    INFO: The Strokes were one of those bands that created a new movement in rock music in the early 2000s. The release of their debut album fueled what was becoming the garage rock revival movement in the US alongside albums from the White Stripes, Interpol and Yeah Yeah Yeahs. Their simplistic, yet evocative sound made skinny jeans and guitars popular again, and they’ve managed to keep their sound both congruent andfresh from one album to another.

    It’s sad that this video was made before the release of the new abnormal. That album gave Julian and the band more creative freedom with their new producer and especially after Julian’s experimentation with the Voidz. I think the new abnormal is their second best album no doubt.

    I kinda like how rock is not the most popular genre anymore. I like the underground resistance movement feeling when going to shows. Now great rock singles are less likely to be desecrated by their over use in dumb commercials. Most importantly bands are less likely to take the generic route when coming up with new music. It promotes having to experiment and take risk on new sounds. People say rock is dead... no its just lying low and will come back stronger than ever for those who always enjoy it or really hearing it for the first time. Even if it never becomes the most popular genre ever again. I truly appreciate the work you do by spreading the gospel of rock brother Lie.

    'Is This It' is the best album I know. EVERY song on it is worth listening to, down to the last second. I don't usually like listening to albums generally because for an artist there's about three good songs on average in an album while everything else is mediocre. But I love this album. It's my favorite.

    • @LieLikesMusic
      @LieLikesMusic  Před 6 lety +34

      I'm glad you enjoy it that much. Personally i've always been an album person. I usually just return to those
      albums where 70% of the album's songs are good, because i like to take the time and listen to the whole thing.
      Maybe it has something to do with the fact that i used to collect CD's when i was younger. And i got some more
      patience from listening to those.

      You're right. My friend recommended it to me this year and at first I didn't think it was anything special and each song sounded ordinary. But the more I listened, the more I became attached to each song that I ended up liking every single song on that album. I too selectively choose songs from an artist rather than listening to a whole album but every song on ITI has a unique vibe and makes me feel a different way, I love it.

  • @Elvis_Gonzalez

    Absolutely love The Strokes, they took influence from Television and Joy Division in a perfect sense, in which each member of the band plays a different part or a counter melody (I read that Julian Casablancas also studied classical music, which can be why this is also present in The Strokes). The beauty of The Strokes is that they don't sound derivative either (Like Wolfmother), and instead, take a retro sound and put an original twist to it. The Strokes were absolutely needed.

    • @LieLikesMusic
      @LieLikesMusic  Před 6 lety +2

    After their long hiatus and his solo career, when he came back, he avoided participating in the song creating process so the other members could have more control and make more songs.

    That was really cool. Been waiting for it. I do feel Is This It was the best debut album of 00s along with The Funeral by Arcade Fire. room on fire was pretty great too but they went downhill from there. All the records following room on fire were decent records though and had atleast 3-4 pretty good songs. I am digging Julian's work apart from strokes and although the voidz don't have a mainstream appeal but I think he is doing something exciting and making record that sound nothing like strokes. And yes do make an in depth video on Julian Cascablancas In the future. Probably my favorite artist post 00s!

      [sad sigh]... i love people who say their only 1st two albums were good and it all started to go downhill from there... ahh how typical, have you ever fucking heard Vision Of Division, Electricityscape, Razorblade, Life Is Simple In The Moonligh, Games, 80s Comedown Machine, Call It Fate Call It Karma, One Way Trigger??? i'm glad they added something new with every album but still having one foot inside garage/indie rock sound, the only "weak" album from them would be Angles and only because couple of songs(two kinds of happiness, you're so right, metabolism) that didn't really quite fit them
      and as the guy said in the video, is this it and room on fire sound quite simplistic, maybe thats the reason why people get into them and stick with it with stubbornness, first impressions of earth have way more complex guitar sound, julians vocal range is also wider, the only downside of the album is that is has a couple of filler songs(fear of sleep, killing lies and probably one more i can't remember now), give other albums another chance i'm sure one day you will realize how incredibly crafted they are

    The Strokes are one of the only bands that I've been listening to for 10+ years and haven't ever really been disappointed by yet. There are some real stinkers on Angles for sure, but also some of my favorite songs as well. Otherwise their output has been unimpeachable, imo. People have been shitting on them for 17 years because they didn't want to just keep making Is This It over and over, and of course there's just a sick fascination with seeing someone who garners immediate fame and success suffer a fall. So many other bands started copying Is This It, and they went in a more new wave, 80s revival, pop, prog, and metal direction to try and remain distinct from their copycats. Idk why this is automatically considered a bad thing, but that seems to be the narrative among many music critics and casual fans. Nobody ever seems to judge the music on its own terms, but rather by what it's not and wasn't trying to be. Idk how anyone can listen to "Tap Out," or "Happy Ending," and say Comedown Machine is a bad album. Those songs slap so fucking hard. They're just not really rock songs, is all.
    Let this be a lesson to you, success can be a curse. Best case scenario is it builds slowly and peaks in the middle of your career.
