Five Nights at Freddy's: The Story of Scott Cawthon
Vložit
- čas přidán 11. 09. 2024
- Five Nights at Freddy’s is a wonderful example of how negative criticism can be turned into something incredible.
The story is often told among FNAF fans of how the original game’s creator, Scott Cawthon, decided to create a horror game after hearing, to his dismay, that his child-friendly characters looked like creepy animatronics.
There’s a lesson here for all of us about how to take criticism, but more than that, Scott’s story is an example of how sometimes it takes years of work, and constant failure, before we’ll see any success from our efforts. The question is not how many times we fail, but how we keep ourselves going until we eventually achieve our dreams.
Scott Cawthon receives some flak from the gaming community for the speed at which he releases games, but as someone with a short creative attention span myself, I can appreciate the need to work quickly and finish small games in order to feel a sense of achievement more regularly. Indie game making, much like comic art (my own area of expertise) can be a lonely passion, and Scott shouldn’t be blamed for choosing projects that fit his own ideal work patterns.
While Scott has spoken publicly about his faith in many interviews, I almost left this part of his story out of the video, for fear that too much focus on Christian beliefs, might alienate viewers, or make people feel uncomfortable. If this is the case, I apologize, but I ultimately felt that it was necessary to include this, as a big part of Scott Cawthon’s journey as a developer came from drawing strength from his own convictions. Hopefully, even if you don’t share Scott’s world view, you can appreciate a need to feel happy with the direction your life before you can be at peace with your creative choices.
I will admit to reading between the lines a little in this story - based on the comments from you guys, I get the feeling that, like me, you’ll take strength from Scott’s story, and as such, while he may not have always made a big deal in interviews of the difficulties of juggling work and family with game design, I feel the inclusion of this within the video accurately reflects what he experience must have been, as it likely does for many of us who are still working to make our dreams a reality.
I also admit that neither of us have ever actually played a Five Nights at Freddy’s game - I’m (Kotor) not really into horror games, and BretonStripes if anything loves horror titles a bit too much, so she’s avoided these kinds of games since Slender in order to avoid losing sleep.
We were really taken by Scott Cawthon’s story, though, and his experience as an indie developer seemed perfect for us to share with you all, based on your comments. Plus, it was fun to tell the story of a game that was solely made by one person. We’ll probably do a few more indie titles in future.
Finally, if you’ve made it this far down the wall of text, congratulations! We have a question for you - we’re considering introducing some other kinds of content to the channel, in order to fill in the gaps between videos. These might be documentaries, interviews, reviews, or gaming news analysis. Is this something you’d like to see, or would you rather we stick to the current format for content?
Just to be clear, this wouldn’t be replacing the main videos, it’s just that these take a lot of time to produce, and we might like to try giving you something every week instead of shooting for every other week if we’re lucky. Let us know your thoughts, and what kinds of content you might like to see, in the comments.
If you’d like to learn more about Scott Cawthon, research for this video came from this interview: indiegamemag.co...

You don't have to like FNAF. At all. But regardless, you have to appreciate what a wonderful guy Scott is. He has done so much, been through so much, and as many said he shows a great example of taking the positive from a negative! I don't care what people say about FNAF, they can have their opinions. But I will forever love the franchise and it has a special place in my life, and it makes me so happy that Scott is happy too. I truly hope he's proud of all his work because he deserves the love from the loyal fans, or anyone, really!!
Elsa Oh of course, I'm not saying I don't. I do respect their opinions! Though a lot of times, people express their opinions in such a childish way, it's hard to take them seriously and try to understand what they're saying. But people will always hate FNAF, which is fine. They don't have to like it! But then again, people will always love it! So it's only fair to respect that people dislike it, and for the people that dislike it, it's only fair that they respect the people who do enjoy it. Let people live their lives, y'know?
Well said! Couldn't have said it better myself
I think that the only reason fnaf gets a ton of hate at times is the fanbase, which I don't blame the haters too much on honestly. Mostly because the fanbase is nothing but furry chica rule 34

Man... Scott's story, his spirituality, and his busy schedule mirror's mine. I pretty much gave up in the last year as well. I wouldn't have picked it back up had it not been for your videos, and incessant dreams to keep going.
Thank you again. And always.
Question... How would you do documentaries that would be distinct from what these stories are? Interviews may be a strong suit for your channel because you focus on humanizing the people who work behind the scenes. Game reviews/news analysis may actually detract from the inspirational and community building aspects of your channel.
+Paolo Munoz I've almost given up a3 few times myself. It's why I started doing more inspirational art. I need the encouragement myself!
I think you're right about the different content for the channel. News, reviews and analysis is something I'd love to do, but it's probably not the right direction. I'll stick with the typical videos for now, and maybe start my own second channel later on.
As far as documentaries go, that probably wasn't the right word. I kind of want to do reports from various gamer events that I attend. For example, there's a retro games market that I'll be attending next month, and I was thinking of doing a video about it, showing the stalls and interviewing artists and developers and sellers and attendees. That said, I don't have a camera that works well enough. I was going to use BretonStripes' camera, but it got stolen so that's not going to work. Maybe we can do these kinds of videos at a later date instead.
If you do start a second channel, I'll be sure to spread the news about it as best I can!
Do you have games that are out there that I could look at too? Would love to see your work!
You should really tweet these videos at Chris DeLeon of Gamkedo. He works in encouraging game developers and trying to help sharpen their skills. I'm sure he'd appreciate these videos and share them as well.
+Paolo Munoz Oh, I've never made a game! I'm not technically minded enough to manage that. But you can see our gaming comics at lifeloveandvideogames.com. Maybe one day I'll try making a game, I have an idea for one, but I'd need a lot of time to learn how to make it, so it won't he any time soon.
These are great comics. I can see how your style has evolved over time and I really like the new style you have been using! And you guys have a Patreon? You really need to let people know about it!
The guy who said the mean comment must feel embarrassed
LOL, TRUE.
If I remember right, that negative review was Jim Sterling of the Jimquisition. He actually released a video not long ago stating that he was proud of Scott for taking his critical review and doing something positive with it, and wishes more developers would be like that.
+ Kenya Starflight He compared the characters to creepy animatronics so Scott decided to make a horror game with creepy animatronics.

His games are great, and I don't care what people say about his games, because from what I've seen from the early and later titles, he's been doing a fantastic job. I don't care if people think that his games are stupid or horribly made, because they're wrong, he's been making great and well made games over the years. I almost cried when I watched this video, because he has a family that he needs to support and yet he couldn't make any money to support them. Scott now: Should I take out the spine out of the main character with a weird machine, which will brutally kill him, or should I crash his bones and squeeze hiz organs in a metal suit meant to be wore only by a robot, which will brutally kill him too?
The name of this video should be: "the story of a legendary gamemaker"
I hope Scott is okay, he doesn't deserve this kind of hate. Even now with people cheering that he quit. The man worked hard and is an inspiration.
I really love how this entire franchise is just a "I'll show you!"
I feel like I can relate to Scott in a way with what he went through, in my case though, I've always wanted to become a story writer, it's been my passion since 2008. But I started to feel unmotivated, and I felt like my stories I wrote weren't good at all and people only said they were good just to not hurt my feelings, not to mention I used to be in middle school back then so it didn't give me time to work on my stories, it made me unmotivated more and more and more, so I quit. But then until the year 2011, I just couldn't get those stories off my mind, and I then I decided to try again, and to just keep improving as time goes on. Unfortunately, I've never gotten any of my stories fully done, but I feel like it just takes patience, the longer I do it, the more I can improve it. I've been doing this for so long that I literally can't forget any details anymore, I got the stories entirely written in my mind, it's just hard to find the right words to display it in text. The longer I do it, I'll eventually find the right moment to release my stories to the public. Scott is such a huge inspiration to us all, Scott Cawthon and his games actually changed my life as a person, and I truly thank him so much for that.
Never. Give. Up.
I can relate to that to. I'm also a story writer
He will be remembered. Thank you, scott.
God showed this man his destiny
True that, brother
:)
@Mr.FuhrerAndGas Yeah
This was really well made! Scott's story is certainly a great one.
"A simple horror game"
Matpat: *Am i a joke to you*
Where would we be now if instead of the comment saying:
"The protagonist looks like a creepy animatronic."
It said:
"I love your art style. You should keep making games!
Video Game Story Time, I never knew Scott Cawthon was religious.
Just came back to pay my respects to the legend himself and Scott Cawthon
Yeah
We should perhaps stay away from Twitter. Twitter clowns, you all know what you're doing!
Scott Cawthon: *pulls out bible*
Fnaf: that’s heresy
2007: “Look at this dude thinking he’ll make something out of creating video games”.
2021: “We're waiting every night to finally roam and invite
Newcomers to play with us
For many years we've been all alone We're forced to be still
And play the same songs we've known since that day
An imposter took our life away
Now we're stuck here to decay
Please let us get in
Don't lock us away
We're not like what you're thinking
We are poor little souls
Who have lost all control
And we're forced here to take that role
We've been all alone
Stuck in our little zone since 1987
Join us, be our friend
Or just be stuck and defend
After all you only got
Five Nights at Freddy's
Is this where you wanna be?
I just don't get it
Why do you want to stay?
Five Nights at Freddy's
Is this where you wanna be?
I just don't get it
Why do you want to stay?
Five Nights at Freddy's!”
Scott Cawthon is one of the most nicest and underrated developers. I feel bad that he got cancelled and hated on by idiotic people, he seems like a nice guy!
Honestly, Scott is a master of his work. From the troll games he made, to the Ultimate Custom Night, he can put together a masterpiece and the most complicated lore. Five Nights at Freddy’s has truly made a mark on gaming history.
And imagine all the people who worked harder than him but never got credit for their work...
Another great video, I'm also glad you kept the part with his religious faith. While for very dumb reasons its taboo on the internet and how its been depicted, spiritual inspiration is a great story to share.
+DKen2021 I'm glad you appreciated the religious side of things! I'm also Christian, and I have to say I feel like my faith helps me a lot as an artist, too.
Video Game Story Time what's with all the gas?
Must say I agree! Scott is so inspiring!
DKen2021 that couldn't be more true.
Agreed
and even after all these years, he's still going strong. as a christian and a bedroom game dev myself he truly is an inspiration to me. hope to see him grow even further as both a person and an indie game icon
He made games for his children. I wish I had a dad like this dude.
Scoot cawthon had the best comeback ever. It was like oh you think my cute animals are scary well how do you like a entire horror franchise to inspire other horror games and scare you even more
Scott: "hey i think it would be funny to make a horror game"
*2 days later*
Scott: "i'm swmming in mon"
(Sees thumbnail)
(Imagines)
Bonnie: (Jumpscare noise)
Scott: HOLY-
I stan Both Scott Cawthon and Mat Dickie! The two independent game developers who sell millions of best selling games from the hard work they got from constant criticism they get,I salute u two!
I feel so bad for Scott, I'm really happy he succeeded and made such a successful franchise
I love his fnaf games
Ghostella Banette
i love ALL his games
Ghostella Banette me too
Me to on night 4 on fnaf 1
Same
Anti-Furry Fnaf isn’t recommended to be furries, they are animatronics for kids. Stop ruining the concept please.
This guy felt like a failure. Scott was a Christian and had made many family friendly games to no success, and his last one was heavily criticized and made fun of. He started questioning his faith and started having suicidal thoughts and his mind went to a very dark place. It is in this darkness that he created... Five Nights at Freddy's.
Creators often express themselves through art or music. Scott expressed himself by making a legendary game-he even made a detailed backstory to it, which gave it a cult following. FNaF is a reflection of where Scott's creative mind was at the time, and it really shows-The game is absolutely terrifying and immersive. He deserves all the praise he gets for this game, because it is truly one of the most iconic indie games of all time.
Scott Cawthon and his creations were the foundation of my younger years. Don't know where I'd be, without The Desolate Hope and Five Nights at Freddy's.
I feel so sorry for Scott, he didn't deserve anything that has recently happened to him :/.
As for Twitter, *let's get you fixed with a controller shock*
Twitter need to be at the scooping room (:
@@This_dumb_guy lol this takes me back to a better time, thanks
also twitter deserves the scooping room more than ever
@@gerardonavarro3400 haha no problem :)
And yes, but problem is that twitter always comme back 🥲
From children's games to terrifying horror games......
Scott,you inspire me ;)
Scott is a huge inspiration. He inspired me to be one of the things I am. He also inspires that 1 person can do many things. Bless him.
scott’s story is beautiful, and you did a great job illustrating its beauty with this video!!!
I am so happy i found this video and that i wish Scott himself could see this! :D
Newborn Legacy Yah me too
"How inspirational do you want to be?"
Scott: "yes"
This was awesome! Scott's story is a story that should be shared with people.
And, as usual, this was really inspiring....and, yes, relatable (sorry if my saying that over and over is getting old :P)
I can relate to both of you on the short creative attention span. It's something I'm still trying to learn to work with, since I too often look at my simpler ideas and think "if I were in the position of the reader/player of this, would it really be satisfying to me on its own? ehhhhh...." Although that tends to be more of a problem with comics than video games, since I mainly read comics that are part of ongoing series with consistent art styles. With video game ideas the trouble's just been fully figuring out a plan I can work with :P
I can say I've had times where I've wondered if I should quit over and over again.....deciding exactly what the best thing to do with my life is has been tough so far. But these video keep reassuring me that I'll figure things out eventually :)
Anyway, sorry for yet another long rant.....These videos always make me do a lot of thinking I guess.
+Nerd Chaos We love your long rants, never apologise! I get what you mean about having a short attention span, that's why I always used to do short three panel comics rather than bigger pieces.
I don't think there's anything wrong with trying lots of different approaches to find what works best for you. CZcams is just the latest in a long line of projects I've tried. But it's good to experiment with different things. As long as you're willing to push through with a project when a new idea occurs to you. That's probably the most difficult problem, and I still feel guilty about not having more time for my webcomic because I'm working on these videos now instead!
Thanks for the encouragement and advice, as always :)
Out of curiosity, whenever I manage to figure out what kind of project would fit what I want to do, any chance you'd have any interest in maybe helping me with the art for it? I really like your art style, and I think it would work really well for whatever I might come up with.
Someone online: your designs are terrifying!
Scott: you haven’t seen anything yet... ha ha ha... haha..Haha...AHAHHAHAHAHHAHAHAAH
I really liked this. Your voice is clear and nice to listen to. The story sounded pretty concise too. Great work ! Thanks for posting this video for us :-)
This might sound weird but I like all his games
Golden Sun
me too
Jakub Skácel thanks for agreeing🙂
Golden Sun you get a a diamond heart💙
It’s been a hell of a ride.
Scott Christian: *also makes unholy animatronics in a game*
Me: ahh yes
I mean, he had no other choice, people hated his games.
