Mission Beach, California - very helpful tips, thank you. I’ve referred back a few times over the years to your video. I was good for 2 years about dusting and cleaning the screen door (5 houses from the ocean on one side and the bay on the other!). I forgot for the last 6 months though, and now I’ll have to get out the elbow grease! (And rustoleum and wax).
As long as you keep up on it, the wax works very well. But that's a really good track record, living so close to the ocean. I was busy/lazy last year and didn't do a clean and wax, and had to do a little sanding and painting🙄. But it still looks good. Thanks for watching, and rewatching!🙂
Hey there! Good job! I live in Kailua, Oahu, and 2 blocks from Kalama Beach. I missed the rustoleum reformer and just used the stop rust rustoleum. So I will monitor and see how it goes on the 2 screen doors, and the 18 cube refridgerator in the garage. The next time I will use the reformer 1st, then the stop rust. I just took the doors off by unscrewing the hinge side, removed the locks for better coverage, and hung them from a pole horizontally, using tie wraps around the pole and the hinge bar. Paint dries quickly so I made sure I gave it curing time between 3 coats. We'll see how it goes. Aloooohaa.
Mind officially blown! Wish i saw this video as soon as i had the security door instslled a few years back. Now gotta deal with repainting!

I had a metal screen door installed about4 months ago and it's already rusting from the elements. I'll try the wax in the next few days. It wouldn't be such a concern if it was the side garage screen, but it's the front door. I guess I have a job to do, :) Thanks for the video
Aloha Simone, it works. I made this video in 2015 and my door still looks new. I apply regularly, about every 3-5 months. Knock off any large rust flakes (if that bad) with a wire brush. Then spray the rust converter on the rusty spots and it should turn black. Then spray Rustoleum paint (whatever your local hardware store carries) and let it dry. Then spray the wax on both sides and be sure to get into all the ridges, holes, etc. Do a couple of applications to start with. Frequency of re-application depends on how much weather your door is exposed to. If you go to long and see any hint of rust, be sure to use the rust converter and paint right away and apply the wax. Great suggestions! When I heard you end with "Aloha", you really got my attention. We live in Kohala on the Big Island and get the salt air blowing with the trades up to our 1400 ft elevation. The screen doors really take a beating as do our windows with supposed stainless hardware. Will give this a try. Mahalo!

I just bought some white security doors a couple years ago and the rust is starting to break through at the welds . I think it is due to a poor quality steel . At any rate I wanted to get in front of the cancer before it got really out of hand and so I came to YT actually looking for some one who had tried Plastidip as a remedy. No one has thought of making that video yet so I guess I am ahead of my time. I like what you came up with and this seems a great solution. However I already have more small chores to keep up with around this old house as it is like changing the furnace filters for example. If I am honest with myself I know that I am not going to keep up with the tri-annual application of the wax. I am hoping for a fix it and forget it solution.
Let us know how it turns out, or create a video. Make sure to convert the rust, unless you completely remove the paint in rusted areas. It could work. It would take a lot of the liquid plastic. But a new door is expensive. Thanks for watching!

I had to do that. I caught it before it got too bad. There were just a few bad spots. I knocked the flakes off with a wire brush and then sanded. I used a rust converter and then painted, then waxed. Everything his been good for going on seven years. I clean and spray the door about every 3-5 months.
Wow, thanks SO much for these tips. We're on the North Shore of Kauai and like Kaneohe, we get lots of rain and some ocean spray especially during the windy winter months. We've already been through several of these doors, just had new ones installed and decided to go to Utube to look for help re how to protect the doors and our pocketbooks. Can't thank you enough. I realize this is an eight year old video but if anybody out there knows how to get the paint removed that got stuck in all of the little holes of the metal screen, I would love to hear from you. Short of taking a small nail and sticking it through 500 million holes. I don’t know how else to clean this out. I’ve considered wiping paint remover on the whole door. I do not know if it will get the paint out of those cracks and crevices, however.
I spray light coats to avoid filling the little holes. But sometimes it still happens, so I poke a nail through the holes to clear them.

How do I fix the metal mesh in it after it's been kicked in by an ex? Lol, the whole bottom area of my security door metal mesh is busted inward, and idk how to replace the metal mesh,or least push it back in, it's way to strong to do just with my hands, I've tried needle nose players and still it's dang impossible to push back in, half tempted to slip on my steal toed boots and start kicking ad hard as I can from the inside to push it back into place then tie some wiring all along the bottom
Aloha. Sorry to hear that. It sounds like a replacement door is in order. You might find someone who works with metal (handy person with lots of metal tools) and cut out part of the metal mesh and weld, or screw new material in. Or you could take the door to a metal shop, but I would suspect (with shop rates at around $100-$150 per hour) the cost would be more than buying another security door and having it installed. Our door is terrible with rust and I've tried every thing to clean it..

If it's not too far gone, try the rust converter after sanding and then spray the white Rustoleum and shoot the wax. If you need to buy a new door, wax asap.

@@Chicoandtheman Go to 3:02 in the video. You can also use a wire brush to knock off any large chunks, then sand a little. Then spray on the rust converter. After that, I painted and it was like new. Then waxed. Thanks for watching!

Aloha Ladi Day. After waxing the door, I wipe the door down every 2-3 weeks, (or when it needs it) with a rag and a mixture of soap and vinegar. Thanks for watching!

You should let the Rust reformer fully dry to make sure that all the solvents have evaporated and the rust has been converted. Also, you wouldn't want to spray paint or wax over unevaporated solvents, which can cause bubbling in the paint and an uneven wax coating. Thanks for watching Emily!

This is such a great video. What's your view on painting w/a brush? My security door has too many points where the spray paint will touch the walls even with painter's tape.
Aloha GH. Thank you for watching and the positive feeback? Painting with a brush should be fine. You can find 1/2 pint cans of Rust-Oleum (or larger) enamel for a few bucks, which is oil based. You'll need paint thinner for cleaning. You'll actually get a heavier coat then spraying!

Aloha Shaik. You can use any type of cleaner. You want to remove dirt, grease and anything else. I mix my own using water, dish soap and vinegar and put that into a spray bottle. A third of each will work, or whatever proportion works best for you. Thanks for watching!

Aloha Ali, you can't remove the mesh, it's welded onto the frame. When I had to paint, I laid down newspaper and plastic around the area. When I wax, I lay down newspapers. Thanks for watching!

Hi everyone! I was following along up until the last bulletpoint black screen where another product was introduced and totally got confused at the steps of each liquid and are they all needed? Could someone post a bullet point of steps with the item/product used pleeeease😆😊
The rust converter is used if your door has rust. Many people just apply the wax on a new door, but if they have rust, using the wire brush (as shown in the video) to remove flakes and rust, and the rust converter is used to neutralize the rust and stop it from spreading. Then paint and apply the wax after the paint has completely dried. I hope that helps and thanks for watching!

@@SmartySmartsThat’s to cover over the rust converter, which looks black when the rust is neutralized. My door is white and that can of paint is the closest. Made my door look new when the retouching was finished and the wax was applied.

I'm sorry but the other 2 doors that you should had become victims of cat pee , I've had this on my door it's not because of the elements.
Aloha Joe, if that's true, then my door would also be a victim of cat pee, as mine is in the same hall and no more than 7' feet away from one of the doors I showed. If this is the case, then the wax also works in protecting against this. Thanks for watching!
