    The nuts on the front snare lugs is a brilliant idea. I've been doing that for a few years and it definitely prevents having to constantly re-tighten those lugs in the 8-5 o'clock range if I'm playing rimshots.

    These are not his drums except for the snare. His Truth drums sound amazing and his Drumcrafts are amazing too. He uses Evans G2 on everything except the kick which is an EQ3. His tuning method is phenomenal and is just a starting point. He said you can tune it up or down. Not everyone will like Josh’s method but when you hear his band live you’ll probably go up to him and ask him how he gets such good tone from his drums. And his sound guy is amazing too.

    Thanks, very informative. As an amateur drummer, I always thought that you have to tighten the heads till they're not loose, but I needed confirmation. But there's one question I'd like to make: I'm Christian Orthodox, does that mean that I have to tune drums differently compared to, say, Catholic Christians?

    Great video. Nice to get some today confirmation that the fat drum sound of the 80s was just fantastic. Reminds me about my first real beefy snare, a Tama Imperialstar 14x6,5” steel snare. I found out that one key to a good snare sound is to tighten up the bottom head quite high. Would be nice to hear about the tuning relation between top and bottom heads if there is any, or if you just crank the heads up to the first fundamental tone with it seems like. Nice video, good info. God bless you Nick and Josh. 👍🥁

    This is his kit when it's mic'd up: czcams.com/video/dKxeZsZvp7E/video.html. Part of his tuning is taking into account that the kit will be mic'd and sculpted at the board, then run through a massive PA with lots of subs. If he was playing small clubs, he'd probably tune the kit different. It's not the only way to tune/mic drums, but for this style of song, it's what serves the song and the moment right. It would be horrible for metal, pop or hard rock, but for this stuff, the scooped, deep tone wins. Just another tool in the toolbox for getting drums to serve whatever song they need to serve.

      @@porkchopexpress10112 Right. I think the way I wrote my comment was confusing. I didn't mean that the kit in the 'how to tune' video was his kit. I meant that the kit in the link I posted was his kit. i.e The one he's playing in concert.

    I was been on sound check with drum, tuned like this.. this sound engineer use some magic studio plugins in life performance to give to this method life.. without correctly plugins and eq, it sounds was horrible. I’ve try this tuning, but sound engineer need exactly to know, how work with this type of sound.. I like how sounds drums for Jesus Culture, but it style. If you try to play some different style, or more busy drum parts- it simply can not work for that. Not works for funk, Latin, Gospel.. or need another high snare. For me last time, I find great to tune drums, for example like Nate Morton.. He play in Voice tv show, and his drums sound sounds great in all styles..

    To each his own, but those drums probably sound like dull boxes about 10 feet in front of them. I've played drums tuned that way and they have no life, presence or volume. Personally, I like to have the batter heads tuned a bit higher than just above wrinkle, with the bottom head tuned even higher to allow more projection, which gives the drum life and projects the sound a lot better (a la John Bonham). Sound engineers and PA systems will get that kit sounding ok live, but it's absolutely no fun and non inspiring to play.....and yes, the snare sounds like poo. Bad tuning overall IMO.

    • @eastbaymauiboy
      @eastbaymauiboy Před 6 lety

      I don't get any of this. If you're gonna tune em low, fine, tune em low... but just barely hangin on?... Yeah, I'm not down. I like drums to resonate and have tone. Again, they can be low, just not in the basement covered in mud.
      Also, what's up with the nuts on the tension rods?. Just tune it real quick. I can tune a snare that's been played on for 3 full practices in about a minute. Tom's in less than 30 seconds per side.
      Believe it or not though, I actually do like to watch people and all their different ways, whether I agree or not. It teaches you different methods you could try out, if you feel so inclined

    Not really very informative. I have literally hundreds of drums with as many variations of heads and none of them have a baseline sound like that, even loose and flabby. Maybe it would help if these weren't mic'd so all you hear is the actual drum sounds? You are starting out pretty close to the "production" sound you are looking for regarding the type of music you are focusing on. Do this thing from scratch with no microphones, except the ones you need to record what you are trying to demonstrate. That would be more helpful I think.

It really shows the amount of downfall of rock n' roll (or in general any music that uses real instruments anymore) that is actually happening in this world today. Everywhere I look on Facebook and every other social media site the only people that talk about their instrument are ALL worship musicians. I get that this video is supposed to be informative and all and is really is but it also just really shows that about the only place you can play anymore is in a church, It's just sad.

    Not one for commenting on videos, but this is terrible. His floor tom has attack and low end but no tone whatsoever. It'll sound pretty much like hitting a wet paper bag. In a live situation or in the studio, his kit would sound like a bag of shit. The way he tunes his toms is also a pretty sure fire way of damaging your heads. Also, not matching the lugs pitch will give you some strange warbly tone in your toms. Please, don't tune your drums like this. His snare drum also sounds awful, tuning low doesn't equal big drum sounds. Tune your drums in their range and you'll get big sounds.
