The Greatest Archeological Discovery - The Naked Archaeologist 120 - Who Wrote the Dead Sea Scrolls?

  • Featuring amateur archaeologist, enthusiast and multi-award winning investigative filmmaker, Simcha Jacobovici, The Naked Archaeologist is an irreverent, entertaining and eye-opening journey into the fascinating archaeology of the ancient world. Along the way, new discoveries are made, lost treasures revealed, and ancient mysteries uncovered.
In the 1950s a Bedouin shepherd's sheep stumbled upon some ancient scrolls in a cave on the shores of the Dead Sea. This accidental find would prove to be the greatest archaeological discovery of the twentieth century. Known as The Dead Sea Scrolls they are one thousand fragments of holy writings from the time of Jesus and the Second Temple Destruction. But who wrote these documents?

Monasteries exist today in various places in the world. What is typical of most is the ability to support themselves through some sort of money making scheme, like farming products that they sell or making another product for the market. It is kind of difficult to maintain your monastery without any cash inflow, so who is to say that they weren't making pottery to sell to maintain themselves??

The scrolls were found in clay jars so it would only make sense that a group of people who don't place much stock in material things would have to make the jars themselves instead of purchasing them from an outside source. Its quite possible they wrote the scrolls and then modified part of their living quarters later to add kilns for making the storage pots for the scrolls.

So if their leader was an exile from the temple of Jeruselem he bought his own copies of religious text and reshaped them to suite his own beliefs, much as you'd expect from any cult. The irony is, this battle between good and evil doesn't seem to have gone as planned because the writers of the scrolls were almost certainly wiped out by the Romans, leaving their teachings hidden in those caves...
Its an interesting snapshot of religious thought at the time which can be uncomfortable for modern religious scholars because the importance of certain texts and understanding changes over time. This can lead to contradictions..
