    AO lost the government contract to Randolph. That style is military spec that the contract called for

      I wish AO offered more lenses because their Original Pilots come with skull temples which I really prefer. I wear my AO Original Pilots every day. I'm gonna grab a pair of Randolph Aviators in 23k with American Tan lenses though.

      Must have also lost the contract to be sold in military exchanges. I got 3 pairs over the span of 2 years for myself and gifts for parents. Each was only $50. I was shocked when I saw they rose the prices online to $100 and then up to $189 on their main site.

    I just bought my Saratoga Calobar sunglasses today. I think these are original 1950s sunglasses similar to the ones JFK used to wear. Very classy !

    4:47 - Very close. The color JFK wore was the standard at the time: Demi-Amber. Similar to the pattern you have but more red and very unique. They don't make anything like that anymore. Why they didn't just bring those back I don't know, but the Brown Demi is good looking too and suits you well. There are some vintage examples of Tortoise as well which I believe were after JFK's time.

    They actually have 6 styles now 😁 (since November). The Times, Tournament and AO 1004, but only available from independent retailers at this time and not on the Ao website 😎 otherwise solid review. The saratoga is huge bang for the buck.. made in the same facility as state $$$.

    The specific model in Mad Men was, in fact, the American Optical Pilot, which was first released as the FG-58, only available in the 52mm. The most accurate version you can get is the 52mm AO Pilot in Gold with Grey Glass lenses. I grabbed the 55 in gold just cause the 52 was too tight for me. I loved them so much that I’ve had 5 AO’s and just got my 6th, Pilot in silver with 55mm grey glass.

    • @BeastMadeReviews
      @BeastMadeReviews  Před rokem +1

      That’s actually incorrect. Randolph themselves told me they were the ones on the show. No doubt they are modeled after AO, though.

    • @DBSites
      @DBSites Před rokem

      @@BeastMadeReviews Ah, I gotcha. Oddly, that is anachronistic, just because I know the Randolph wasn’t developed till the 70’s and the I believe he starts wearing it when the series is taking place in ‘62. Odd detail that made me think about it

    • @BeastMadeReviews
      @BeastMadeReviews  Před rokem +1

      @@DBSites yeah, it's a strange choice by the production crew to choose Randolph when AO was easily available. You're right--AO came out first and were available in the 60s. So it would've been a more accurate choice for AO. Maybe there was a paid promotional thing? I don't know. Either way, can't go wrong with either option.

    i own a pair of american optical pilot in 57 mm glass in standard skull but they slide down the bridge of my nose. maybe i need to adjust the nose pads? or the glass is to heavy? let me know if you have any suggestions on that. i should have got them in 55 mm with bayonet or in their nylon or poly versions.

    • @BeastMadeReviews
      @BeastMadeReviews  Před 2 lety +2

      Yeah I would definitely try to adjust the nose pads first. You squeeze them together a bit for a tighter fit, but you can also try to bend them forward (away from the lenses) a little to get them up and away from your face. That might help some. It's at least worth trying before having to buy a different size. Hope it works out for you!

      @@BeastMadeReviews Seems like NASA astronauts were issued 52mm OP sunglasses, which makes it look like a universal size. Did they get gold or silver version?

    • @JoJo-st6jk
      @JoJo-st6jk Před 3 lety +1

      I like them, too, but 52mm sounds small for my face as well. However, with Ray-Ban, I fit the standard 54mm Wayfarer yet fit with 58mm Aviator, which leaves me wondering if the Saratoga might actually fit? As Dave mentioned, it's difficult to figure out when online is your only option 🤷‍♂️
