Having thoroughly enjoyed our 11 night stay on the English Riviera in 2021 we re-booked for 2023, once again staying in Beverley Lodge in Goodrington Sands with Rebecca's parents, this time in the August summer holidays with our son now being in school. Last time this gave me the opportunity to film Tornado with 'The Royal Duchy' as well as a compilation video from the Dartmouth Steam Railway which can be seen from the Lodge. This year when the tour companies finalised their programmes it showed Saphos Trains had handily scheduled an 'English Riviera Express' for both Saturday's of our holiday!
This series of tours run throughout the year and all follow the same pattern, running diesel hauled from a wide variety of pick up points across Southern England as far as Taunton, where a steam loco based at the West Somerset Railway would take the tour from Taunton to Kingswear via Exeter and Newton Abbot. This years loco based for the summer is A4 no.60007 'Sir Nigel Gresley' in her first full year of railtour duties back in BR Blue since overhaul, having returned in 2022 running in wartime black attending a few galas and some London based tours at Christmas.
So to the day and our first of two chances to film 'The English Riveria Express', Saturday 5th August. A blip was on the horizon in the shape of Storm Antoni, who promised rain and strong winds, up to 50mph gusts in places in the afternoon. Originally I had planned to film the return starting off from Kingswear but having two opportunities decided to save that for next week, planning instead on focusing on the three big climbs, Goodrington Sands on the outward leg and Greenway then Torre on the return.
Setting up in the face of a strong NW wind we first see 'Sir Nigel Gresley' climb Goodrington Bank from the SW Coast path above the beach, the wind thankfully bringing the sound into the microphone as she climbs the bank with the diesel ticking over on the rear. After lunch in Costa and a play on the beach in increasing winds it was soon time for the return. Setting up on Greenway Road in Galmpton we see 'Sir Nigel Gresley' tackle the reverse curves through Greenway Station working hard towards Churston. Using the time it took for 'Sir Nigel Gresley' to pass the service train and change crews and pick up at Paignton we had plenty of time to move to Torre. We see 'Sir Nigel Gresley' work hard through the station climbing Torre Bank towards Newton Abbot. All in all a very nice day, thanks as always to everyone involved in tour!

Amazing shots with Grezzer taking her long train along the P&DR. When will they take that blasted headboard off though?!

I've seen her a few times since she came back from overhaul and she seems to be running fine! I don't think the diesel was pushing much at Goodrington or Greenway, don't forget the Saphos set has air-con coaches in it so the diesel is on to power those, perhaps it was taking its own weight as well. I think it was just starting to up to give a final push over the hill at Torre but its a steep climb, 12 and a not pushing 47 is getting on for load 14 as well so probably beyond most locos up Torre, I think its 1 in 59 or something!
