  • LNER 60007 Sir Nigel Gresley and the English Riviera Express graced us through Dawlish on Saturday, the 24th of June, 2023. The weather was perfect for the down journey, but the cloud started to come in for the return. Thanks to Colin and Nick Campbell for the additional footage.

Great to see SNG under steam again. I still have my Hornby-Dublo SNG train set from 1951. That's the old three-rail type. SNG has the number 7 on the side of the cab. I've seen SNG on a number of occasions over the years and it still takes my breath away. Such great lines and I love the new Blue livery. great Video. Thanks to all those who submitted footage of SNG as it transited through Dawlish. Keep up the good works.

I also have my same Nigel Gresley train set, my dad bought it for me in 1957 as my Xmas gift.
I finally got to see her in the metal and buy a ride behind her when she came to The Watercress Line in 1997, we went a few miles each way. Then we looked longingly in her cab and we both got invited up onto her footplate to looksee. A great day.

Fabulous vid of an amazing engine. I remember watching it along with Mallard and others as they passed near my home as a young lad on the ECML. Still the best looking engine ever, sorry Scotsman. Thanks for the memories.

Kingswear still has a working muscle powered turntable if only going as far as that where it is also coaled by bucket loader, watered by tanker and oiled by footplate staff. The carriages get hauled off to a siding to be serviced by the train staff and the kitchen/bar cars restocked. The diesel then hauls them back to the station having changed ends, it also provides additional electric power as they often have more than one kitchen car drawing a lot of power. These first/pullman class excursions often cost up to/over £350 p.p. Last summer many steam excursions had to use historic diesels as Network Rail had a steam ban due to the very dry conditions as didn't want any trackside wildfires. One day may get to do one and recount memories of the electric Brighton Belle Pullman as a child in the 50's. That 1920's/30's built train currently undergoing restoration having found the one missing carriage as part of a house! Some of the others on farms. Unfortunately will only be able to run excursions on 3rd rail traction lines.

The class 47 is used as a generator to power the train. It free wheels. it can be used as additional motive power in an emergency.
