I hope you enjoy seeing my process for fabric selection for an upcoming project. This is not a definitive way to do things...just a way that I have found helpful for me when it comes time to pick fabrics for a new project.
What a great video! As if God knew exactly what I needed this morning. After 20 years of accumulating fabrics after my first quilt, I’ve been struggling/intimidated when it comes to choosing fabrics for a project. Thank you so much Patty for explaining so eloquently how to pick fabrics for a quilt. This is exactly where I am stuck in quilting. Blessings! ❤
Oh my goodness!!! I'm so happy this answered some questions you have! You should look up my Mismatched Patchwork quilt project and using a color wheel, make a few of those. You would learn so much about color, but it would be fun for you and not intimidating at all! Even though I call it a beginner quilt, it's fun for everyone. And if you approach from a color perspective, I think you'd learn a lot and enjoy yourself. pattymacmakes.com/easiest-quilt-for-beginners/ I also have a couple of videos on that project....which is on my bed and I love it.
I love putting fabrics together but for a long time I failed to consider the VALUE which makes a big difference. I really like those 3 fabrics you chose.
Oh yes!!! There are so many tiers to selecting fabrics.
Thank you Patty! This was very helpful. I understand better how begin putting fabrics together. ❤🎉
I'm so glad you enjoyed it!! It can become challenging quickly, but you learn best by making a few things to see what you like and don't like as well.
Hi Patty great video! Glad to know I wasn't the only person who didn't know about the color dots 😁
I’m really happy it was a fun new tidbit for you to use! I find most people don’t know what they are for. Picking colors is just one way to go!
Such great tips for picking a color palette! Thanks for posting!
Thank you Brenda! I find this aspect of things to be a bit of a challenge, so the selvage really helps me with my selections.
I just love finding your channel. Thanks
Thank you Brenda!! Welcome!!
Thanks Patty! I enjoy searching for fabrics that complement each other but joann's organization (?) makes it a challenge. This tip will make it a little easier.
You're welcome Kim! Yes.....it is pretty difficult to mix and match fabric in Joann because for the most part it's all just random prints. Which is fine for people sewing garments because they only need one fabric for a top or a dress or pants or whatever. But for quilting, we need sometimes as many as 7 or 8 fabrics depending on the complexity of the block. Using the color dots is the only way I can negotiate mixing and matching their stuff. I do hope it helps you the next time you face that massive wall of cottons.
@@PattymacMakes I find that the quality of the fabrics can be really different too. How much do you watch for those differences? Do you stick with one brand rather than mixing them?
@@kimhandy1861 Yes, that is an excellent point! Well, you're kind of stuck in Joann in terms of mixing manufacturers. If I'm buying higher end products, I think Moda and Riley Blake are incredibly nice. And if I can buy within one collection, that definitely makes things a bit easier. I mix my stuff like crazy to be honest. Starch and careful pressing has work for me so far.
Makes sense, Patty. Thanks for doing this as a separate mini-video. Love the colors you selected . I think the darker color sort of anchors a project, too. Can't wait to see your upcoming creation. 😊 TFS. Cheryl from AZ.
Thanks Cheryl! Great point about the green anchoring the set! I'm happy you enjoyed the tidbit. I'm trying something new with sharing a tidbit every week. Something short that shares a single topic or a small tip.
@@PattymacMakes Good idea, Patty. And you explain it so well. Thanks! Cheryl
Thank you for this video! So helpful, I never knew about the color dots on fabric!
It's not talked about very much, but I find it incredibly helpful! I hope you can try a new project using it as a technique soon.
Omg, what a great explanation. Getting fabric to match is so difficult for me. Now I know, thanks to you!😘😘😘
You're welcome Angel!! It's very tricky, isnt' it? I am going to share more videos coming up designed to help with fabric matching, and I hope that will be as helpful for you as this. Spend some time playing with your stash and see what unexpected combinations you can put together!
I knew what the dots meant; what I didn't know was how to use them - that was a definite ah ha moment. Thank you.
You're welcome Frances. I don't know if that's the intended purpose, but I have found it super helpful for me when I'm starting a project so I wanted to share it others.
Great choices for the fabric for the runner.
Thank you!! I’m excited to get rolling on it!
Brilliant video. Thank you.
Thank you so much Caroline! I hope it helps you!
Thank you - ALWAYS 🤗🦩
You're welcome Sandra!!! Thank you for watching and leaving a comment!
Big congrats on reaching 30K subscribers! Woo-hoo!
Thank you so much guys!! You are my favorite Taste Makers!
I'm going to be making runners for my kitchen, used as wall decorations.
I love that idea!! I have table runners and all sorts of things in mind as well! The planning is so much fun.
Thank you so much.. never realized avout the color registry
You're welcome!! Some lines print a fancy looking selvage without the colors, but most will have them for you to see and use.
THANK YOU!!!😊
You're welcome!
This was helpful to me in thinking about color/fabric choices for quilts.
When I am matching fabrics from varied collections, this is where I start. It really helps me to find the best combinations.
Very helpful thank you
I'm so happy it was helpful Shane! Picking color and prints are not easy, so this is one way I've found to help me with those choices.
Great information!
Thanks Maria! I’ve shared this info with crafty friends in real life and they always were surprised by this approach. I hope you’ll try it!
I was so happy to see this new video! I totally needed your help on this topic!!! :D
I'm so happy you enjoyed it LuAnn! It can be daunting to pick fabrics for a complicated pattern. It's a lot to consider and can become quickly overwhelming! So I thought starting with a chat on one way to consider the color aspect might be helpful. Thanks for watching!
Hi patty. Ok so I watched ! thank you for sharing. I often have fabrics with no color chart along the edge wich as you said makes it harder. And yes!! Prints are a stinker to match up some times.
I just love so many of the prints you select. They feel so whimsical and remind me of growing up in the 70s. I was telling a friend about a print you shared on a recent video of owels, moons, birds.. it was mainly black, white with orange moons. I LOVED it.
I am looking forward to your next color video!! 👍💕👍
I'm really happy you enjoyed this Annette! Sometimes the color chart is in shapes and not dots. Or they print the selvage in the colors used in the print. Or sometimes it's not there at all as you say! It's a challenge to do something that looks put together and not a mess that's for sure. It's a subtle art. I also grew up in the 70s so I'm sure that flavors my love of color and bold prints. I still like old tv shows and music, too! The beautiful print you mention is the Crescent Collection from Ruby Star Society. Sadly it seems to be sold out everywhere. You might be able to find some on etsy. I had purchased the yardage in an order last May that didn't ship until everything came in and that wasn't until September. So in the meantime, the Crescent fabrics sold out and I wasn't able to get anything else from that collection. I'm working on notes this afternoon for the next series on using color. It's kind of a complicated subject, so I'm going to approach it in small bites.
Thank you, I am still new to making quilts and other items, I did not know what the "dots" mean. Thanks to you, I now know. Great and very helpful.
You're welcome Sharon! I find it super helpful to mix and match colors using the print register rather than the print itself, which can become over whelming. Plus, it's interesting to see what really goes into a certain fabric color wise. I hope you spend some time playing with this technique!
@@PattymacMakes I will be using the print register for matching. It will be quite helpful. Again, many thanks.
@@sharonw667 You're welcome Sharon!! I will be interested to hear from you once you've had a chance to use it.
Thank you so much! It never occurred to me to look at those color dots 🤦♀️. I never know how to start!
You're welcome Rosary! To be honest, in the hours and hours of videos and teaching materials I've have the pleasure to review, I've never seen it mentioned except one time. And then only in passing. I think it's a very helpful tool in getting a series of fabrics together. Color is a challenging subject, so allow yourself some time to explore your stash and see what fun and unexpected combinations YOU can put together! Putting fabrics together for a block or quilt design feels hard, because it IS hard! There are principles to color mixing and matching that isn't discussed very much, so I'm hoping to provide some assistance on it. Once you start putting it together, it's much easier.
Thanks Pattymac Makes. I never noticed that assortment of colors on the selvage.
You're welcome Donell! Once your see it, you will never miss it again! LOL Different selvages show it in different ways which is another interesting point. Enjoy exploring your stash!
thankss......
You're welcome!
I was wondering about those dots!
I used to work in offset printing so I knew about the color registers in print. No one really talks about them in terms of fabric, but they are super helpful in selecting coordinating fabric.
Is the color register organized from most used to least?
I don't really know, but I don't think so. I think it ranges from one color family to the next, but I will look into it more closely! Great question!
What did you make with these 3 fabrics?
Hi Rosa! I made a table runner. You can see it here: czcams.com/video/uNfqvZi0exc/video.html
