- This engine will power a vintage Fiat 128 race car that should definitely be capable of holding its ground in the italian historic racing championship.
The glorious FIAT SOHC engine powered a host of cars over the years like the Fiat 128, Regata, Ritmo, Punto mk1, Uno, Tipo, Tempra, X1/9 etc. Add some kugelfischer style mechanical injection, slide throttles and the sound becomes rather interesting! Too bad they didn't rev it all the way to its 10k rpm redline.

Lovely motor, revs super clean and sounds strong!
this engine builders are genius , listen the clear sound and the response on the throttle amazing work
Thank you! I'll gladly pass the compliment on to them :)
That actually sounds very nice. Not horribly loud or lope-y, but a nice smooth rasp.
Thank you! Keep in mind that it was kept below 4k rpm in the video. At 10k it's as loud and obnoxious as any other race engine :)
That fuel rail/nozzle setup is really cool. Never seen that before. 👍🏼👍🏼
It looks cool in this version but in reality, when pushing the pedal (or whatever they had here) you can see quite some fuel escaping into the atmosphere.
I've seen it in a F1 engine test by Renault.
Haha imagine the smell
Here is the Renault F1 test with clear sight of the injectors

Guy on right looks like he is holding in a turd!
that looks very flammable
If its not capable of killing you its not as fun
Plenty of Ducati’s run shower injectors like this, it’s totally safe as long as there’s an enclosed air box or plenum around it, and even with it out in the open, as long as the engines running pretty much all the fuel vapours getting pulled straight in so it’s not quite as dangerous as it looks.
Eduardo J it do
Here let me light up your ciggar
Hope that thing dosent back fire
sounds sharp, great job guys
Lovley little machining details like the ink. rail and alt. bracket. Needs to have load on it though
I could listen to this all day, beautiful.
Glad you enjoy it!
That's a cool lil motor. Love to see it running in something.
Que Maravilha... um belíssimo trabalho... linda sinfonia em marcha lenta 👏👏👏 parabéns
this is what i call art. the kugelfischer injection system look very dangerous, wasting fuel.but with some modification like puting some custom air filter.i think the engine is ready for an action
Better than eating fresh pasta and drinking fine red wine! This would fit very nicely in our x1/9 ;)
Accidental poetry!
Better than eating pasta

this would fit nicely
in our fiat x1\9!
no it's not. good, but not that good
Had an X1/9 in my youth .... loved it !! With the pop-up h/lights & the removable hardtop it was magical & quite the eye-catcher at the time !! 👍😎☘
Saludos desde ecuador q hermoso motor los felicito xfas muestren mas selo pido bendiciones
Looks super clean!
But at 0:50 - injector (3) isnt spraying properly like the others or is it just me?
You have sharp eyes!
I thought the same.
yup
Yeah, first thing I noticed. No 3 isn't atomising as well as the others.
I was just about to say this
Favoloso !!!!! Averlo avuto sulla mia 128 a 19 anni.....
pure amazing clear sound
Those lampredi sohc’s are dope. I’m building a 1300 with 11.7:1 CR, kugelfischer, 290 or 316 cam with 11.2mm lift, and some lightening. My x1/9 is probably gonna catch on fire, but it don’t matter if it sounds like an f1 engine behind my head
In family we have a fiat 128 with a 1100cc SOHC engine, It has so much torque!
@@andrefixa they’re small, but have way more torque than bike swaps most the time. I’d love to get a Dallara 16v head one day are really make it breathe

A Turkish car (Tofaş Şahin) was powered by the 1.4 and 1.6 liter versions of this engine as well, actually, I drive one with the 1.4 liter version.
Cool! A similar engine was also used in some russian cars :)
ya squirt the juice directly into the wide open throat - how naughty is that?
The beautifullest injection construction I ever saw!
Sounds so smooth
I subbed, nice vid! I like fiat engines
Suerte!
Hi a see your another video were I see yours Fiat 128 with over fenders. My question is do you have for sell those overs fenders. Thanks
They are selling them on their website. I ended my relationship with this shop after too many mishaps that delayed an engine rebuild and had me lose an entire season.
Thats interesting fuel injection system
having the injectors exposed tat way incresse perfomrance?... are the injectors stand on the open or under the hood?
Putting the injectors on top of the velocity stacks improves the fuel's spray pattern. They are still kept under the hood and, fire risks aside, provide that little extra "omph" when compared to engines that have the injectors on the side! There's an old video of a renault f1 engine sporting a similar configuration: czcams.com/video/y2iBbwocYZw/video.html
have you ever driven or raced a car with 2x dual 50mm webers and a very lumpy camshaft with big overlap??? the amount of fuel spilled is way way way way bigger than with this especially at idle
@@MrHBSoftware I have an 89 Honda Accord with dual 45 Webers on it and can attest to that statement lol
que lindo que suena , muestren un poco mas del motor
what happen with 3rd injector?
cheers from Indonesia
It probably needed to be cleaned :)
Que ronco mais gostoso de ouvir ,é esse saindo do escapamento.
sounds awesome 👍
spettacolare.
Grazie!
Looks so cool
amazing this job
Good for teaching
That header looks sick
Amazing work! I notice it isn't a crossflow head- is that a constraint of the racing regulations?
Yup. Damn rulebooks. It's also impossible to adopt a crossflow configuration on a oem head and having a custom head built from scratch requires too much money and effort... at that point it becomes cheaper to adapt a different 16v, dohc head from fiat :)
Great Soud !!!
Oddly satisfying... :3 👍
Hmmmm,,,, don't know much about the SOHC engine,,but with that much inlet manifold i'd be using the DOHC engine,1800 i had was alright in a light car,,mind mine was the older design with the dizzie driven by aux shaft,,like the Datsun 1600 engine had to time oil pump to set up dizzie,,still don't know why aux shaft had to be set at 37 1/2 degs of top dead centre,,
and i agree,,with the rest of them No 3 is looking lean,,,,
It looks really good, 295º camshaft? have you dynoed it? never tried with a so long header, and just a thought you are having too much oil pressure commonly happens when the aux camshaft its too tight, hope you polished the oil pressure relief valve, anyway it looks really good, congratulations hope you upload more videos, greetings from argentina
Hello! I'm sorry I cannot give you any more information on the engine. Unfortunately i cut my ties with the tuners in questions after they were unable to deliver on their promises as far as my engines and cars were concerned.

How are the intake air temps with the header basically touching the ITB’s
This type of engine flows enough air to make the exhaust location a non-issue.
Question why put the injectors there? Wouldn't be better has direct port? I mean that looks cool
That was the best possible system back then and vintage racers have to adhere to certain rules that mandate period correct parts.
Hi. I was wondering if you can help me in tuning my own sohc engine in a Tempra. I want to install a stroker kit to increase displacement to 1.9 from 1.6 as well as add a higher flowing head, larger intake valves and a sporty cam while retaining its orginal carburettor and daily drivabillity. I hope to at least make twice the stock power (originally its 86 hp so maybe 172 ?) or possibly even hit 200 hp with good quality headers. What is your opinion on such a setup or what advice you can give me on the sohc ? Thanks in advance.
I could probably build it for you :)
However forget about reaching 200hp on a 1.9l 8v engine without extensive modifications that would kill its driveability and with a stock carburettor. 150hp sounds like a more realistic goal :)
However i'd probably look into swapping some more modern engine with a decent ECU. Carbs suck!
Whats that thing spraying??? Is it open compustion???
wow that is cool, how are the injectors controlled since they do not seem electric
Kugelfischer fuel injection! It's a mechanical injection system used on some pretty neat cars like many old porsches, bmw 2002 tii etc.
Cool Thanks!
old mechanical shit... like the whole engines.. Italians can make good food but not good cars
many new racing cars use old mechanic injection sytem.
and whant kind of injectors are thoes?
nice video
always wondered why people dont put the injectors above the throttle blades on injected engines more often. atomizes and cools fuel amazingly well.
Fire hazards, puddling when travelling at constant part throttle, more fire hazards etc :)
How much Horsepower/cavallo/ps?
that 4-1 manifold looks kinda funky why are the split like that? 4 in row instead of 4 in a square?
Space constraints. It's a transverse engine installed on a FWD car.
they didn't rev it to its 10k red line without a load because doing that is stupid
But it would be awesome.
Holy fuck someone who understands!!!!
engine needs Cum?
No problem with revs, I had a mostly standard head a blocked 128 SL coupe. Pretty little coupe. I took it to 8000 to 8500 RPM frequently. Cant kill them with a stick. But the standard will elongate valves eventually. they stretch with the constant high revs.
Wow how cool is that, that motor was originally carburetered? I love it .
Indeed it was!
Just curious, why are you guys using mechanical FI instead of electronic? Since the injector is spraying down the stack, and butterflies may be closed or partially open, does that cause AF ratio problems? Looks and sounds great!
historic and vintage car racing competitions have some restrictions. Engine wise it's usually only possible to use systems that were available at the time.
This injectors are like "gicles" (jets)? Whats control the pulse? A "master" injector ?
I reckon the kugelfischer runs on a mechanical fuel pump that also works as a fuel distributor but i may be wrong :)
que tipo de inyectores son?
Kugelfischer
sounds sweet
Acho que esse motor é o mesmo que a FPT Brasil usa atualmente, FIRE!
This is not the engine called FIRE, it's called Tipo from the 90's. Fire was from the 2000's, and now is the engines called FIREFLY.
@@G.Suzuman Yes, name in Brazil is SEVEL argentino
that shower setting looks awesome!
Im from Brazil and our neighbours at argentina are experts at tuning these sohc fiats to honda power levels, when im 18 i plan to build a fiat uno making 130whp and i have one question, is this engine the "sevel" 1.6 engine?
First of all i wish you the best of luck with your first engine build! To answer your question: no, this is a SOHC 1.6 engine from a fiat 128. I'd say it's the great grandfather of the sevel engine :)
just 128 for all of that mod ?
I must admit that sound from this engine killing me !
Aonde eu encontro uns bicos desses ai
Spray pattern is not correct on one of the injectors! what type of injection is this?kugelfischer?
It's a Kugelfischer injection system. 100% mechanical. One injector was in need of a rebuild :)
Beautiful!
I was at your home page and wondered what tunes and cost can be done to an engine for road use? Key would be itb and at least 100-130 hp.
But I couldn't find any info. I would to know an estimate.
Btw we love to see a clip of a car in action with your engine mods.
Cheers!
100-130hp can be achieved for roughly 5-6k :)
@@TheDementedMonkeys thank you for the quick reply!
Alright that includes for the parts and work/labour?

@@tolinanelda2448 depending where you live, yes!
That engine sounds so good! Do you have specs?
I wrote them somewhere in the comments. I went NC with these tuners after they botched 2 jobs one after the other leaving me without cars for years.
Awesome!! I have a Fiat 128 with a Ritmo 1,6 sohc engine.Just qurious, how much would it cost to build a engine like this ?!
is "too much" a valid answer? Kugelfischer injection systems cost up to 2000€ nowadays... The whole build might be around 12k with many parts being one-off designs.
In our opinion you should consider tuning the engine you already have to a reliable 140hp either carburetted or fuel injected, without going crazy with a race engine that has a lifespan that can be measured in hours and not thousands of miles!
Feel free to contact us if you want any advice on what to do to your engine, we'd love to help you plan the build of a solid engine that doesn't break the bank! We also know many trusted professional that might even be willing to do it for you!
The Demented Monkeys Thank your for the answer! My fiat is a true track car with rollcage, coilover suspension but I miss some parts. It' 100% street legal and I want a daily driven "racer".
My goal is reliabe 200hp since that gives a really fun power to weight ratio. Currently I'm missing the front R/L control arms and bushings and a comlete wiring harness and gearshifter + linkage for the car. Sadly parts is quite difficult to find here in Sweden.
Possible to build a reliable engine with 150-200hp with fuel injection? maybe cheaper with carbs?
Sweden? Awesome we have friends in Malmo! 150hp are an easy goal, 200hp requires a lot of work and would make the engine definitely not enjoyable on the streets and temperamental tuning wise. Control arms... the mechanic who built this engine just finished making these: czcams.com/video/7FBNB47RDVc/video.html , i'm sure building a couple of control arms wouldn't be much of a problem!
Would you mind sending us a mail so that we can try to determine what you may or may not need to complete your build? It would be a shame to waste money on unnecessary parts!
Yes, around 250km from Malmö :)
Lovely work there!! What´s ur email adress?

Из какой машины этот двигатель?
Using the 85-90 hp 1600 SOHC motors as points of reference, how easily can they be fettled in road-going spec to match the 105-108 hp 1600 Twin-Cam engines used in the Ritmo/Strada 105TC and Delta 1.6 GT? Would 100-110 hp for a 1600 SOHC be a realistic target?
It's not too hard and should actually require only minor tuning and some decent parts ;)
How are the injectors excited ? I see no electrical connection ?
They are mechanically turned on by the fuel pressure itself. It works the same way as a diesel injection system, but without being direct injection
An engine from a 1993-1995 Fiat Punto GT MKI with the block code 176.A4.000 made 136bhp. How much does this one make?
an extra 80 or 100 hp, depending on its configuration.
punto gt is EFI and turbocharged, you are comparing apples with potatoes
That motor sound fucking gorgeous!
Explain long air inlet, please.
Intake length affects the powerband\tq curve.
Losing fuel out of the stacks off throttle. Pretty lumpy fuel coming out of the injectors too. Should be a screamer once you get it all sorted with the valves.
Haha the guy to the right looks so constipated.
Ok, how much hp?
Que lindo !
I think that the 3rd injector doesn't spray as wide as the rest...
Why were the guns placed in the intake manifold?
Poweeeeer!
How's the Kugelfischer system on turbo cars?
the bmw 2002 turbo used it. It worked just fine!
@@TheDementedMonkeys thanks!
Hi there, may I know What exactly was tuned?
everything, basically.
@@TheDementedMonkeys Ok thx
How do you tune The mixture and The injector Pump?
lots of little screws and a bit of wizardry.
@@TheDementedMonkeys come on it was a serious question from a really frustated enumerous research atempts... there is very little information on mechanical injection.
@@itrstt66 Sorry if I sounded like i was making fun of you but that's actually true. On a mechanical fuel injection system you generally act on fuel pressure, relief valves, injector size and spray pattern, fuel volume etc through a bunch of screw and by mix and matching more or less custom made parts until you achieve an acceptable result. It's part tech and part black magic!
@@TheDementedMonkeys allright, i can see you are aocking demon... no worries didnt take it personally. thank you by the way for the clarifying answer. i can understand its "science" it is kind of like tunning in a carb by the feeling of it. and if so as well as it is, ther must be a certain doctrine or base procedure for mechanical injection tunning. could you share it please i have been trying to get that and it is really demanding to find a good article on that even more someone with experience.
like for carb on needs get it to spec, then pre tunning the choke and idles screws, then tunning it cold fast idle, tunning it hot mixture to max possible vaccum and base idling and tunning it cold again check it on hot and readjust if needed, i understand this would be a general universal base procedure for a carb. What do you consider to be the same counterpart as to mechanical injection?
grateful in advance
@@itrstt66 To be honest with you I don't think there's a standard procedure. On a kugelfischer system you can act on fuel pressure and flow for the most part by taking advantage of some minor "built-in" adjustability or replacing the parts with custom made ones. Other mechanical systems are much simpler and act just like a carb would, with positive, mechanically provided pressure instead of vacuum dependent fuelling. The best way to learn how to tune a system is to find a workshop manual for it and see how the manufacturer devised its adjustments. I'm not sure about kugelfischer set-ups but the internet is full of pdfs for the insanely weird and yet amazing k-jetronic electro-mechanical injection systems :)
It's speaking with motor lovers!

Always thought intake injection looked cool, portal soundtrack.
are all tuners incapable of holding a throttle valve open?
when breaking in an engine some prefer to apply a steady rotation on the first minutes of working and others like to vary the rotation anywhere from idle to 3 or 4k rpm...i prefer the second method..allows to check for pinging or detonation , check throttle response (if engine is too lean it will hesitate whn sudden throttle is applied), check for vibrations or noises and other reasons.... remeber boy this not your OBD-2 piece of crap
@@MrHBSoftware okay yeah that covers this case...but this is just what people do when displaying engines, whether they have 2 or 2000 miles under their belt and i think it's annoying
@@Gigaguenther allright i understand that...sometimes they do it just beacuse...and it can be annoying especially with 2-stroke engines

Good 👏
Ifd you took those injectors out of a volvo turbo, you will have one injector not spraying like the others by design.
As i know k jetronic injectors are not similar on the same bank of cylinders.
The number 2 from the front side injector on your engine is not spraying the same as the others.
You will lean one cylinder, specially the number 2 and 3 wich run hotter by design also.
Not good...
Never seen injectors done like that
Was hoping you'd go full throttle
