As an Estonian, I am shocked at how big we got. But if you think about everything that the Bolsheviks had to deal with, all the countries they had to fight all at once, the fact Russia just came out of WW1 and many other reasons, then it doesn't surprise too much that they didn't fight that good, but still. Estonia still punched way above its weight.

But unlike Russia, we have never had tens of millions of people (besides, some people did not believe that Estonia could stand up to Russia).
If you notice during the Estonian counter- attack that pushed the Soviets out of their country, the Finnish made naval landings in the Baltic Sea and attacks on land up to further weaken the Soviet forces

They didn’t actually fight Germany, that was a Baltic German uprising you saw in the video. Germany was bound by the treaty of Versailles at this time.
@@Thisisstupid427 No. Germany sent troops to help up latvia as they managed to take control of the country. Means that Estonia had to fight pro german latvians and germans itself. Watch the video of an Estonian ( Eastory ) which is so good

@@Mr.Hack. Estonians never fought side by side with Germans, we fought them in the Landeswher war in 1919 and won. Also the majority of the time there were only Russians 1.6k Russians, only in late 1919 when the Russians retreated from the Viru Offensive the number grew to 20k, still 4 times smaller than the Estonian army.

Now imagine if Yudenich assault on Petrograd succeded and what implications that would've had for the Russian Civil War.
Petrograd is shortly captured by ill-equipped white combat detachments before the realities of having to feed its population and repel Bolshevik assaults sets in and they flee over the Finnish border or fight until surrender. The war at this point was not likely to swing against the Red Army.. I mean just look at the numbers the Red Army musters for the defense of Petrograd when Yudenich’s forces arrive on the outskirts. If they capture the city in a lightning campaign they’ll soon be forced out by overwhelming numbers.

I think the reason Estonia won the war was because at that time Russia was going through a civil war, so the focus of their army was separated and the Estonian war didn't seem to be their priority, the result of independence that Estonia got was a testament to Russia's defeat
Actually if you watch carefully russian imperialist forces were fighting for estonia. The push for St Petersburg was decided by the whites, who had a lot of power in estonia. This conflict could also be considered an estonian civil war, as on both sides fought estonians-russians from estonia, either supporting the commies or a free estonia/the whites
No, the Russian imperialists did not have that much power in Estonia. During the First World War and at the end of 1918, many Russian whites came to Estonia. Initially they fought against Estonia, but since they were losing the war, they agreed to cooperate with the Estonians and the two of them went to attack St. Petersburg.

As a Norwegian, I am very happy for the Estonians, also my friend is Estonian!
Ironically I’ve never met an Estonian in real life but have two Twitter mutuals from there (I do have a friend from Norway in real life though, he studied at my university. Sadly he just graduated and I graduate in the fall and I really can’t afford to fly out of the US now).
Maybe one day I will meet an Estonian in real life or go there myself. I’ve heard a lot of them very reserved, though.

How do you make your mapping and how do you make the numbers counting
Fun fact even after the Germans were forced to withdraw from these areas, and reduce the size of their army (even though they were keeping regions like Georgia, Ukraine, Don-Bass, Cossacks, Poland, Baltics, and Finland free form the Reds). The Germans still had a 100 thousand troops volunteer before they were discharged, to help the Baltics. Mainly split up into three different groups.

The Germans were Indeed the reason that Russia was collapsing however the German units that remained in the Baltic region after Germany surrendered fought against the Estonians and Latvians. When they finally were forced to return to Germany, they commited some attrocites in their wake.
@@danielw.8356 They also usurped the Latvian government and replaced it with a German led one. Then they fought against Latvia and Estonia (while they were fighting the reds) and were kicked out of Latvia by the Estonians and Latvian nationalists.
When they finally agreed to return to Germany, they left a trail of destruction in their wake.
So yes, they did fight the reds, but they also fought the baltics so you can't say that they helped. They were just another conquerer like the reds.

The reason why Estonia won’t his war was due to some factors:
1. The bolsheviks were just fresh out of a civil war and there were still lots of remnants of the Tsarists
2. The Finnish were helping them
3. The Estonians had superior strategy
4. The bolsheviks were at war with basically everybody at this point
1, 4, and arguably 3 also apply to Poland during the polish-soviet war

Im amazed how many Russian units decided to fight for Estonia.
They didn't quite fight for estonia, just on the same side with us, in their civil war.
I know there was some conflict between us because they didn't want independent baltics, it was more enemy of my enemy is my friend type of thing.
Just like the Estonian Communists fought against white Estonians. Therefore, I think it is more correct to call this event the national liberation war of the Estonian people as part of the civil war in Russia
