I love my Qor high chroma starter set, it was my first nice watercolor set I purchased a few years ago. I’ve eyed this one for travel. I prefer to have some other color choices than the same old usuals. This was a fun swatching idea! I’d love to see more of this type.

The QoR Mini is one of my all-time favourite sets - it's such a well-rounded colour selection, and I really love the tin design. It's super compact but still has a ton of distinct mixing spaces. They're small, but since I never paint anything larger than an A5 they're enough for me. And if you want to do less mixing and carry more colours, you can remove the silicone insert and fit a TON of pans in that tiny tin!
I'm not particularly bothered by the lightfastness issues of the Schmincke set, since I'm not painting anything that'll hang unprotected in direct sunlight for any length of time. I love that tin design and the colour selection is fun and a bit different from your standard sets, which makes me play around a bit more with my colour mixing.

I only have the schmincke set and one of the things that i really liked was the secondary colours are the complementary of CYM primaries used. Now im intrigued by the QoR mini...

Hi, Lee, I have the Schmincke tin and have added six half pans to it, what a difficult choice that was for such a highly curated set! Complicated by having a tiny companion set of 8 that they released last last year to which I also added another four half pans. As there was a sort of triad thing going on in this tin, I decided to be indulgent and added a quirky vivid 60’s feeling primary triad of Indian yellow, cobalt turquoise, and opera rose, as well as a much more muted triad of transparent green gold, cobalt blue deep, madder brown. That gives me plenty of variants of primary triads! And is really a fun set of choices. There were only two crossover colours between the two tins, lemon yellow and the olive green deep. I am not that attached to either!
I love your layout for modding this tin for more full pans, it is such a nice design - and it would giveme the leeway to expand my Schmincke collection in the future, I am already thinking how about earth colours! I don’t mind the odd less colourfast pigment, I know which they are and I can use them for specific purposes, but I guess a light fast primary yellow will have to come next. Do you have a recommendation? Love your videos, there’s enough real information to keep me coming back for more.

Hello, Lee -- I've got the Schmincke set on order (like you, more for the tin than the colors, though there are 2 colors I don't have in all my Schmincke tubes). I just recently bought 3 Qor sets - and I love them! I was going to stick to D Smith, Schmincke, & Sennelier, but now Qor will also join my kit. I will get the Qor Mini soon. This is a very helpful post for those of us who love botanical painting. Thank you!

I have the Schmincke set and just bought the Qor set. I actually have equivalents of all the Qor colors, but have long wanted to experience their paints with the unique binder. The color selections in the Qor are amazing....finally, a manufacturer that figured out how to do a travel set that is BOTH a split primary and a secondary palette, AND takes a pass on BLACK (I really wish Schmincke would stop putting black in so many sets lol). I have a couple of thise Schmincke palette boxes and you can take the insert out and fit 32 standard half pans. You rearranged the paints from the original in the Schmincke set....their placements actually set up the collection in neutralizing pairs. I think the Qor colors are good for a beginner. The Schmincke set is not a beginner palette to me...I got it as a sort of challenge palette to play with for some of my plein air sketching.

Great video! The Schmincke set really broke me out of the color mixing rut I was in by forcing me to experiment more. I was quite surprised by just how many hues I could mix from these pans.

My first set was the 24 pan by sennlier , best selection of colours that I've ever seen in one box! They are perfect for botanical paintings as they glaze so nicely 😍

I do find the colours chosen in the QoR mini set to be intriguing. Probably because I do like me a split primary set.

Great presentation and as always very honest and informative review. So what pigment choices would you recommend for a lightfast good quality C M Y ?

What colours? Thick opaque yellows and similar. Your faves. :-) :-)
