- A quirk of the ‘English Riviera Express’ programme, operated by the Locomotive Services Group under their Saphos Trains banner, is that despite the tour operating regularly on Saturdays through the summer, each tour originates from a different start point. This edition saw Dorset take the spotlight as the tour started out of Poole. Sharing traction duties would be Ex-LNER A4 Class - 60007 “Sir Nigel Gresley”, and BR Class 47’s - 47593 “Galloway Princess” and D1935 "Roger Hosking MA 1925 - 2013".
The tour started out of Poole with 47593 at the helm, working through Bournemouth and Southampton to Eastleigh where the tour would head west through Romsey, joining the Wessex Mainline to Westbury. A reversal here would see D1935 take control, spearheading the tour to Taunton where 60007 would take up the reins. The tour would then continue south through Exeter and Paignton, and over onto the metals of the Dartmouth Steam Railway; working through to Kingswear. After reaching its destination, 60007 would work light to Churston to be turned and serviced before returning to Kingswear, ready to work the return leg to Taunton before being relieved for the remainder of the trip back to Poole. For operational convenience, 60007 would be stabled at Bishops Lydeard on the West Somerset Railway prior to, and after, working its sections of the tour.
Full advantage was taken of the Dorset origination, with 47593 captured leading the tour up Parkstone bank in the early morning. The 47 issued a subdued performance at in the sun at Horseshoe bridge in Southampton as it led the tour away from the Solent. This would be contrasted by the performance at Bapton, where 47593 laid down the power as it battled the rain heading away from Salisbury. Now with 60007 at the helm, the A4 put in a good show as it battled the elements striding up Whiteball bank, and latterly in blustery conditions at Saltern Cove on the Dartmouth Steam Railway. The pacific is then captured at Churston, being turned in readiness for the return leg of the tour, and subsequently back at the head of the consist in Kingswear. 60007 would then lift the tour away from the harbour, skirting the river Dart. Unfortunately, by the time 60007 reached Stoke Canon, a bank of thick cloud had rolled in denying onlookers the chance of an afternoon glint across the lines of the pacific has it headed away from Exeter. Finally, after nightfall, 47593 put on a charge as it led the tour through Hinton Admiral.

They should have a maroon Class 43 for power assist on A4 railtours, so there’s a wedge at both ends.

Great stuff, SNG looks a lot better in "BR Experimental Blue", ( just saying!!) Loving your turntable shots, thought one of those orange hi-viz gentleman was a dummy, he never moved from a leaning position during the whole operation😂😂 Matthew, thank you as always for putting up with our changeable weather and rushing around like the proverbial to bring us armchair warriors these magnificent shots so keeping us up to date with the outside world 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Thanks very much, Bob! It was nice to try something a little different from the format I usually follow with this tour.
Your kind words are always appreciated, it means a lot.
