The Princeton Neptune Number 1 which I use, is great for flower stems etc, but you probably won't be able to get super thin lines with it. I still haven't found the perfect one for that yet.

Out of curiosity, do you use Princeton Neptunes/Silver Black Velvets? I think they make painting easier than other brushes I've tried.
@@helencryer I’ve just very recently got a selection of Princeton Neptunes,it certainly makes a huge difference having good quality brushes,the difference is amazing,I love them ,along with watching your vids I am getting there slowly,more practice needed and time! X
Oh that's brilliant! I think they're wonderful. I was put off watercolours first time round because I tried them with synthetic brushes which held very little water.
Yes,I went cheap to begin with to see if I’d enjoy watercolours, which I now know was a mistake,I was going to throw the towel in,now I know I LOVE ❤️ it I’m slowly investing in some quality brushes,paints and paper etc and its been a real game changer.

Hi Helen, I am happy you swatch this set. Its a beautiful set, which I have in tube form. I notice the peach light is rose madder in the tubes. It looks like the dry half pans are much lighter. I am still going to get it to compare with my tube set which are excellent. Also the packaging seems to be from the earlier days of PR. They had taken out this set in tubes here in the US and I had not seen in 3 years a set available in the half pans until now. If you ever come across the tubes they are very good. I love Botanical sets since I love painting flowers. I love that you swatch them this way. Thanks. Maria
Ah that's interesting - someone else suggested that one might be a Rose Madder. I thought it was a bit too neon for flowers personally.
I think you could get more saturated swatches from the half pans if you pre-wet them and worked them a bit more, but that's not how I work with paint, plus I use a lot of water, so I wanted to test them according to how I like to use them. If you get them, please do comment back here on how they compare with the tubes, as that may be useful for other viewers!

For now I am linking a very good watercolor artist who reviews are great. It seems like this Floral Set was only available as a tube set in the US 5 years ago. Lovely swatching Helen! You hold your brush so close to the brush end!! When you took your workshop, did the instructor comment on that (I was a bit scolded for gripping mine like a pencil before and I wasn't as close to the end as you are). I would have to rearrange those colours right away. Funny how we get used to things in a certain order. That book is one of my favorites!
Some of those are so weak looking (the pr 254 was really! weak). Actually, only the yellows seem really nice. I agree on the student quality, and even at that, I would go for WN Cotmans instead of these.
I hadn't even thought about how I hold my brushes! No - the couple of art workshops I've been on weren't really teaching about art technique at all, more about ways of looking at things and abstracting from them. I've never been taught any watercolour at all.
Yes - they definitely need re-arranging! That Indian yellow and Azo Yellow were bugging me no end, but I thought I ought to keep them as I was sent for the review!
I think you could get more saturated washes, with pre wetting, but I don't usually do that plus I like to use lots of water, so I tested them according to how I usually use them.
I'm afraid I didn't much like the Cotmans when I used them. It would be interesting to swatch them side by side with these, but I don't have them any more. Personally, if at all possible, I would by-pass student grade materials altogether.
I just review them when I'm sent them, for those people who are looking for student level sets.
Hi Helen, I have finally swatch and compared the PR Botanical Pan Set a few days ago. While I was swatching the new pan set I brought out my swatch card from my tube set. This is what I notice, the pan set although its has the same names as the old set it was improved. The formulation seem to have change on the pan set. Now all except the tint from the last 4 watercolors that are neutral tone are still weak. Many greens change in the pan from the tubes. The yellows and reds had very settle improvements. I did check about the fluorescent watercolor and the one in my tube set is way better and only a shade lighter than the Chinese Red which is next to each other on my tube set. I never tested that particular color in my tube set for lightfastness but may now. In the pan set it does have some sort of dye in it. It's a inky.Also some colors on the pans are more on the opaque side than the tube set. Those were all my observations. I bought my set from Amazon US and since prime sales this botanical pan set is unavailable unfortunately. I do not know if they will bring it back since it took PR 6 years to make a pan set and release it. Its very unfortunate for those who did not grab a set pre-prime sale. Maria

Peach Light might be an imitation of rose madder. I think it might be formulated to paint roses and other delicate flowers.
I thought it was an Opera Rose imitation, given how bright it is, but I don't have any Rose Madder paints at all, so very possibly!
I personally don't think I'd be using it for flowers though - too neon.
@@helencryer Interesting! I thought the whole point of opera pink and its lookalikes was to be neon. Many botanical artists swoon over them. OK, that is not true, but you get my point.
Operas are definitely neon colours, but I didn't realise botanical artists liked them!! I've always thought of botanical pinks as a bit more natural looking, but it's not a subject I know much about! I suppose I see opera colours as just a bit of fun, and not used seriously because of being fugitive.
@@helencryer I remember a prominent botanical artist speaking highly of it. Unfortunately, I can’t remember her name. I think she used it in mixes or as one layer of several layers of different colours.

Your flowers are so beautiful. Flowers are def not my thing but I do enjoy doing them. Your knowledge of pigments and the various properties of the paints is quite remarkable. Do you have a science based background 😄? I must say, I really love this palette and it wud be quite an interesting one for me to play with. I’m sooo excited for Amazon Day. Thank you! It's just bits I've picked up over the last few years getting into art. My background is 'eclectic'! A degree which included 3 years of Speech and Language Therapy, plus some years of other science and Literature, then 20 years as a stay at home mum, then a firefighter, picture framer and now Coastguard 😬

Dear Helen, I'm a big fan of your channel! Today you left out the shadows on the flowers so that the individual colours can be seen better.
Could you please make a video where you paint freehand flowers with watercolours just like in this video, but then also paint the shadows? Because that is actually EXACTLY MY PROBLEM when painting!! I love painting flowers with watercolours, it's no problem when tracing them. But the shadows always look completely unnatural to me when used freehand and ruin the picture. But not necessarily because they are technically wrong, but because somehow they just don't seem to fit homogeneously into the picture... so that would really help me a lot 😅
I think what I meant by shadow was just to put a darker shade of the flower colour around the flower centres and some petal edges, to give a bit more definition to the petals.
