Is It Too Late To Fix The Hulk in the MCU?

  • Adapting a beloved comic book character onto the big screen isn’t easy. You need to juggle many different elements from decades worth of comics into just ninety to one hundred and twenty minutes. Even the characters that seem like they are one-note caricatures are surprisingly complex.
To anyone who only knows about the Hulk through the MCU, there are many stark differences and subtle details that just weren’t brought over. The most important thing that I don’t think the MCU ever portrayed correctly is who exactly Bruce Banner is and who The Hulk is. Because they are in fact two very distinct people fighting for control.
So how have most attempts gone to adapt the superhero equivalent of Dr. Jeckel and Mr. Hyde? Ehhh… Mostly misses.

Weird that Marvel did a better "hero struggling with dual identity" with Moon Knight than the Hulk. Sure the TV series had some problems but I think they treated Marc Spector dynamic with Steven Grant and their arc about learning to accept each other, much better than Hulk and Banner in all the films.

Considering how the MCU already introduced Skar, Hulk son, his presence could be what triggers Hulk reawkening, with Banner starting to show difficult to control the Hulk at same time he has difficult to get along with Skaar, who obviously wouldn't want to talk to Banner. He wants the Hulk, his real father. This could put Banner against a huge dillema: If he should release the Hulk or not, knowing that, by keeping him repressed, he's taking him away from the son.

I might be in the minority here but I think 2003 Hulk, while not perfect, is the best of all the Hulk films, since it gives focus to Banner trauma caused by his father and he having to deal with those painful memories and accept the Hulk as part of himself. Making Brian Banner (or David as he's called in the film) the Absorbing Man not only gives alot of his character (a narcisistic scientist who sees himself as god and others as just guinea pigs) but also works for climax, with Banner in the end having to defeat him not by punching him or resisting, but by letting his abusive father take the energy he cannot control, his power, his rage (the thing Banner was afraid to unleash through all the film).

For all of the criticisms of the 2003 film, I have to say that it's still one of the only comic book movies that fully embraced it's roots and it genuinely feels like you're watching a comic book. It was (mostly) accurate and it was campy fun.
When I watched it when I was 13 years old? Oh yeah. It was definitely my jam. Now that I'm older, wiser, and can accept a piece of work - worts and all - for an enjoyable experience? Hell yeah. It lives on in my heart with Sharknado and the rest of the so-bad-they're-good films.

@@EricTheMage Ironic, I felt the fact the film try to be way too similar to comic book with all those transitions was one the problems. I respect Ang Lee choice to be more artistic with the film, however I felt those transititon didn't fit the dark psychological tone of the film. Luckly Lee didn't overuse them in the more quiet moments, where character just talk about their traumas, allowing those scenes to be impacfull without being interrupt by distractions like the comic transitions.

Hulk Deserves better, he's deserved better than the past decades and it's long overdue that something be done, give him a Series taking place between the events of all the phases up to now and earn that character development he's missing soo much, You could literally have an entire series dedicated to all the missing gaps in his timeline and properly flesh out his character and sure it may require some retconning but honestly I think that's for the better considering what we ended up getting for him, that or give him at least six or more movies to flesh out his deep rooted untapped potential and lore (If Spider-Man can have 10 movies over the last few decades connect to each other despite solo rights or even who's playing him at the time or god forbid continuity, If Sony can somehow have No Way Home and Spider-Verse tie it all together then surely Disney/Marvel could do something with Hulk that's worth a damn) I'm soo tired of seeing Hulk not getting anything, no depth, no development, no resolutions, no focus, no Movies, shows, cartoons, anime, not even a modern Video Game. We haven't had a Hulk Game since 2008 and that wasn't even a very good game, the last good one was Ultimate Destruction back in 2005, 18+ year's ago. The only place where Hulk is thriving right now is in the comics and that's it. Marvel needs to get their heads straight and do something with this fundamental foundational character that got them to where they are today because without Hulk you have no Avengers, no Wolverine, no Defenders, no decades of great stories and lore spanning an infinite landscape of imagination and possibilities. Without the Hulk you have no Marvel. He's important not just for the MCU but for Marvel and Pop culture as a whole.

Honestly, my only complaint about Ang Lee's Hulk was that the monster fight scenes were way too damn dark. I couldn't tell what the quality of the CGI was when I first saw it in theaters because it was I could barely see anything. It was even worse in the fight with Absorbing Man. Since then, I've seen edits where it was much brighter and easier to see. CGI was fine, but at the time, those dark fights were an insane disappointment. Hulks fight with the military was awesome though.

Eric you are 💯 spot on what the MCU has done the Hulk. The 2008 "INCREDIBLE HULK" Movie with Edward Norton was the best hulk bar none "PERIOD!!" the first "HULK MOVIE" was too much Psycho babble about the relationship with his father & it was completely "HUMOURLESS" & The Hulk grows as big as a"HOUSE??!!" He should've been buck naked when he was that size. Wotta aload of bullsh*t. Furthermore the reason why Rick Jones (The kid) who Bruce Banner saved from the Gamma bomb explosion in the comics, coz Jones went to the Gamma bomb site as a "DARE" to his fellow juvenile friends & if you never knew that, well now you know & not coz of its the 60's writing, but thanks for the interesting vlog. Good question! I mean, it'd take a bit to set up because it'd need to bring over Venom, but King in Black by Donny Cates is hands down my favorite Marvel story of the last few years.
The king of the symbiotes, Knull, comes to Earth and the only heroes that can stop it are Venom (because his symbiote broke away) with Thor and Storm (because lightening is their only weakness.)
Definitely a good read but to do it right would be a massive crossover that would have to wait until after Secret Wars.

One way, I as an amateur, have thought of to redeem the character concept of Hulk and Bruce Banner before he's relegated to (at best) an irrelevant B-list, ultra-violent anti-hero of low fantasy psychological horror. Or as a cartoonishly silly Hotel Transylvania Universal Monster character (like MCU Hulk) is the nuclear option.*
I'm biased for classic Hulk so the whole dark, brutal Immortal Hulk trend comes off the same for me as evil brutal Superman mixed with psychopathic Batman. A sensational spectacle that's devolving the character's mostly lost lasting impact as a hero who inspires.
Hulk was once an outsider Superman. If Superman was physically frightening and misjudged on the outside for his physical power and appearance.
Meanwhile, who he is as a person is completely overlooked and ignored because of the prejudice he receives for being a monster in the eyes of strangers quick to condemn him as a mindless savage beast or for Bruce, he has his own set of problems for how he was and is perceived.
A Superman without a family, home, belonging, but despite being a misfit everywhere whether as a human and among fellow superheroes he still has and makes loyal friends wherever he goes from people who learn and love who he is on the inside rather than for his actions that are often not what they seem initially (ramages of an out of control wild animal man.
Which whether anyone will admit this, filmmakers who used the character in movies/television but found him largely uninteresting and are not actual fans of him are guilty of judging him hastily.
Hulk is outdated to people who look down on the Hulk, seeing and staying comfortable rejecting the character with this one-dimensional view of Hulk/Bruce. Who view Hulk as dumb, dangerous, destructive, without any complexity or nuance other than what happens after his anger instead of the causes of his anger.
I'm convinced that's why the MCU ignored his parents and really every significant loss in Bruce's life. Including Jennifer Walters who they changed her origin from almost being assassinated while Bruce believed that Jen's enemies were targeting him. Leading to him being more desperate to save him with a blood transfusion out of guilt for endangering her as in his history, this situation has repeated ever since his mother.
How Hulk is perceived in and out of universe by the general majority is nearly identical to how he was perceived for most of his comic book history. Even the inaccurate reinterpretation of Hulk from the 70s show that still boosted his reputation has an in-continuity equivalent with an alien documentary film director that appeared in Guardians of the Galaxy. Bereet?
I'm not going to go into detail, but there's quite a timely lesson and theme that's hugely scarce in newer stories of this century that the characters Bruce Banner, Hulk and Rick Jones could all represent. While a complicated subject now in reality. It's perfect for fiction to recontextualize.
It's close to that unusual My Adventures With Superman animated show that retreads multiple Hulk stories but from Betty Ross' POV. Even down to the use of the Suicide Squad and the inclusion of Amanda Waller having similarities to Hulk's interactions with S.H.I.E.L.D.
Come to think of it, the Justice League movie origin was also dangerously close to how the Avengers form around fighting and then teaming up with the Hulk.
*Oh, and the nuclear option is finally REINTRODUCING RICK JONES. Years ago, I imagined an Iron Giant/Spiderverse/Atlantis: The Lost Empire animated film that during that time I would've hoped Disney or Pixar would collaborate with Marvel Studios (As WB Animation and DC does) on. Finally properly adapting and perhaps refresh his 1960s gamma bomb origin story but not for bringing back the Gamma bomb concept (rather for Rick). Because of Rick, Bruce's origin story was heroic as his self-sacrifice to save some teenager going nowhere fast is the reason why he was transformed into the Hulk. Rather than the modern definitive Incredible Hulk tv show/Ultimate universe/MCU origin which portrays him as a mad scientist on the level of arrogance as Dr. Doom. I would have the audacity to say make this the origin story film would be the Yost Universe's Hulk. For his rouge's gallery, supporting cast, and characterization.
The MCU Hulk as the definitive Hulk has lessened all of the character's heroic aspects and qualities so my nuclear option is for a Spiderverse type film about the Hulk/Bruce Banner but also Rick Jones.
