Hi everyone. Here is the last of the series of how to chooses colours for your quilt...well the last of the main videos. I think I could talk about colour every day of the year. Please let me know if you have any more questions.

I just received a big sack of scraps of various fabrics, sizes and colors. I want to make a blanket. What is the best way to create a harmonious combination of those colors?
I don’t want to buy more fabric. Just make use the available things.

Budi Suhendro arrange them into colours and go from black to white shades and Tones in every colour, to get a better overview of what you have and then chose the ones you want to use from that.

Not sure why CZcams suggested a four year old video series on color for me, but I’m glad it did. I have always felt pretty confident in choosing colors, but now I better understand why. I love your videos! We quilters are so fortunate to have you as a resource. As others note, you are a great teacher!

Thank you so very much. I am a beginner and started taking quilt classes 3 months ago. In my quilt classes I have learned techniques from piecing to finishing. The classes always starts with presenting a pattern that we will learn, and then setting us free in the quilt shop to buy the fabrics for it, starting with choosing a focus fabric. But no instruction on color theory. I have been disappointed at the results of my color choices. Your video has revealed to me that the focus fabric I chose was the result of my personal preference, (I like brights and strong contrast) and has revealed to me why the colors I chose for the other fabrics (more tinted versions of the same colors in the focus fabric) resulted in a quilt that just fell flat with my eyes. I will cling to what you taught me in this video series when I choose fabrics for my next quilt.

I see this was uploaded in 2019 and I'm watching it in 2022. I see you are still going as to the right of my screen is a video posted 12 hours ago. I have watched many of your videos and I think they're all well done. Frankly, I think this one is fine. If you hadn't made the comments at the end I wouldn't have known why you probably didn't go back and re-do the blurry bit at the start but I pushed through that knowing how good your videos are and not really caring if it wasn't perfect. You are excellent at making clear, easily understood points out of complex matters and so we shall all keep listening to you. Hope life is better now. We all are going through these things as we get older. Myself included. They make us stronger, unfortunately stronger, but stronger nevertheless. Keep those videos coming... for as long as you enjoy doing them and don't worry about us. We love 'em! Take care.

Oh Karen, you have opened up a entirely new world of colour choices for me. Your videos are outstanding and very educational. The explanation of how everything works together to give someone their choices of colours for beautiful, delightful quilts rather than just ok quilts is surmountable and overwhelmingly creative and inspiring. The world is now my oyster and for the first time I may be understanding why when it comes to colour options for my quilts to sing 🎶 with melodious voices. I will patiently await your future videos on this diverse subject.

THANK YOU! I've been looking at quilts and colors for literally months, trying to figure out what I liked and what was worth putting my limited energy into. I've collected literally hundreds of photos of quilts towards that effort. After listening to you talk about color in this way, it was like a light went on. I very quickly zoomed through my files, indiscriminately copying everything I loved into a single file. And I learned that I love very clear colors, from very saturated to moderately saturated, with lots of contrast. I've probably scrambled some of what you said, because I need to listen again, but I just wanted to say thank you for taking the time and fighting through all the challenges of life to share this with us. I could see a bit of what it cost you, and I just want you to know that you're appreciated. Once again, thank you! ❤

Dear Karen Brown - I enjoyed the 4 videos about color theory and the use of color in quilting very much. I learned a great deal. I will need to rewatch all of the videos and write down the new words I have learned (hue, tone, saturation, etc.). Of all of the you tube videos I watch on quilting yours are my favorites. The series on color helped me, a new quilter, understand why I "love" some photos of quilts and not others that I see in books. You have encouraged me to be more creative in the use of color, because I tend to be conservative. I am now working on a lap quilt with many soft colors, that "somehow" (LOL) all compliment each other. But, now I understand that the "somehow" is not serendipity. Using colors is a bit art, and science and a lot of fun. I will look at the resources on your website. Thank you again. You have many more videos I look forward to watching. Ahh, value certainly became important when I recently cut up a scrap quilt in beautiful batiks. The plan was to add narrow sashings in off-white, but after laying out some pieces on the white yardage (the contrast was too harsh) I hated the effect so much I went out and bought a black marble print instead. The effect is softer without losing the design and I am much happier with my finished quilt top!

You have reignited my passion to give quilting a go. But also helped with colour placements for my yarn projects too.

Thank you for making this video. I had no problem choosing colors (I like all of them) until I bought a very special pattern and wanted to change the colors without changing what I liked about the relationships between the colors. I was stuck! But now I think I see how to move ahead.

Just found these and I'm impressed and a bit overwhelmed. I'll be referring to these often as I try out different fabric combinations. Thank you for such detailed and helpful information. I appreciate the pdf's to help organize my thoughts.

Hi Karen Just found you by chance on CZcams. You have such a joyful voice. So far I am pleased with your videos and how you impart the information to us. No distractions. You come across as very prepared on your video subject. I will be looking for your future videos. Thinking positive thoughts keep my spirits up in tough times. Quilting has helped me immensely since retiring. I'm thankful that the color subject is not my issue. I have trouble following a lot of the pattern instructions which leads me to a lot of UFOs.

I loved this series! Not sure I absorbed it all but I’ll work on it. This corona virus lock down has me itching to make my first quilt, but being new to this area, I’m not sure where the fabric store is and if I can actually get in it. I’ve listened to many of your videos and you are very clear and clearly informed. Thank you for generously sharing your knowledge.

Thank you so much for your helpful videos. Color has never been an easy concept for me, at least past the point of whether something was visually pleasing. To be able to understand how color works is a new venture for me and I am sure I'll need to view this series multiple times. Your information explains why some fabrics I've put together didn't work as well as I'd hoped and now I can understand why. Thank you for sharing your knowledge!

Thanks for GREAT TIPS, it helped me alot today. I've been stuck on a one block of a quilt I designed Feb 2010 & just now making. I had it all sketched, colored on paper. Found fabric that's perfect, but whn I paper pieced one corner section of Block B, one fabric is off & I'm already not happy. I came on YT searching for help & so glad I found it on your channel. Now I know what I need to do. A bigger challenge is finding the right shade of green bcuz I need Moda & no LG quilt shops nearby. I only want to use Moda bcuz all the other fabric I'm using is. I know it doesn't really matter, but it's my design, so it matters with this one. I found a shop 2 1/2 hrs away... guess it's time for road trip next mo. In the meantime, I'll work on another section. At least coming here, I feel less stressed than I did last week, so THANK YOU!!! Keep peddlin ladies...get it?! lol Stay well all! Blessings, L :)

Hi loved the way we have described the colour wheel. I have been quilting for some time know so l don’t know if I was doing in the way. I have always picked a mane fabric that has a besy Patton , I look at the colours and choose the fabric colours...I don’t Mach 100% but I find it always work out..... I have been told that I have a good eye for colours .... and looking at the way you have described it all it’s given me the conferences that I’m getting it right, and now feel that I can tackle solid as that I been wanting to a soiled colour quilt for some time and never understood the colour wheel. Thank you
