aren't comfortable with themselves as they're afraid from judgement from others on there appearance.
I used to wear a mask just too hide my face, until one day, I was looking and looking and looking at myself and randomly I started to feel proud of my looks and not embarrassed, since then I have been a lot more confident.
The reason why I like wearing mask is just how convenient it is since I don't need to use make up and need more prep time to go out as nose down my face is covered. Also it's kind of embarrassing when you accidentally fall asleep on the train and your mouth accidentally opens when you don't wear a mask
The combination of virtual zoom classes and masks is gonna have lasting effects on the poor elementary and middle school aged kids. They're struggling enough with socialization and self esteem with social media. It's honestly pretty heartbreaking to watch.
you think that's bad, kids are going to elementary school without the finger dexterity to learn to write, without the social skills to make friends.
All by design. They want the next generation so weak that they won't be able to resist what is coming.
The problems a next generation faces are caused by the previous one
@Buzás András because of things outside of both the parents and child's control. A mass pandemic. Not poor parenting. No one was ready for this. It isn't weak people. It's horrific circumstance
Couldn't agree more.
even as a college student here in japan i can attest that a lot of people, especially girls, seem to find it embarrassing to take off their masks around other people anymore. they say that they're shy about showing their face. it's really just sad people feel that way to be honest.
That’s crazy at my university in Dallas it’s hard to get some of these girls to stop being so confident💀

I'm a nurse. In our office, lots of teens and preteens continue to wear masks because they can hide embarrassing features, like acne under them. As a nurse, I don't mind wearing a mask all day since healthcare workers still have to do so. I've just gotten used to it.
When I finally visit Japan this January after a long hiatus, I'll wear one most of the time, esp since as a half-Japanese, I pass more easily wearing one, lol.
Damn you were silently judging those kids when you saw them lmao.
My local news channel here in the US actually still occasionally does a weekly report of new COVID cases. However it's such an afterthought that they spent only like several seconds on it and move on to the next story.

It’s wild that it’s still the third leading cause of death in the US but like we kinda just gave up.
@@gogomonstertruck wtf medical errors are number 3 behind heard disease and cancer. Plz stop the cap
@@gogomonstertruck It’s pretty sad, but if people are so insistent on killing themselves, what else can we do? They take pride in their own ignorance, and the few immunocompromised people I know switched to work from home to avoid them. It’s like the equivalent of the people who went ‘No seatbelts! We die like men!’ Back when the click it or ticket laws got implemented.
The nail that stands proud, gets the hammer.
If you teach kids that standing out is bad then then they want to be the same as every one else and any diffrence at all is magnified.
Don't know how it would sound to Japan but I always kind of thought what if someone is a screw instead of a nail you hammer in a screw and it breaks.

I recently felt so surreal about a day I was in Japan, Tokyo on a trip from Australia pre covid and I remember learning about people who wore masks if they were feeling unwell and I did because I was feeling unwell that day I just remember most of the locals were smiling when they saw or interacted with me because I was wearing a mask I guess they were happy because I was considerate others.i just look back on it and it's crazy when covid happened in Australia the mask wearing didn't bother me at all because I understood the reasoning of it due to learning that from Japan. Yet quite a few didn't get it in Aus 😛 even crazier I actually brought back some face masks back from Japan and used them during covid when I couldn't gain access to any. My mum and dad still go on about covid and keep on bringing it up as a subject to start a conversation with too.
I’m with Connor on that physical activity bit. I do wear a mask when out and about but only because I don’t want to be looked upon as “that disrespectful gaijin” but I get around by bicycle like most Japanese people and I pull it down when doing so. I couldn’t stand it otherwise. I have no idea how many others here can cycle with their mask on it just bewilders me.
Being immunocompromised, I will be wearing a mask for many many years to come. I haven’t even caught a cold or flu through the whole pandemic when I used to be sick a couple times a month. But I get weird looks and comments here in Canada because I wear an N95 mask wherever I go, inside, outside, anywhere there are people outside my tiny circle. Most people don’t wear them here anymore, and I accept that, so they should accept me wearing a mask cause how does it affect them in any way? Pfft!
psychological, especially before the pandemic, and now that its ending most people see the wearing of a mask in a public place as 1 of 2 things, either you want to commit crimes, or you have a transmittable disease and you should be inside, so you're always going to get weird looks from strangers, you look different and people always want to know everything.
Im gonna preface this saying I still wear a KF94 inside buildings and I'm a college student where it's even more of an inconvenience to wear one.
One thing I've been thinking about lately was that my experience with wearing a mask for the past 3 years now has led me to not be sick once. But is this kind of observation the same as someone who says they haven't worn a mask and never been sick? Ofc I know the physics behind a mask and the overall truth to them but I personally don't use my own experience as a way to justify my reasoning anymore since antimask ppl will just harp on the fact that their bodies are just built diff to get sick.
But coming from Texas, I do agree that I think people should just accept those that wear masks since we accept them who don't. As a golfer, it gets annoying cause you get "that crowd" of people when you walk into a club house with your mask on.
Anyway, TLDR; yeah I agree with you, I just think we shouldn't use our personal experience since I feel like that argument can be spun around in an annoying way
It is way more normalized than before though. I'm going to wear masks in stores in the winter for the foreseeable future
That's interesting because where I am in canada masks are still very much the norm and ur odder for not wearing them
@@alabamaslammer3921 Here in Ottawa, the majority of people don’t wear them anymore.

We still have to wear masks here in Hong Kong. But when I travelled to the uk to study, my friend told me that we could remove our masks. And can I just say, for the first day or so, my face just felt so naked and I always looked for my mask before I leave my room/after eating even tho I didn’t have one.
Also the colder weather makes me miss masks a little bc my breath kept my face so warm in winter lol
I used to to be uncomfortable taking it off too because we had to wear a mask for work the whole time. I never knew what people's faces looked like at work until it became lax and many people took their mask off. It was strange to see everyone's faces 😂. I started feeling self conscious too wtf. But then I took it off and just had it off everywhere. Feels normal again without a mask. I only wear it if I want and when the facility requires it.
Remember, Grandpa Nurgle loves you just the way you are. NEVER CHANGE.
Even I had a hard time going without masks again after almost 3 years. Not sure if I would’ve been able to go back had I been a few years younger.
0:55 There are also reports of kids at 4 years old not showing any signs of learning to talk, as seeing their parents faces would stimulate them to mimic sounds.
Living in the US I don’t think I’ve seen a mask in months, polar opposite of over there. People here were looking for any excuse not to wear masks. Only time I’ve worn one in 2022 was when I went to the doctors office which was still requiring them.
To be fair in the US the whole "mask" issue has been heavily politicized as well (just like almost every freaking social issue here...). I've heard a lot of instances where people got upset over other people wearing masks as if the mask is a symbol of their personal rights being violated or whatever the fuck
A friend of mine in 2020 said, “this is the only time in history where you can walk into a bank and a gun shop with a mask on and nobody bats an eye”
All this mask talk while majora's mask is sitting right in front of the camera lol.
Assuming it’s like the sunglasses effect, just gives you more confidence cause I know I’m definitely maskfishing
The masks definitely made me so much more self conscious and my social anxiety got a lot worse. It took me almost 2 years to realise that hiding behind the anonymity of the mask wherever I went didn’t give me freedom, it made me disconnect from other people, it made me lonely and anxious. So last fall I stopped wearing a mask altogether. I wouldn’t go to places that required a mask and I would let people know in advance that I wouldn’t wear one in meetings, making sure they were fine with it. And my mental health improved so much! This pandemic really was like a large scale psychological experiment on what happens when people are deprived of social interaction and simple things like seeing someone else’s face. And I think it’s so important we take this seriously and talk about it because we’re on the verge of a revolution in social interaction with VR and it’s crucial we understand what the lack of physical social interaction does to the human psyche in the long run.
I find the mask to be a great analogy for social anxiety. With the mask you know that people won't really know who you are which for people with severe social anxiety like me actually makes talking to others easier. But without the mask you become very self conscious of what facial expression you have towards others, and also the stupid symptom that comes with social anxiety where if you know someone can see and remember/judge your face in any way, it becomes way harder to speak
No thanks weirdo.
I'm always so buffled how the culture that gave me so many shows about striving to reach the impossible, trying to live freely, fighting for what you believe in, fighting for a better world... Is the same society that believes in order so strongly that being publicly spoken on your opinions is controversial..
everyone fantasize about something that they don't have, all the time
I've always hated smelling my friends taco breath or sweat pits. I get headaches when I smell something strong. Then pandemic hit, and I was like, "Why didn't I just do this before?" From then on, mask have been mandatory for me. I work at a mall and so many people either smell like ass or too much perfume or cologne.
Omg, so much easier to walk through the scented soap aisles now.
i feel this so much, my nose have always been strong at smelling. before pandemic my friends always talk either with a bad breath or droplet, which disgust me the most since i'm a kind of cleanfreak and ew wtf you speak and water coming out of your mouth. After pandemic i always had a pack of mask with me just to feel assured nothing with touch my face accidentally and i can always change if the mask became dirty.

In the U.S., people generally stopped wearing masks like a year (?) ago and most of them probably wouldn't start again even if we had a new, bad variant or even for flu season.
The only reason the US stopped (although I'll see the odd minority still wear 2) is because the media switched from 24/7 fear po rn on the flu to 24/7 fear po rn on r ussia. If that didn't happen you'd still be wearing your obedience muzzle without complaint.

Not seeing half of someone's face could seriously impact empathy development I'm sure. I think half of reading emotion is someone's mouth, you know? That could be super confusing for a subconscious if you're unsure how to read someone's expression 😕

I have heard many Japanese youtubers explain why Japan is so collectivist. Most theorize that it comes down to Japan not exactly being the most hospitable place to live, with few natural resources and being an epicenter for natural disasters. This forced the ancient indigenous people to be as cooperative as possible and only do things that are in the best interest of the group. This evolved to anyone that goes against the social norms be ostracized, as they are no longer useful to the group and it would be best for everyone to cut their losses. Jump ahead several millenia, and now we have today where those practices are still seen and are defacto legal requirements.

And by that time nearly a year and a half passed. That gym had the nerve to charge me for the annual rate too, well enough venting. Gyms are a scam anyways.
Although putting society as a whole first and having a more caring and empathetic mindset towards your fellow citizens has it´s many benefits. The mask situation is an example of how being a collective mindset society isn´t always a good thing. People are too scared to offend and aren´t able to make a personal decision as an adult. In consequence, this has affected how children feel about showing their faces. It´s paramount kids see other peoples faces. It´s part of their natural development.
Collectivism is never good. Collectivism is what has lead to largest mass murders in human history
We should give those kids cyanide too because that’s natural!
We should expose kids to the vacuum of space the vacuum of an explosion that was birthed 13,.77 billion years but you know it’s pretty natural too I’m sure when their eyes pop out in their body, pretty natural.
All-natural death!
We should show kids the disemboweling of you it’s pretty natural to have organs and it’s pretty natural to have places where the organs aren’t and it’s pretty natural to put them all in place as you want so what do you say ready for an all natural lesson!

Nothing is blocking her from using the barriers "properly". She just stood there in the gap instinctively.
I do get it. I do it too. Sounds just does not travel well through the barrier. It is just easier to communicate and get the job done through the gap.
@@porcorosso4330 yes but sound has moved around barriers so you just need to be louder! Not uncover your fucking bacteria Hole!
What did connor say that they censored?
never wore a mask in the gym during the pandemic and most people around me ddnt and i have yet to get covid 19
I personally try to keep a mask on when i can, but when it gets intense i take it off temporarily as im gasping for breath
@@ryankriller1931 sounds like you should quit living in fear of something that has a .02% chance of killing you
@@3398halofreak it’s just a mask, i dont really see anything wrong with wearing one when i can. I dont really mind other people not wearing on on the other hand though.
Also, 0.02% is still 0.02%. Is there a problem with wearing one? Personally it’s gotten comfortable to wear most of the time so i just keep one on.

Wearing mask is finally optional for both outdoors and indoors here in Philippines. Unfortunately, many still want mandatory wearing of mask indoors.
they deserve the chains they've come so accustom to.

Japan is so similar to Italy in so many ways
Honestly after having worn masks for a few years, my face/emotions feel so much more personal. Like, why would I give strangers a right to see my naked smile? It both sounds so ridiculous to me, but honestly I think I finally understand the whole culture of hiding one's emotions in public.
I feel that. A lot of threads are linking mask use to shyness, weakness, low self esteem, not being confident (et cetera) and tbf people can have many reasons without any of it being mutually exclusive. This is the first comment I see touch on a similar sentiment I've had sometimes. Just because I am out in public, doesn't mean everyone gets to be entitled to aspects of my appearance, ya know?
You guys are ridiculous, but hey you do you.
@@oceanplanet8160 Eh, a few years ago I would've agreed with you, but sometimes a world-altering event changes you in funny ways.
11:20 What they need to do is prioritize benefits/funding to kids, maybe.
The only reason I stopped wearing my mask at work after everyone else stopped is literally because I'M SICK OF PEOPLE MAKING ME REPEAT MYSELF BECAUSE IT MUFFLES WHAT I'M SAYING.
I was kinda avoiding the fact that growing up not seeing each other's faces are detrimental to children's growth.
Working all kinds of part time jobs they teach you to indicate your service smile with your eyes, but you can't force kids to do that.
Watch the anime trope of highschool thugs wearing masks get changed to not wearing masks
same in singapore lol

I hadn't worn a mask for almost half a year until a week ago when I got COVID. Really I don't pay much attention to it anymore, besides when someone who always wears a mask takes theirs off

I feel uncomfortable not wearing a mask when moving around at school. I do take it off when outside or sitting down, as it's kind of similar to being in a restaurant. If I have to go around the hallway, the mask goes on. If I have to move about the class, I still get the feeling something is wrong.
So on a side note some runners actually wear masks to restrict their breathing. I forget why though. lung strength I guess?
Oftentimes it’s to either train for high altitudes in which entails less oxygen or it’s to increase the VO2 max through the body’s adaptation.
@@wafongall2008 As you can tell I am not a runner. 😅 Thanks for the explanation.
right, but aren't those training masks specifically designed to restrict airflow? I'm skeptical that normal surgical masks/N95 can serve the same purpose
i see this in new normal manga when people getting excited just seeing lips
my take on this is, if i know covid is spreading at my workplace i will wear a FFP2, otherwise let's get back to live without them, tho i won't not wear one if i know i could protect myself with a mask from covid
5:26 anyone know what Conner said here?
He probably said "cunt"
c*nt?
As a student studying in Japan, I have quite a few classmates who won’t take off their masks no matter what you bribe them with (I’m included as well). A lot of us eat with our masks on (from the bottom), and keep it until we get home. And honestly, it seems that most people are wearing masks for purely personal reasons at this point. So I find it every unlikely that students in Japan suddenly change their view and strip themselves of their masks unless the government places restrictions on it. It’s a little saddening when everyone goes to a corner whenever they have to take of their mask for a breather in PE class and what not. But there’s nothing we could do to solve this issue, especially when we’re all uncomfortable without our masks on in public.
Just push yourself not to wear it. You'll get used to it and help others be confortable with it.
boys we know how to fix this, make a manga about it. when voter-chan reaches the top of the shonnen popularity polls we win.
I am home rn with a corona infection, because i didnt have to wear a mask at work anymore. i am in contact with so many people every day that it was probably inevitable. But no one talks about corona anymore so it isnt even in peoples heads. and i also didnt think i was going to get infected anymore since it feels like the pandemic is over.
I am going to wear an ffp2 mask at work from now on even though my job is physical in nature, because i dont want to miss another amazing planned weekend with my long distance boyfriend anymore. I cried so much over positive test results this week... i dont want to experience this and the horrible symptoms again. stay safe everyone
What were your symptoms?
This is not a problem at the school I work at lmao
In the United States. The ones who still wear face masks are viewed as odd. Especially the ones who wear them in their cars.
Am I the only one who likes wearing a mask because I don't have to care about what expression I'm making? 😅
I don't know, somehow talking to random people becomes more enjoyable when I'm not worrying about my default mean mug slipping out kk XD
In all seriousness, though, the kids being afraid of taking the masks off out of insecurity is concerning.
Your just a weirdo
I still wear a mask at work, just so I can go without shaving for a while and also not caring about my facial expression when talking/listening to someone
