  • This is just a quick video I made to open my presentation for Indian Studies where I'm talking about "Celluloid Indians" (Negative native stereotypes in Hollywood) Like I said, it's just an opener so there's no information, just examples set to possibly the most racially insensitive song Disney has ever come out with. I would say "Please don't be offended" but you probably should be offended. A lot of these clips are very offensive. Just don't get offended by me.

Very well edited and thought provoking. I only hope portrayals of native culture grow more nuanced in the future.

At first I thought they were singing Jana Mana Gana, and I thought "You've got the wrong kind of Indians guys!"

My whole life was a lie.
I’m not Colombian, Italian, Portuguese, & Native American.
On Ancestry, I’m OFFICIALLY...drum roll, please:
55.5% European of Iberian, Italian, & Balkan Peninsulas as well as the island of Malta. It’s a region defined in great part by the Mediterranean Sea.
    1.2% Ashkenazi Jewish
    0.5% French & German
    7.2% West African
    3.3% Senegambian & Guinean
    1.3% Nigerian
Ghanaian, Liberian, & Sierra Leonean 0.7%
    0.2% Egyptian, Arab, & Levantine
    1.1% North African
    0.2% Southern East African
1.8% Congolese & South East African
31.3% East Asian & Indigenous American
    9.6% Sub-Saharan African
1.8% Western Asian & North African
    0.3% Central & South Asian
& this is just from my mother. Someday we’ll do my father but he’s 100% Portuguese. Born & raised in America, though. We’ll see what Ancestry says about that 100%.
Bruh, I have some black in me. I swear to God, I never would’ve imagined.

@XceL10, that was 2 years ago when I made that comment. Last year I found out what I REALLY am from my mother’s blood on Ancestry. I went back & edited my comment. Now there’s paragraphs explaining what I am.

Can you explain what is offensive about it?

I am of Dakota, Ojibwe, and Ho-chunk descent.
So I can offer some perspective (keeping in mind that mine is just one out of many).
These movies depict American Indians in a variety of ways but most of them can be regarded as offensive because they portray them as boneheaded and bloodthirsty savages.
A lot of these characters are white people dressed up as indigenous people with the express purpose of mocking them (One possible exception being Iron Eyes Cody. Though he gave a more dignified portrayal of an Indian, championed the causes of Native people, and until his death BELIEVED he was one, he was actually Sicilian).
