First man ever to call this “simple”. Literally some of the most complicated, advanced drumming I’ve ever heard.
The man said SIMPLE 🤣🤣
I was searching for this comment
Of course for you it is complex. You're a commoner.
Name Surname lol! Yes, yes I am.
I think by "simple" he means "not overplayed".
Danny did not go to Berklee. Berklee went to Danny.
Berklee*
@@crzes9702 thanks!
Danny is the Chuck Norris of Drumming
Far out. Straight Facts. Let that sink in.
You have a great ear and your observations are incredible. This was recorded just before Danny turned 59. He's 6' 5" and 250+pounds and still plays the hell out of them. The sound that sounded like the tabla was played on a Korg Wd 1 wave drum. The thing behind him is called a Marimba Lumina and the keys denote the strike zones. It's played with special mallets and is controlled by a MIDI and integrated to a synth that holds the different sounds he can assign to each zone. Underneath is a 40" Paiste symphonic gong. Most of the China is Paiste. He has 7 Mandala pads, 4 to his left and 3 to his right. Each has 128 strike points with 7 concentric circles that each can be programmed. His snare is an 8"×14" cast bronze drum made by VK and weighs 44lbs.he has 8" and a 14" rack tom above his high hat. The floor toms are 14" and 16" and his two bass drums are 22" and 24". He also has a Rowland hand sonic, that I don't think he used in this song. There is a live recording of Invincible and he uses the Marimba Lumina at the beginning,. Loved your reaction and thoughts.✌🤘
Amazing break-down.... thanks for these details. Danny is a legend.
@@ksteak27 , your more than welcome. Unfortunately this is about the only drum cam video worth your time. You should still check out some more Tool songs as Danny's playing is always spot on. The band incorporates a lot of polyrhythems and time signature changes. Their song Schism has 47 time changes. Try to find lyric videos as the official videos will distract you. Don't get me wrong they're interesting to say the least, but for a 1st listen I wouldn't recommend them. Hope you dive in the rabbit hole. Tool is incredible and they really don't have a bad song. Subbed to see more of what else you got. ✌🤘
Very well explained and yes, don't react to offical Tool videos but check them out later and lyrics are a must on your phone or something. I can't believe you know Danny's kit so well. I heard him say he just got a new kit... Do you know anything about it?
@@Ogt92 , if I'm not mistaken his new kit is made by Paiste. The are cast bronze and created from broken cymbals that's used as part of the alloy to make the bronze. In other words they are extremely heavy. I believe he uses the VK Tempest cast bronze snare and at other times his Sonar snare of similar construction and weight. He breaks 2 to 3 drum heads a night and has to switch them out. Not unusual for a 6'5" behemoth who is also known for snapping kick pedals in half.🤣✌🤘
Thanks for all the tec info! For real very informative
Damn, so many people attacking him for calling it simple. If you listened to the context of how he was saying it he means simple in that it’s relatively stripped back especially at that spot as opposed to going crazy with fast fills. Sometimes less is more.
Thanks You brother!! 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽 You took the words out of my mouth!
A lot of ppl are misguided in thinking complicated means good.
Tool fans have lots of passion. Plz forgive them.
For us tool is filled with complexity. Maynard's lyrics are amazing and tragic. My favorite album 10000 days was from his mother spending that time paralyzed.
Also much is influenced from revelation.
Adam Jones is legendary on guitar.
Danny Carey is goat. Up there with Bonham.
I really like your review and the tool army is massive. I think you should review more tool
marcus s no love for Justin?
@@dasapples Justin is the "ivy league professor" of bass. Master. It's just fandom algorithm. The bassist is always in the background. Lol. He is killer though. I think each artist in the band brings their own unique energy and sound to the band. That is what makes tool. A collective of many which become one. Down to the artists that work on the visuals of the shows and graphics of the merch.
Truth. Danny actually traveled the world for over 2 years to learn multiple drumming techniques. Tribal areas, cities, clubs, small shows etc. He did a ton of research and practice to get to this point. 58 years old and still killing it. Big time.
When he referred to some parts as simple, I didn't get a negative vibe at all. Pretty sure he just meant it was tight/in the pocket.
Meemorp exactly. So many people took offense to it. Lmao.
I agree it wasn't negative, just didn't comprehend what he was watching.
Yeah Danny is great at not overplaying. It's really easy to get lost in the lyrics, or the texture and atmosphere from the guitar and bass, and lose conscious awareness of the drumming.
Also: just look how organized Carey is behind the kit. This man has a very efficient setup and posture. Even when he’s doing all those tom fills, look at how little his torso moves. He has so little wasted movement, it truly is amazing.
"Simple" "couple little time signature things" "that little roll" - ROFLMAO . This review is laughable to be honest.
Danny Carey is officially listed as number 29 of the best drummers to have ever existed on the planet. He's considered a top 10 drummer today. I put him as a top 5.
whos #1?
29? blasphemy.
#29 for whom ?
And this one is not even mentionned :
czcams.com/video/Lo0FxtTceTI/video.html&ab_channel=MAGMACHILE2013
Danny is definitely the best drummer alive. Absolutely amazing.
You have no idea what you're about to get into! You're in for a ride! The best ride you'll ever experience, music wise.
its to simple for him.... he prefer grande, swift, gaga or bieber... and all that other difficult stuff...
I first heard/saw tool in Tijuana in 1992. I was mesmerized and will never forget. They tossed Opiate tapes into the crowd. I still have mine
I will trade you a high five for it. Top gun style!
Danny was either 58 or 59 during this performance. Pretty damn good shape, not to mention his other worldly drumming skills.
There is nothing like seeing TOOL live in concert it will change you!
Saw them in KC and they literally make it all about the music and concert visuals.
@@kip1512 that's for sure. I seen them in Tulsa Oklahoma can't wait for them to come back
@@derekspipesandcigars1892 I saw them In tulsa on the fear innocullum tour and was in a trance in my seat the whole time. Why buddy thought I wasn't having fun, I was just at church.
@@uns33n man that's awesome same here brother can't wait for them to come back 🤘🤘
By "simple" I think Danny has a very good knack of making a simple polyrhythm look effortless and to a degree, simple. Of course it is not, but drummers can play a whole lot of speed and it seem complex, but it is not. Likewise, you can play something with far less going on, like the verse of Pneuma, and it is quite difficult to replicate exactly. Many times I've listened to Tool and said "that beat seems easy" only to try it and realize that it is absolutely not.
Right to me this is weak compared to other tracks he plays on.
Danny is sneaky in his complexity
Why are people attacking him for calling it simple? The way said it means that it's tight and not overbearing or overpowering the other instruments. The sound is simple but effective in the overall performance
Nothing simple about it. He weaves a tapestry of rhythm.
Simple comments from simple people, nuff said.
To me if you listen this is simple compared to other song he goes ham on. This is a stroll in the park for Danny
@@lrwiersum you are confusing simple with easy. Is not the same at all.
@ 100% with you there. Simplicity is often difficult.
i love how you're more impressed by the musicality than the technicality
Never apologize for saying "I don't know much about Tool", the mainstream fans are right along with you, and the Tool Army just gets excited watching someone discover. :)
bruh. he's working on a level that most of the top musicians in the world can't comprehend.
Great reaction mate, Danny Carey is a technical drummer that makes it look simple, but his musicality is off the charts.
As you can see, atheists are wrong. God is not dead, he's just busy playing drums.
As an atheist, I can get on board with this theory. 👍
Im agnostic... well, was....
lol
well sign me up to this religion
@@greybush1976 Same.
Finally someone took the tiny picture so we can sew full screen Danny
"he's got some nice arms man" hahah
I loved your reaction. I'm a die hard tool fan since 92. Their music has grown over the years from anger to melodic musical genius. It's been an amazing journey. I've seen many reactions and yours was the first to notice all the different cultural influences in Danny Carrey's drumming. He is actually heavily influenced by jazz and plays a lot of jazz on the side. Open minds like yours with no preconceived notions really helps me see a band I've known and still love in a different way with your honest interpretation. Thank you for that.
I hope you don't wear Vans and 501s...
You have just witnessed one of the Best Drumpers in world to Date.
“I hope he hit that gong” best ever!!!!
Laughed so hard when you mentioned you liked the ‘simplicity’..
AWSOME review of an amazing song by the Dopest drummer alive today!!!!!
Danny carey, 1 of the best💚
Octopus, aint no simple
Not just an everyday drummer here buddy. He’s a true percussionist and a great one! One of the best alive today!!!
As a drummer you can better tell how the difficulty of playing those polyrhythms, your brain is working over 9000 in those situations, he's a beast...
Right on man. You’ll love hearing more Tool. Danny is a master at his craft.
Metronome: "I'm always on time."
Danny Carey: "Are you sure about that?"
"Legend has it Danny made a deal with the devil. No one knows what Danny got, but the devil got drum lessons." -not mine. no credit to me
love this.
I'm borrowing this, sorry
This is the 4th reaction of this video I've seen where you've commented this. It is my favorite factual statement about Danny Carey.
@@The.Breakfast.Burrito I think i first saw it written on a reaction from someone by the name 1000something. From then I started writing it as well because it's one of my favorites as well.
"Simple as that" he is one of the best drummers alive
I'm not sure if Danny plays any other instruments like piano or anything, but he's definitely properly trained in the world of percussion and is very influenced by Indian percussion like you said. As far as the basketball jersey goes, he wears a different one for each city he's in.
That man is 58 when this was recorded! RESPECT!!!!
Bro, react to more tool. Just LISTEN. Youll be pleasantly surprised
Nah
More Tool; more Subscribers; more views. On top of it, your world is about to change. By the way, you just jumped into the deep end. This is one of the most complex songs they have written. Welcome to the “Tool Army”. The rest of the Tool Army will guide you.
He is a christian, i doubt he will like them.
@@dregnar85 One of Tool's more popular songs is about Maynard James Keenan's mother's faith in the face of a long running illness and how it influenced his own. They aren't biting the heads off bats up there.
Watch iron maiden- rock and rio (2000)
Drummers reacting to this video is incredibly entertaining 😍 Thank you for posting 👌🙌🤪 Danny Carey is dope!
This is the best reaction I've come across cause you're describing things I've never heard of and looked up afterword so I learned something. Thanks!
That’s what’s it all about. Each one teach one. Glad you learned something yo
He's wearing a Celtics jersey because he loves basketball and played center in college. He wears the hometown team's jersey wherever he plays and a lot of people donate them to him.
I'm surprised by the Celtics Jersey even still, he's such a huge Lakers fan, lol.
He's not talk enough to play center.
Less than a minute in and I already know this is going to be good. Such a positive vibe, man!
Bro. Just clicked. You’re wearing a Star Wars shirt and you’re a drummer. Instant sub. Also watching Danny Carey gives you MANY bonus points
The sections from 7:44 - 13:00 contain some of the craziest drumming I've seen to date. I've watched this performance countless times at this point and the buildup and climax sections always amaze me. There are some fills I always have to rewind and watch again in half speed.
When he said ' simple ' , that's when I came to see the comments. Not disappointed
“It’s simple” ?!?!
This guy is beating out 4 different time signatures with each of his limbs while the rest of the band is playing a 5th.
Its simple. Everything is tight. No wasted energy or motion. Every movement has a purpose. Easy to follow along and listen to. SIMPLE.
@@kaelanbradford3664 Im still a beginner drummer and i wish i knew what you meant by this haha i dont understand the terminology yet.
As soon as you said terry bozzio I was like…. Yes a drummer with some chops!! Funk and jazz was my bread and butter. Love it. This man has some serious skills.
Danny is not just a giant in terms of height and build but he's also a massive fucking drummer. One of my favorite drummers for sure
Danny Carey is the G.O.A.T.
Danny was in Boston for this performance. That's why he has the outfit. He does similar things with most cities they perform in.
Enjoyed the video, Danny is just out of the world... one of my favorite gong parts in tool is during the song, Descending... it’s only once and it’s in a perfect spot...
You said simple, really. 6'5" , 60 year old ninja. What a giant!!
Everyone: What time signature are they in? Me: Yes
You are first drummer who didn’t go crazy trying to figure out his time signatures
Whaaaatever... I could play this with my eyes closed (because I'd be asleep and dreaming). But I could watch this 100 times, that much I really could do.
I’d hardly call it simple!!!!!!!
"Ticks and Leeches" is some of Danny's beat drumming for Tool. He also has his own percussion peice called Chocolate Chip Trip. It's an evolving peice.
Your observation, on how the mid section of the intro sounds like Lose Yourself had me going crazy. Hahahaha, had to subscribe.
I almost jumped out of my chair when you called it simple.
This man is also 59! Mad respect
New music to the ear is always a good thing...
Love watching people the first time they hear TOOL
Danny's fills get you in the feels.
Great video. God bless you. I hope your channel takes off.
Great vid.. great Steve Smith shout out.. love journey too.. This song is DOPE! TOOL IS DOPE!
Always special to see drummers react to this. As a bassist I know some awesome dudes pulling the strings. Not even one of them impressed me that much like this guy kicking the s**t out of his kit. I mean, I know Tool for 20 years now. But, come on, you know how studio recording works. To actually see him doing all this is totally different.
Cool to hear your perspective. I thought you as a reacter come off super humble. When you called it simple I was surprised but I honestly assumed that was just a result of your looking at it with a different understanding of drum theory than I have (as I have nowhere near a pro level of drumming ability) and not saying simple in a negative way. You obviously have a lot of respect for Danny's talent.
Thanks for the review. Simple can mean so many things but most people tend to take it as offensive which was never my intent. I clearly was in awe of Danny's awesome approach to drumming and now I have a ton of respect for his craft.
The breath of life
Probably the best reaction I've seen to this video. You're technical knowledge of drumming is obvious and you compared him to Bozzio, which made me happy. There's a bunch of Bruford in there as well.
Rich the Ancient Metal Beast
Lol Danny is a giant GIANT Lakers fan. I was at this show in Boston. This closed the first set. He came out after intermission in a Lakers uni for the comedy of getting booed in Boston Garden. Danny laughed his ass off.
Your awesome, I enjoyed your reaction to Danny Carey, I wanna see you rock the house with some gospel!!
The hi-hat keeping the timing with these crazy pollyrythems, and when the guitars change it up, so does he on the drum fills/pollyrythems later in song...
YESSSSSSSSSSSS thanks bro.... you rock!
Hey man, I was at this show. It was at td garden in Boston. They always kill it live. Glad you gave it a full listen. Danny absolutely smashes.
And next you should check out triad or ticks and leaches from tool.
My man said simple at 7:11...lol...theres NOTHING simple about this masterpiece!! 😃😳😁
Cant wait for you to do more tool!!
That drum track was anything but simple.
I commend you on going outside your comfort zone with this. The best musicians draw influences from as many genres as possible.
Danny wears the basketball jersey of the city they are playing at!
His double stroke roll to single is so smooth.
GOAT
Danny's is great but the title of GOAT belongs to Neil.

Peart was awesome and Danny was tore up when he passed, but originality-wise I'd say Danny is above Peart. Peart just played with raw power.
I agree with you everything he's doing is so simple.
I'm a bass player and, about 3 years ago, I had to play a tool song called "Lateralus". One of my favorite... and a nightmare to my brain lollll.
This cracks me up first guy to call this simple drumming haha
I can appreciate how you keep the doing going instead of cutting it up
Awesome that you mentioned Terry Bozzio, another incredible drummer.
Enjoyed that reaction, thanks
i enjoyd Your reaction! thank You
it was a honor to watch it with You!
thank You!!!!!!!!!
Thank you! Many people took my comments out of context and tried to make it seem like I was diminishing Danny's awesome art. I actually admire it and have incorporated some of his ideas into my playing. SIMPLE isn't bad, it actually the latter. Ask countless great composers and artist.
I'm not a drummer, but I feel like you HAVE to have that kind of posture to be a good drummer...
Dude! Your reaction was flipping awesome! As you are a gospel drummer, I would like to share and give a shout out to abundant faith in Springfield IL. I experienced pastor doss speaking of repentance and we are all children of Noah. Anyway, I started to go af because if his word. The band kept playing after we greeted one another...that fucking jam into the fade out was epic! Seriously in my team picture of best all time! That was over 20 years ago. Double shout out to the jam!
Danny Carey is simply the best drummer alive today.
I agree
That is def an electric vibe/marimba set up. He went to a music conservatory... He's just an amazing dude. I watched him on this tour live... He gets like 30 minutes worth of stage time all to himself 😁
This performance was in Boston.
In San Antonio, some years back, he wore a Tim Duncan jersey.
Tool is one of the best prog out there. It was very funny when you called it simple where most musicians even can't figure out the time signature used here, let alone everything else. Just for fun, go through the song again and try to guess it. 😂😂
I see a lot of what I like about Bill Bruford's legacy. Bright snare, articulation, unbeatable beat displacement in odd time, combination of electronics and acoustics, the center hi-hat, Rototom, riding on pads, overall command. Danny is a beast and would be great in King Crimson.
Great stuff, great reaction!
Glad you enjoyed it
Great reaction brother. Danny C is a special talent. One of the GOATS! I think you would like black sabbath, especially 'war pigs', but bro, you gotta watch Gojira live. Drummer is sick!
Them polys at the halfway point? NUTS,!!!
Tool is an amazing band. Also, on a side note, you never go wrong with a Star Wars shirt.
Danny has created the most dope
Tribal beats in metal
"Wish I could play guitar sometimes..." Adam Jones is the guy shredding for Tool. You should check him out. So happy you crossed genres and found Tool. They've been blessing mainstream ears since the 90's.
That time signature tho 🤯🤯🤯😏💪
