  • In this video, I compare the difference between the trim/model levels of the 99 to 2011 Ford Rangers. I only compare 4X2 models and do not discuss 4X4 models. This is a great video, if you are considering buying a used Ranger and want the know the differences before purchasing.

The XL did come with a cruise control option, there was a Sport that had power options too. The Edge eventually became the Sport, exact same thing in a different name. I’m not a fan of the junky 3.0L either, give me the 2.3, 2.5 & 4.0 all day. These should’ve had the 3.0 Duratec in them instead. Also, power windows didn’t become standard in XLT’s until 2009, plus the window switches going bad in them is no worse than any other vehicle that has them too.

    Nice Rangers……..👍
I have an ‘09 2WD Sport (two-door extended cab with the 4.0 engine) that I originally bought new to be my daily driver. I ended up loving the truck so much that I discontinued using it as a driver after about 10,000 miles and rolled it into my long-term collection! The thing is absolutely spotless inside and out - the only thing that’s ever been hauled in the bed is the rubber bed mat that I bought the day I picked it up from the dealership and maybe an occasional suitcase..……😂
The thing that’s funny about this truck is that of all my collector vehicles, this is probably the lowest on the food chain of desirability - yet it gets TONS of attention when I take it out for a drive! I think people are so used to seeing them worked hard and put away wet that it freaks them out a little bit to see one that has been pampered it’s entire life and is still in showroom condition from top to bottom…….😂

    • @chasingmustangs
      @chasingmustangs  Před rokem

It may not be a future "collector vehicle" yet , but good condition Rangers will sell at a premium. I think in 20 years, they will be sought after. The cost of Tacoma's and new Rangers are within a few thousand of an F150 or Tundra. Small trucks are work trucks and seldom setting in a garage waiting to go to Mecum. Plus they are a great swap platform for Windsor 5.0 engines.

The 2.3L 4cyl and the 4.oL V6 are the best engines for the Ranger. Our 11 has the 4.0.
If we didn’t need the hp and torque, then we would have bought another 2.3L.

What in your estimation is the ideal make and model in a 4x4 ranger

    • @Doc1855
      @Doc1855 Před 6 měsíci +1

      @@MrBluoct We’ve been buying Ranger’s since the 80s.
Our first 2 were 4WD. 5spd manual transmission with the 2.3L 4cyl engine. Those engines were bulletproof. The first one was an XL trim. We opted for a cloth seat. It had vinyl flooring. It was used as a small work truck for our 17K acre ranch in Montana.
We’ve Never abused our equipment, but we worked them hard. When that one had 170K miles my wife didn’t have it in 4WD, hit a patch of ice and flipped it in a ditch. Thankfully she was ok but it totaled the truck. It landed upside down but the top of the cab was in the ditch so that’s what saved my wife. We continued using it Only on the ranch and the electrical system fried at 500K miles. It was beginning to burn about 1/2 a quart of oil between changes.
The 2nd one had the same power train as the first one. We put just under 700K miles on that one but it wasn’t worked as hard as the first one. It was burning a little over 2 quarts of oil between changes.
The 3rd one was an XLT super cab with a 3.0L V6. It ran perfectly until it hit 80K miles and then it started burning a LOT of oil, (5 quarts between oil changes). We started using “Honey” oil in an attempt to keep it from burning so much oil. We finally gave up and sold it. We were honest with the buyer. I think he put a new engine in it.
Our current Ranger so far has been the best for our current needs.
My brother had an 08 Ranger with the same power train as our 11. He had around 250K miles on it when he sold it and bought a new Tacoma this summer.
Our nephew has a 2010 Ranger with the same power train as ours and he has almost 300K miles on his. Most of his mileage are freeway miles.
I noticed a gain in hp, torque and mpg in our current 11 Ranger after adding a K&N cold air intake and a 3” FlowMaster exhaust.
Our families ranch is in Montana, but my wife and I live in north central Washington state in a very mountainous area.
I’m retired and in a few years my wife will retire as well.
We mainly use our Ranger for work around our property, which consists of 54.5 acres of mostly mountainous terrain.
We have only about 1/2 an acre of usable land.
The Ranger is mainly used for hauling topsoil, firewood, gravel, etc.
We put adjustable air shocks on the rear of our Ranger so that we can haul heavier loads.
Before adding the air shocks, our Ranger could haul 1/2 a yard of topsoil. Now we can haul just over a full yard with 75# of air in the shocks.
We finished building our dream home in 19 into the side of our mountain. We’re now building retaining walls into the side of our mountain to create “flat” and raised garden beds.
We haul a LOT of topsoil, gravel for drainage and bricks from one side of our property to the area where we’re building the retaining walls.
I enjoy the ride quality of the super cab, as the longer wheel base makes the ride smoother.
The first 2 Ranger’s were regular cabs and the second two were / are super cabs. All 4 of them have 6’ beds.
Because of our age and only putting about 3K miles on our Ranger yearly, this will be the last pickup we’ll ever need to buy… unless Toyota comes back with a 4WD Hybrid super cab with a 6’ bed Hilux. We would consider buying one for the improved mileage.
Our favorite Ranger is our current one.
I’ve put more into it than any other Ranger we’ve ever owned, only because the other 3 were ranch work trucks.
We bought our current 11 Ranger in 19. It had only 20K miles on it when we bought it.
It’s Silver. My wife and I don’t like Silver, Grey, or Black, so I had ours 2 toned. It’s now Silver over Red metallic. I also had it reupholstered in Red with black trim and stitching. I put on custom wheels, custom pinstripes, running boards, dashboard cover, window vents, LineX spray in bed liner, tonneau cover, the intake and exhaust, air shocks.
      It still looks showroom new.
I change the oil and filter every 6 months (about 1,500 miles) with Valvoline full synthetic oil.
As with all of our vehicles I changed the front and rear differential, transfer case and transmission fluid at 30K miles.
I’ve only towed twice with it, so the tow pkg came in handy. The limited slip rear differential comes in handy.
The Ranger’s have proven themselves to be durable and reliable.
Our current Ranger is an XLT.
Because we plan on keeping this Ranger for the rest of our lives, that’s why I chose to “trick” it out a bit.
I get a Lot of compliments on the 2 toned paint and the interior color scheme.
I’ve heard of some people yanking their 4 or 6 cyl engines out and stuffing in a 5.0L (302) V8. I’d like to do that with our Ranger, but it’ll never happen.
Some of the early 4.0L V6 engines had problems with timing chains and blown head gaskets. To my understanding those issues were corrected with the 08 Ranger’s.
The 10 & 11 Ranger’s were the best last 2 years of the original small Ranger’s.
Ford made only 2 Ranger’s in 2012. One Ford kept for themselves and sold the other one to Orkin. That one was totaled when someone ran a red light and T-boned the last small Ranger.
We had a 2010 Toyota Tundra 4WD, but at 8mpg city and 15mpg on the highway, it was More truck than we needed, so we sold it and decided to look for a low mileage 4WD Ranger. Two days later I found ours in the paper.
The original owner was 62 when he bought it and just drove short distances around town.
The day after we bought it, we had to drive a 4 hour round trip. It only got 16mpg. Once we got it “broke in” correctly, it was getting 19mpg on the highway with the cruise set on 75mph. After modifying the intake and exhaust, we now consistently get 23mpg and on a few occasions we’ve gotten 25mpg and those times the truck was loaded down with some farm equipment that we needed in Washington from the ranch in Montana.
I hope this helps you with your decision on which Ranger is best for you.
One other thing, the 2.3L 4cyl timing CHAIN engines aren’t as reliable as the timing BELT engines.
If you don’t need a lot of power and want the fuel economy, go with the 2.3L Timing BELT engine. If taken care of with regular maintenance, they’ll easily last for 1/2 million miles.
      Enjoy your day !

I have a 2003 Ranger Edge , 4L extra cab with a matching factory tonnuae cover . The biggest difference between the edge model and all of the others . Is that the edge has Torsion bar front suspension , regardless of whether it was two or four-wheel drive . While all of the other two wheel drive Rangers have coil spring . The Edge also sits at 4-wheel drive right height regardless of whether it's a two-wheel drive or four-wheel drive .

I have an 05 xlt supercab.. Manual windows and locks, 4.0 manual, rear seat delete, ac, no cruise but all the cubbies.

Is it a special edition? I have never seen XLT without power. I have owned a lot of them. Come to think of it, I have never owned an 05 Ranger. Maybe they did some unique builds that year.

@chasingmustangs I'm not sure. I bought it from the original owners wife and she didn't know anything. He had passed away so I couldn't ask him but everything seems to match.

@solaralloyd6157 my guess is it was a special order. My grandfather used to do this on his trucks. He would special order the highest level trim with no power options. He would say that stuff just breaks after the warranty.

I think you forgot to showcase the FX4 and Level 2 FX4 models, though that may be because you didn’t have any. The FX4s had optional leather upholstery.

Like I said in the video, I was only talking about rear wheel drive Rangers. In Texas, 90% of the trucks sold are rear wheel drive only. So I really don't get much much exposure to the 4X4 market.

@@ET74019Why not get a used Maverick hybrid instead? It’s a lot better on mileage and especially good for hauling family as well as towing.
