First match experience - How to start shooting competitions

- One of the most common questions I get asked is "How do I start shooting competitions"... Just do it! Follow along with Kyle's first match in the video above, and read my top 10 tips for getting started at your first match here: farewellfirearms.com/first-ma...
Seriously, take a look at the matches in your area by visiting www.PractiScore.com, and then show up. Even if you just come out and watch for the first time and meet some people and ask questions, that will get you started way faster than watching a hundred videos about it. Regardless of whether you're looking for USPSA, IPSC, IDPA, 3-Gun, Steel Challenge or some other form of competitive shooting, go find a match and get after it!

This video helped me not be so nervous about being the “new guy” thanks for showing a first timer
I’ve watched a lot of beginner videos. This walkthrough is the one I needed, not someone sitting in a chair describing the event.
Hell yeah! That was the goal with this one!
Awesome job
I am interested in doing this
I ran across this channel by accident. I am a 68 year old three time cancer survivor and I am still shooting. My love for the sport has never waned. The future of our sport lies with the younger folks. I am signed up for a match later this month, and 50% of the shooters are seniors, super seniors, and distinguished seniors. That's bad. A sincere thank you to you guys for supporting the sport. For those who want to try the sport but don't have a support group to help you through, there are allowances in the rules for coaching (preferably by the RO) for new shooters. They will be happy to let you know if you run by a target, get close to the 180, etc.
You're absolutely right! Thank you for the kind words and the effort you've put into the sport.
My buddy is taking me out to do a match this weekend. I've always shot firearms stationary. I'm nervous because it isn't a normal setting that I am usually in when firing my handguns. This will definitely be out of my comfort zone until I go through at least once to see what it's really like. I'm going to take this experience like any other's when first timing with firearms. Safety first, then relax and have fun.
Got my first steel challenge and uspsa matches coming up soon. Cant wait to start!
That’s awesome!
This is how you build the sport! ❤
Very cool and helpful video. I’m really interested in getting started and have found a few USPSA competitions in my area.
It was good to see a video of a first timer with real nerves saying some of the things I’m thinking as I consider getting started.
Thanks for the video!
Absolutely! Side note, I have two courses for getting into competitive shooting, an intro and a full blown deep dive. Check them out at www.DryfireMastery.com
Great stuff and well done! I’m totally jealous that he got to hang out and shoot with you one on one!
Working up for my first match the beginning of 2024 , great video & super insightful for anyone considering it or just wanting to know how it works. 🤙
Awesome! Let me know how it goes! Also, stay tuned for the new Dryfire Mastery course dropping next week which will give you everything you need to work on before the match.
@@Joe_Farewell will be on the lookout 👌
For someone who would like to do this, I appreciate this vid….super helpful.
Great shooting and excellent one on one advise. I had the same experience with my first steel challenge match. Makes the world of difference when that first "Shooter ready... BEEP" goes off...
Absolutely!
Great video Joe. Heavily considering doing matches this video definitely gets me more excited to do so.
Looks like you had a blast. Thank you for sharing.
Super valuable. Appreciate the video.
Thanks for the video!
You're welcome!
This was good prep before I go watch a match in person to help me figure out what's going on. Next is competing for my first time!!
Awesome! Welcome to the crew!
@@Joe_Farewell thanks!
Great video. Awesome that you worked with someone new to competition. Looks like you are in Utah.😊
That’s exactly where I was haha. Glad you enjoyed it!
Love the video. Hoping to shoot my first USPSA match sometime this year. Quick question, can you run you holster and mag pouches off your standard dress belt or do you have to have a special belt?
Awesome! To answer your question, yes you can run it off any belt. The main thing is your holster is secure.
I get interested in participating in one of these competitions, then I’m like “damn these seem complicated”.
They aren't that complicated! Stay tuned because I have a full online course on competitive handgun coming next week to www.DryfireMastery.com!
Do you have a recommendation for the best shot timer app for a smartphone? Nobody has done a video about which app is the best
Do you have a recommendation for a shot timer app for iPhone or Android? Nobody has done a video about which one is the best.
👍
Ok…..going to my first match in a couple weeks. I really like my 1911 Springfield ….it has an optic. Have a Bul Armory Axe C Hatchet with optic on in……any suggestions?
The 1911 will put you into limited optics so you’ll be competing with guys shooting 9mm with 23+ rounds in the mag. The Bul might put you in limited optics as well, but most likely you can shoot carry optics with it.
Either way you’re not going to win, so pick what you want to run and go have fun!
I know that range very well. Where you in town for a little bit?
I was a year and a half ago when I filmed that haha. Also last weekend briefly.
Were you guys shooting in LO? Or open?
When we shot this LO wasn’t a thing and since we both have compensated guns it put us in open.
Late comment, I wanna dabble in USPSA to be better shooting practically. Would it be retarded to do it with my duty gun (including light)?
No. Especially for a first time, just go and check it out. Some people shoot for practice with what they use...
Be safe, get good hits, go faster next time.
Farewell? Are you Eric's brother?
Eric is my brother lol
Why dose the RO not have ear muffs 💀
He does have ear plugs. Just hard to see.
promosm ☹️
Guy is shooting a 2011 with no comp. Either race or don’t
Actually both of us had comped 2011 so I'm not sure what you're referring to. Either troll or don't. 😂
Really enjoyed this thanks guys
