Bass Fishing for Beginners: How to Sidearm Roll Cast with a BAITCASTER (VERY USEFUL CAST)

  • In my opinion, the roll cast is one of the most IMPORTANT casts for new anglers to learn. The overhand cast may come natural and allow you to throw a bait REALLY far. However, the ability to accurately place the bait with as little commotion as possible is priceless! I think it’s HIGHLY overlooked among anglers new to bass fishing.
    I’ll break this cast down from beginning to end. I’ll give you a few pointers that I’ve learned along the way that have helped me to adapt. I can only build the foundation from which you will grow. If you truly want to master this cast, you’ll need to put TIME IN ON THE WATER.

    Roll Casting check.
    After I started watching your videos, I decided that each time I go fishing, I have to do fifty casts with a bait caster to practice. Not only does this help me become more familiar with it, but it lets me practice the teaching of fishing sensei Debo.
    Today after too many hours at the lake (11). I got out my baitcaster and started casting my buzzbait. Four bass later, and I was pinpointing pretty well where it landed.
    Thanks Debo.

    I've been learning basic roll casts on my lighter spinning gear for creek fishing where it's tough to find enough room to cast due to bushes, grass, overhanging trees, footbridges, etc. The smaller motion means I can fish from more spots. Found it easier to start learning with a heavier lure before trying it with little jigs, spinners, etc

I know you are a big kast king fan and I love the 3 that I have, but I just purchased the Lews tournament mb and I gotta say that the smoothness and quality of the Lews is undeniable. I’m not saying that I’m hanging up my kast king setups because I have not had a single issue with any of them and they serve their purpose well. That's a critical cast to learn, especially bank anglers who have to work tree-lined banks. It will keep your top water frog from becoming a tree frog. We've all seen lures abandoned in tree limbs, I know I have a couple up there also. It's more acceptable to loose a lure to a sharp-toothed fish, than to loose it in a tree from a misguided cast!

      @DEBOSFishing  Před 6 lety +2

    Do you show how to do this from a kayak? Mostly when sitting down. I have a sit/stand kayak, but still mastering the standing. I do like you said, my cast seems to go too far to the left. I’m right handed.

    • @DEBOSFishing
      @DEBOSFishing  Před 5 lety +1

      Yep, it will work the same way sitting down. You can practice just sitting on a box that is roughly the height of your yak. If you cast with your right arm and it goes too far left, you're either letting go too late or you're putting the bait in a rolling motion that is not in line with your target. Some folks will roll the bait toward them instead of keeping it out parallel to the target. I've got a vid coming up that should help!

      Yep, press the thumb bar down to release the spool and hold the spool in place with your thumb. If you take your thumb off, the lure will fall down to the ground. So you want to make sure that's pressed down before you even go into the motion of the cast!

    I fish off the bank a lot to. You have tree limbs hanging down behind you. High grass below you.
    The roll cast is good to use. So your not lifting your rod way up over your shoulder to throw a hay maker cast and get snagged.

      FTW Fishing thanks for watching brother! If you're newer to baitcasters, I would not go with the Stealth. It's a good reel but takes a bit to get use to. I would go with the Spartacus or Pro Max. Both are great reels. If you want to get a KastKing, I would wait. They have new reels coming that look sweet!

    So i've been using my baitcaster for freshwater and all but could it also be used for saltwater?

    • @DEBOSFishing
      @DEBOSFishing  Před 6 lety +1

      just matt that depends. Check the box or listing of the reel you have. Salt is HARD on gear and bearings and metal and well...everything lol. I would also recommend rinsing the reel with after each use in salt IF it's saltwater safe. Hope this helps man.

    • @DEBOSFishing
      @DEBOSFishing  Před 4 lety

      Are you casting with slack. The line and lure should be tight the whole time. If there is a little slack and the line pops or bounces when you cast, you'll get a backlash every time.

  • @MrBoomer-jl2gw
    @MrBoomer-jl2gw Před 8 měsíci

    I never use my thumb on my reel. I dont need to cuz i have a spinning reel. Ha ha! Spinning reels are so much better cuz there is no big splash and you can throw light lures. You just catch more bass with a spinning reel. I got rid of all my baitcasters and have one rod. A big disadvantage with the baitcaster is limited distance due to more accuracy but if youre just out there to just have a good time, the spinning reel is the best. Baitcasters are too much technicality. Spinning reels are just simple fun

    I absolutely love medium action rods. They just feel so right in my hands. I have a medium and a medium heavy. My medium heavy is strictly for flipping and pitching. Cant cast with it as well as the medium action. Now that i learned a new casting technique, i think i will love my medium rod all that more. There should be an industry standard for medium action rods
