  • Bob Elliot presents New England Diners, a 1991 documentary filmed for WCSH channel 6 in Portland, Maine. Features interviews with operators and patrons of diners, as well as with a restoration company. Covered are places like the Modern Diner in Pawcatuck RI, the Lady Worcester Diner and Chadwick Square Diner in Worcester MA, Gilley's Diner in Portsmouth NH, Lloyd's Diner in Orange MA, the A1 Diner in Gardiner ME, Casey's Diner in Natick MA, the Seagull Diner in Kittery ME, the Riverview Diner (which moved from Harris PA to Maine), and more.
BetaGems are culled from an archive of over 1000 beta video tapes recorded from 1983 into the 1990s. Most feature live music performances broadcast on television in San Diego CA, though there are also rarely seen commercials, comedy clips, old TV news segments, made-for-TV movies and documentaries, religious programming, variety shows, talk show interviews, and other material that doesn't seem to be anywhere else on CZcams or online. Most of the tapes were recorded on a Sony SL-HFT7 Super Beta Theater Hi-Fi Stereo - the same model was refurbished and is being used for these digital transfers and uploads.
In rare occasions where a BetaGems clip does appear elsewhere, we're only uploading if our own beta master is better quality or contains material not seen previously. Much footage comes from public television and public access broadcasts that the taper, who worked for a local cable TV production company in the 1980s, monitored nightly for several years. Some of the programming is strictly regional, mostly from the San Diego area and some from New England.

    This note is for:
    Mr. Bob Elliot.
I was born & grew up in New Haven, Connecticut. There were many Diners close to home. My 💓 favorite was " Jimmy's at the Rock" or just Jimmy's dinner. My grandparents used to ake my sister & I there back in our toddler years. They had a real drive up & dine . It was at what was called then "Savin Rock", in West Haven, Conn. Locals called it Jimmy's at or the Rock. We were in our old Timmy p.j. jumsuits & grandpa would drive up & waitress took the order & brought the food out on tray ( or tray's) . They had the best lobster rolls in the world. It had the olden bar round stool's. Years later they built on a sit in dinning room. It was on the ocean & we could walk there from our high rise condo years later at West walk. Is it still there??? I would love to know. I did see a short clip on u-tube a few years about it!!! From New England; Katherine Hogan, x- miss Connecticut universe. Thank you for posting these memories of year's so sadly gone bye!!!!!!!

I remember watching this documentary with my father because there was talk about getting rid of the Farmington Diner and of moving Miss Portland. Saw Bob Elliot a couple times at MIss Portland. I'm glad to see that Bob lives on, even if in his work.

So I'm in the.process of trying to open an old school soda fountain. Home made ice cream, shakes, sundaes, malts. Different flavor soda syrups. A full breakfast menu and a basic lunch menu. Butter smash burgers, grilled hotdogs with buttered grilled new England style bun, home made pickles( my dads recipe) French dips, grilled cheese, pastrami, in peaked hand cut fries, and those potato swirl chips you get at the fair. With deep fat fryers going all the time for fried pickle chips, fried dough, fried Oreo, fried fluffernutter, corn dogs, add infinitum! Any opinions? My family thinks it will be a failure. Oh it has to be set in a college town and be open for the after bar crowds. So from midnite to 4 pm 6 days a week. Sunday prep and test kitchen.
